Poly/Multi Experiment (Adreanline Rough/ Hexyfiber)

Hey everyone,

Somehow managed to finish all my reels  and have been toying around with some new string combinations. Mostly, I've been hybriding poly with OG Micro in the crosses (cost effective). It hits just fine but I was looking for something a tad softer and was thinking of trying multi. My main concern is how it'll effect spin production/ string interaction on the racquet.

I'm thinking of stringing up Adrenaline Rough/ Hexy fiber @ 54/57

Any thoughts?

EDIT: 2.22.12

Note; I'll admit it. I'm a poly player and will preamble this by saying I am very biased against multi and Holy Cow I did NOT like this setup. I think it has to do with the general Poly/Multi combination as I've played Adrenaline/OGSM and enjoyed it and I even can hit with a full bed of multi although it's not my preferred string. Frankly though, I'm having trouble bringing myself to play with this frame when I have so many other available choices in my bag so I can't provide a true and honest review. Here's what I found in the little bit I've hit so far.

Aside from the slight issues with the Hexyfiber (incorrect listed gauge), there were no issues stringing it. Adrenaline is just like any other poly in the mains and Hexy fiber strings like a wet noodle-- quite literally NO coil memory.

Groundstrokes--
*BIAS ALERT* The spin potential feels like near zero. When I switch from my usual poly/OGSM frames to this, the ball simply does NOT go over for the first 5ish balls. Instead of clearing the net by 1-3 feet it hits the tape...Perhaps it's simply my style of play but I feel like the ball slides off the strings when I try to hit topspin. Hitting flat is a touch more tolerable but I have to make significant adjustments-- the trajectory is very very different from my usual.

Slices are mediocre-- I don't see anything special here.

Volleys:
I'll regretfully admit it, this setup volleys rather nicely. It has a soft and muted feel with not too much power; just how I like it.

Serves:
Haven't tolerated it long enough to really try-- will get back to this 1

Feel:
It is muted, soft, and produces a terrible "thwock" when hitting the ball. Hitting topspin gives one the sensation of the ball slipping on the strings but otherwise (hitting flat) is not a terrible feeling. I wouldn't chose this particular setup for any sort of significant match but it works rather nicely for teaching.

Durability/Tension:
Honestly, I don't think I'll be giving this stick enough playtime to merit a true durability test. I don't have the heart to cut out a new string job so it's been relegated to a teaching/ reserve practice frame. Should my ~4 racquets mysteriously pop during a match and my trusty Head Vilas woodie not be available, I'd consider playing with it. Until then, perfect for returning flat balls with no pace for students

All in all, I don't know how some of the players on the board do it. At a fraction of the cost, OGSM works 100x better for me. Realistically though, if I gave this an honest go, I'm sure I could work out my strokes to hit at a more appropriate level with this setup. At the current moment, I'm simply not a fan and changing my game significantly to convenience a string setup would be detrimental to the consistency I've been trying to build.

Updates to follow as I try to play more with this frame

I just strung up gamma zo tour rough mains and hexy crosses and love it. The hexyfibre does lack durability in the mains but it lasts very well in the crosses and spin is great. It has to be on par with any other string combo out there. Has great feel and control and not overly powerful... That said I am partial to hexyfibre as its my multi of choice...

If you only want a TAD softer, try Forten Sweet or Gamma syngut.

I've heard good things about sweet but OGM is my go to for Syn

Thanks for the input. I'm not particularly worried about durability-- as long as it lasts ~6-10 hours I'm happy.

Yup, sounds about right. Hit about 35 balls with it tonight and was incredibly disappointed. Volleyed great-- had absolutely nothing on ground strokes-- I mean holy cow I couldn't spin the ball over to save my life. Had to switch back because I was in a match play situation and playing 1st court. Also, after 20 balls I already saw fibers coming off...

I'm going to err on the side of caution and actually give this a good hit before I make my final judgement but 8-ball says "outlook not so good"

right now I am using adren. rough, with yonex 850 as cross.

It is nice for the first 3 hours, but then goes down hill, but the adren. still holds tension well.

My impression is that the Adrenaline can't flex/ snap back with the multi cross. It feels like it's stuck in place and that the ball is sliding along the strings. I mean, in a full bed it snaps out and back with relative ease. In a lower strung hybrid it won't budge.

Edit: Serves are ok, I was able to find a consistent groove but I didn't notice anything particularly special about this setup. Easy on the arm, I guess

Durability/Tension: *Edit* Cut out after an hour of average hitting-- The outer coating of the Hexy Fiber was gone though.

Hit a bit more with it-- although I managed, the above definitely applies.

that's ridiculous! this string combo generates the most spin EVER! it's the best hybrid, i've ever tried. your review is worthless. there must be something wrong w/ your strokes. and you strung it too high. this hybrid is best tension at 10-15#s. ;)

You're probably right haha but I've gone from hitting a D2 college player off the court to getting called a little [female dog] by switching frames. My ego can't take that kind of abuse!

Yea i think the reason why smooth string crosses and spin string mains play better is that usually spin strings notch faster than normal circular strings.

Maybe try Adren/ OGSM, as OGSM won't notch as fast probably giving you more spin, if you want softer, maybe try a softer poly. My experience with 3 multis, sensation, NXT and Attraction in the crosses is that multi's always notch like an ass, 1 hour after stringing and it's notched except for NXT which was decent. With PSGD it doesn't get dug into as fast.

Indeed, I think I mentioned somewhere in the top (I know, I'm long winded) but I've tried the Adr/OGSM and enjoyed it before. Personally, I think it's the whole Poly/multi interaction. In my experience, the multi doesn't necessarily notch but rather locks into the poly and doesn't slide/ snap back into place the way a synthetic would. What results is a muted feel on the frame and the sensation of the ball not pocketing/ sliding down the strings before catching. Then again, it could just be the way I play since I have a friend that can hit at a high level in a Prestige Mid with AluRough/X-1 @ 60. Go figure.
