Heard a nice Federer stat today

Was watching Indian Wells and one of the commentators mentioned a nice stat.

Federer had won 73 matches in a row against players outside the top 20 (now 74 after his win today).

Way better than that. He won 124 consecutive matches in slams against opponents ranked outside the top 5.

The streak ended when he lost to the then #6 ranked Del Potro in the 2009 US Open final.

Nadals best streak in this regards is only 24 matches I believe.

The last time he lost to someone outside the top 20 was to Hewitt at Halle in 2010. He was ranked #32 at the time.

I thought his streak is more like 80+ in a row to non top 20 players. Maybe they don't count some tournaments I did (I omitted Davis Cup).

Wow, that is impressive. I guess it's just really hard to beat someone who is better than you in tennis, due to the huge amount of points you have to win to win a match.

TBh, aside from Murray, it doesnt seem like the top guys lose to players outside the top 10 or so that often.

When *is* the last time Nole or Rafa lost to someone outside the top 20?

I am thinking it was not any time soon.

Another interesting stat for Fed would be how many full matches (no retirements) he won with under an hour of playing time. His last one was 57 minutes long :)

Nadal lost to Ivan Dodig in his opening match at 2011 Montreal. Dodig was ranked 32 or something at the time. He then lost to Florian Mayer, ranked 23, in the 3rd round of 2011 Shanghai.

Djokovic lost to Kei Nishikori, also ranked 32 at the time, in the semi-final of 2011 Basel.

Correct.

The next lowest ranked player he lost to was Gasquet, ranked 16, in the 3rd round of 2011 Rome.

Since then, the only players he has lost to have all been top 10ers.

Steady Freddie...immune to large upsets for the most part. Ironic that the thread is started during IW, site of one of his two consecutive losses to Canas in '07 and then-#98-ranked Fish in '08. Other than those and Hewitt's Halle upset, I can only think of Montanes @'10Estoril as totally surprising.
