David Ferrer vs Micheal Chang

Was interesting to hear Todd Woodbridge in commentary yesterday during the Ferrer/Del Potro match:

"Yes, Ferrer is very like a Michael Chang, isn't he? Much heavier off the ground and a bigger serve, of course, but the same 'get everything back with interest and then attack you' approach"

What would he know, though? :)

I was on to something.

We had weirdos shooting down my thread by saying it was a horrible comparison....and should have used hewitt or someone....cant recall

I almost never agree with you Loose Cannon, but this is the exception.

A lot of ppl can't reconcile the idea that modern players are at a higher level than those of the past, that's all..

Well is Ferrer better than Murray? After all, he has a bigger forehand and he gets his serve in 65% of the time.

The answer is no, because he is nowhere near as fast. Chang was just like Andy Murray, big first serve but very low first serve percentage, pusher groundstrokes and lightning fast.

I kind of feel that way......ie dont think Borg-Laver would have a fun time out there vs some of todays guys....

Anyways..I meant cause they are short, quick very great defensive guys who beat people with their will. Wasnt even really comparing certain shots

Thanks for the relucctant co -sign lol

*edit, this was meant for BeHAppy..

do you have a bit of a cognitive deficiency?

how is that an answer to your question in any way?

I just stated their head to head!!!

Your whole Andy Murray proposition is a strawman, anyway! This is a thread about Chang and Ferrer, whre Andy fits in to the picture is utterly irrelevant. As a matter of fact, I totally disagree with your assessment of his tennis. He has HUGE shots, he just goes on the defensive a lot which causes the ignorant to label him a 'pusher'. His record is far superior to Ferrer's, but it is interesting that the head to head is dead even.

Still has no relevance to the original discussion...

Backtracking? from a statement of fact regarding a H2H? Hardly, that statement stands, but it has no importance as I hadn't even considered the question!

Andy Murray has no relevance to this thread, none, zero, so why introduce him at all? It would be like asking if you consider, say, Mats Wilander to be better than Chang, it just isn't relevant!

However, I have now 'answered' you, since that seems to be important to you. But I can't 'backtrack' from something I never said, now can I?

When that statement is placed in the context of an answer to a question, it's obviously an answer to a question.

But keep digging... I mean arguing.

sigh, the statement is a fact premise, as opposed to a value premise.

if you understood that you would realise how silly you sound..

so, now my 'answer' is your strawman?

LOL, you're hilarious, albeit not much of a challenge...

I even responded to your spurious argument, but you are too busy making a fool of yourslef to notice.

so, you concede you have no understanding of 'argument', then?

excellent!

You edited that post after I responded with some internet nerd talk you read on wikipedia that you want to argue with me over, everyone can see the edit time underneath your post. Pathetic.

Deeper and deeper you go...

You called me a cretin and misspelled in the same sentence. What do you expect?

Pathetic.

When you make mistakes, just hold your hand up and say sorry. You'll feel better, really.

Yeah...how did gentleman Andy end up in here?

He and Chand don''t remind me of each other much at all.

Chang and Ferrer both have that short, stumpy look.

Well they're soft hitting retrievers with big first serves and a low 1st serve %.

Both arguably the fastest players of their generations.

They've both lost 3 slam finals.

They both peaked at world no. 2 in the rankings.

The only difference is that Chang had the luck of Lendl cramping against him, and then facing a net rushing serve and volleyer in the final of RG.

and yet you claim Murray is a 'soft hitting retriever'

I don't have to pretend anything, I'm easy to find and have no illusions about my meagre tennis skills and my level 1 coaching ticket..

Murray is a soft hitting retriever. Google the words "Murray" and "pusher" together and you get 826,000 results, with the search suggestions "andy murray is just a pusher" and "Andy Murray Pusher".

Here's a wall Street Journal article about Murray being a pusher:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704423504575212123667809734.html

Murray is a soft hitting retriever. His rally stroke is the softest in the top 100 bar Giles Simon, now that Santoro has retired.

There's nothing wrong with that by the way, but that is definitely Murray's playing style.

I think Chang should be compared to Andy Roddick, not Andy Murray. Murray is a chump who never won a major, while Chang is an all-time great player same as Roddick.

Chang won the 1989 French Open and was runner-up of the 1995 French Open, 1996 Australian Open and 1996 US Open. Chang also won 3 Indian Wells, 1 Miami, 1 Canada and 2 Cincinnatis, and has been runner-up of both the World Championships (now WTF) and the Grand Slam Cup (the ITF's version of the WTF in the 1990s). Chang also had a career high world ranking of number 2, and was one match away from the number 1 ranking at the time of the 1996 US Open final against Sampras.

This all easily beats Ferrer's achievements.

This isn't to compare their achievements, genius.
