plz don't make fun of my component and composite inputs. everything i own is from 1982!

starting the upgrade process is painful.
but im gonna upgrade upgrade (cue beyonce)

break in period. ohhhhh sheeeeeeet.

apparently there is only 1 a/v input so i just have to wait until my hdmi cables arrive and then toss out some of my lame tivos and dvd players.

im getting a little better at BF3 but i used the excuse to buy a 320gb harddrive so i can actually DL the HD graphics for BF3. yeah, that's the ticket! (cue SNL dood)

can't believe this thing works after shoving it in my tiny car. and then i carried it in and set it up by myself. the thing is huge and weighs a ton and is awkward as hel.l. but i was determined to set it up. like a honey badger.

ok peace out. gotta look up bluray players and other gadgets to make the man-cave saweeeeet

quick question for everyone here? are SSD weather and shockproof? Planning to build me a external hard drive. Saw a deal on newegg 240GB SSD (Kingston) for $170. Thinking about pulling trigger.

I doubt it's weather or shock proof much but why would you want an external SSD? You won't see the speed benefits of SSD with USB 2.0 or even 3.0 has enough inherent latencies that it's really a waste to use that money for so little storage space without the speed benefits.

^^^ What he said... just kidding, I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about.

SSD? Sounds like something I caught from the mama-sans in Nam.

cb -- you could put that ssd in an esata drive enclosure. it's about half as fast as internal sata. in real world testing it's marginally faster than usb 3.0. it really comes down to if your pc has usb 3.0 - go with that. if not esata is easy and cheap to outfit to your pc.

for breakfast i had a naked juice protein zone. tasted like a really tasty banana apple smoothie with liquid chalk.

thanks for the advice. What I wanted was something i can put in my backpack for work. I had one external hd broke bcz it couldn't handle the bumps and bruises of metro, driving, big burly men like me, sitting on a sub-compact 2 seaters on metro.
maybe i am better off just buying a couple of big flash drives.

what's for lunch people? i'm thinking bout trying this:

CB, I think that SSDs are overkill if you aren't using it as a boot drive, doubly so if they are bottlenecked by their interface.

As far as shockproof, they are probably as shockproof as anything can be since there are no moving parts but you could probably knock the solder out if you really tried.

hey tech gurus,

i want to build a HD-PVR machine that allows burning onto DVD/blu-ray.
i think ill need this: Hauppauge Colossus PCI Express Internal HD-PVR
is that true?
and if so what else will i need?
i went to some PVR forum and the sticky thread was as long as TWMACs, so im hoping yallz can just break it down for me. i guess i need to figure out which channels have HDCP copy protection for different providers. guess i can still use component cables or sumn.
oooh so complicated.

p.s. - should i get direcTV? you like it?

A shorter and more to the point HTPC guide for the AMD chipset: http://www.anandtech.com/show/5906/amd-llano-htpc-builders-guide/1

Engadget also has a pretty straight forward builder's guide: http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/31/how-to-build-a-multi-talented-htpc-for-roughly-1-000/

Last time I priced out direct TV, it seemed like it would cost an arm and a leg. Seems like they have some good programming for tennis (channels covering several different courts during GS) but it was too much to switch from Verizon.

Used to eat there when I worked for Booz in Crystal City.

I need to find somewhere to eat tonight before my adventure on U Street.

dude, this is the place I hit all the time. I was there three times last week. I usually call ahead and drive it back.

Their Kubieh is good but alittle spicy (in terms of spices), bone-in chicken is good, but if you feel like spending $13, go for the lamb chops! It's awesome!
You have to wait at least 15 min for your food cause all their kabobs are cooked over a charcoal pit (it's in front of you).
Remember, when ordering (and the guy in the front has the personality of the Kabob Na zi), tell them no salad! You'll get two sides instead of one.
They got great sides! It's alittle greasy. But it's sooooo.... good.
Lahori Choley (chickpeas) I think you can only get it cooked right at this place and Ravi Kabob's down the road.
Spinach and Potato. It has a good kick to it. But really not into spinach.
Since today is Friday they serve Haleem (Goat cooked in this lentil stew. has a really good rich consistency)
and Bindi stew (Okra) didn't care for it too much. I prefer my okra the Indian way, dry and fried.
Oh yeah, get some of their raw onions and squeeze some lemon on there. It's goes really well with the sides.

Also, they bake their breads in a gas tandoor. Really good chewiness to their bread. Goes well with the cilantro/mint yogurt mix they give.
I'll definitely go next week again. if ur free and want to meet at Smithsonian, I can drive up there.

@JRK: Have you been to Crystal City Restaurant? =) That's VA's version of a boobie bar.

Haha!

One of the gals I work with juices regularly, and brings it in sometimes. Most of them taste really terrible!

I've had the first one you posted before. Not bad. I know there is no added sugar, but the sugar is still pretty high.

Have you tried the low sugar muscle milks? They have some good flavors too (banana smoothie...cake batter, yes, I said CAKE BATTER!)

I think I'm going to try to go Friday.

Gonna take a cab straight there since I'll be drinking. The wife and I ate at some place right off U Street (kinda near Bohemian Caverns) during restaurant week. Can't remember what it was called, but it was nice inside and the food was pretty good.

Haha, when I first moved here someone told me that place had great steaks. I didn't go because at the time I wasn't eating meat. A few years later a female co-worker told me that she was tricked into going there by some guys that she worked with (during her time at the Pentagon). Then she told me what was inside.

I dont understand, if thats the flavor how could not say that? Im not exactly sure how cake batter tastes though. I guess it depends on what kind of cake. Was it choclate cake batter? vanilla? sponge? pound?

Anyway muscle milk aint bad.

So wish I had a PC for this game. The super huge maps in the next DLC are going to require more than 24 players - Caspian border can be a ghost town in conquest.

Metro on conquest is pretty fun sometimes. It's pretty fast paced and a lot of battles. Plus once you push the other side off the "B" flag, you basically have them spawn trapped.

Should have to pay full price for XBL, you can usually find a gold card out there for about $10 off normal price.

sap: dang ur fast! told u not to get them salad. never ask kabob palace for salad. Cardinal rule #2. #1 is never ask for anything that goes oink.

which side did u pick? Jannal is good too. But tell them their friends at KP says hi! =P

CB.. do you drive to work? where do you even park. must be govie to have such long lunch breaks.
Yep, drives to work alot recently. Metro is not bad, but their train schedule is really inconsistent nowadays. I can stand taking longer, but I can't stand being late 10 min's one day and early for 15 the next. Really throws my schedule off after work to prepare for family dinner and getting kids.

Usually I just order ahead and take back. Really only takes 20 mins roundtrip, and usually if it's before 11:45pm. 14th street bridge is not that bad. Yes, like TC, me fed too.

nothing really stands out. I always like spices that put hair on my chest. Not many other things can prove my manihood otherwise. Believe me I know, I was on the tennis courts today at Clarksburg. I tweaked my right knee. Signs of Senior Citizen 3.5 league is not too far in my future.

I usually just goto Minvera. Although if you feel like veggie only, Madra's Palace is not bad either. Their owner is from a part of Indian that uses Coconut in many dishes. You can find many dishes from anywhere else there.

i wanted to try this Indian Buffet place in College Plaza. Where the Magruder's is on Rockville Pike. There's a KFC there. Suppose to have really good grub there. Oh yeah, I also like Mem Shahib (off of Nicholson Lane; near White Flint; next to a Jewish Supermarket). Can't find any $7.99 places anymore that serves goat curry and really good Puri. (fried leafen bread) Our very own Giggle's Sandbagger loves Butter Chicken from there. And he's a harsh critic of Butter Chicken.

If anyone really likes authentic Choley Bhatori (sorry probably spelled it wrong). But it's this chickpea dish served with two Puri's. One of my co-workers (whom lived all his life in Delhi swears by this place). It's at the Chantilly Lotte's instead the food court there. I've had it once and its good. Also, I heard at least 3 Indian folks claimed that if that place opens in Delhi, they will pay for it there.

Hmmm, just wanted to run a menu by ya'll. I'm the chef-in-charge for next Friday night's dinner at our Legion Post. We typically have three entrees: a "special" and fish and shrimp (lotta Catholics and Southern folks weened on "(fried seafood) on Friday"). They usually clamor for a grilled chicken I do (with a nice dijon/cilantro sauce) but I'm ready to try something different. I'm thinking...beef fajitas.

Won't have the opportunity to do it on an outdoor grill but the commercial setup inside is an amateur-wannabees dream. I've also got an 80-yr old former Marine who, cheerfully!!!, does all the KP. That stainless steel sparkles!

We typically serve about 20-25 "specials" and another dozen each of the seafood items. I'll have an assistant chef and expediter who'll handle the deep-fryer so I really only have to concentrate on the grill/main entree, sides and dessert.

So...typically, I'd grill the entire skirt (or flank...or whatever cut of meat we can afford and is available) and, after resting, slice it up for our family to "make their own." Here, obviously, I'll have to make some logistically accommodations: before marinading, divide the flank into 2- or 3- portion sizes (so I can grill to order) and have the peppers/onions/mushrooms all sliced to grill to order as well. A little more intensive than standard fare but I think it could work.

Fresh guac and salsa...and a key lime pie.

Other than "spanish" rice, any other "seasonal" or "cultural" side suggestions?

Entree, 2-sides, tea/lemonade/coffee & a dessert for $8. Not a bad deal (but it means I can't go $$$ wild with ingredients). Veteran members and their "guests" always welcome. :)

Lotta work on the prep side, but I'll have plenty of "help" for the three real hours of dinner service. Labor of Love, to be sure.

Hi AQ. I was in a similar situation at my work's fundraiser.
I wasn't the project manager for it. But I know that instead of flank steak (which runs about $6.99/lb), we used flap meat ($4.99/lb @ costco) and did faita's. You can't tell the difference once it's cut. You can put whatever marinate you want the night before bcz it'll soak through the meat because it's alittle thinner.

If you have a rice cooker, you can always cook some rice and throw in some mixed veggies and spices for a quick seasoned rice side.

Speaking of grilled chicken breast. I tried ATK's. it's came out really well. Almost forgot to wash the brine off and pat it down before grilling.
