Grass is 90's fast again!

It really is. Wimbledon championships and again at this Olympics it's been 90's fast. Maybe they couldn't use the rye because of the quick regrowth they required for the Olympics?

I didn't think it looked especially quick at the Championships but it looks quick now, watched Hewitt hitting winners all over the place against Cilic, needs to be a pretty fast surface for that to happen!

In a remarkable break from normal practice, I agree with BeHappy (sort of)

It doesn't look as fast as 90s grass but the wet weather since Wimbledon seems to have sped it up somewhat.

It's super fast bc Nadal isn't there to show you how slow it is :D

Haha

And Wimbledon was fast because Nadal lost to a big server.

But you know, it does seem to have slowed down over the years when you compare it to say, 2003-2004. The grass seemed to be playing fairly quick in the 2004 final, and there was plenty of bad bounces. Compared to that, in the 2009 final it was playing like a hard court and relatively slower.

Nothing to take away from Nadal, he was so quick to adapt to the surface. I was watching the 2006 Wimbledon final and contrary to popular opinion, he was playing really well. By 2008 he had added more finesse to his game, and that helped him to finally win it.

Yes thank you for the truth. Every tournament Nadal plays turns slow except for the Indoor hardcourts season.

1.) Nadal court speed changing stench can not overcome the Bercy crowd Arrogance stench.

2.) WTF lights burn Nadal stench.

I don't know if it's fast or not, but it is certainly very slippery and positively a disgrace to show the rest of the world that doesn't normally follow tennis that grass just isn't a good surface for today's game. Every player out there is slipping like they are on ice.

I just love all these guys with built-in speedometers. Hopefully, the equipment does not interfere with your routine vision.

Sitting at best in front of their TVs (some are using tiny computer screens) they see whether the grass plays 2 km/hour faster, or 3 km/hour slower.

Despite all the calibration tests, numerous statements from the Wimbledon management and ITF about the blooming grass, arm chair pundits are still chewing this lucrative subject. Bon appetit!

Didn't understand what point you are trying to debate.

Tsonga was the first serve and volleying semi finalist in about 10 years and Serena Williams served a record number of aces.

You have no clue what you are talking about.

If you actually watched tennis instead of moaning all the time you'd notice the differences with your naked eye.

Apparently it's impossible to judge how fast things move with your eye.

Can you imagine her trying to cross the road without getting run over?

She will argue that the cars don't bounce in the street, so that isn't a valid comparison.

Is this a joke? I don´t see anybody remotely far playing as the 1990´s players...you never watched tennis before 2000, isn´t it?

I'm pretty sure there is zero difference in the speed from Wimbledon, they didn't dig up the entire court.

I'd rather watch a 5hr nadal baseline match than two s&v players in a 90s servefest with every set being won 7-6 .

I'm waiting for you to tell me Jan Kodes was 12 feet tall and faster than Usain Bolt.

Look everyone, this is 90's grass:
http://youtu.be/7iukH8lLKiA?t=20m15s

Kodes, on old grass, would dominate current field at Wimbledon playing with his left arm...but, even if he was one of the best ever tennis athletes, I don´t think he could beat Ussain Bolt ( unless somebody proves that Bolt has been underdope during the last 5 years....)

No one on this forum has ever played on professional grass. So it's kind of pointless to state how much FASTER the courts were in the 90s.

Common guys.........

Wimbly grass is still the same perennial rye, its just that this is the wettest Wimbly in 10 years which keeps the grass damp and slick. Topspin doesn't work as well and the ball skids through quicker, thats all. Big servers will be bigger and flat groundies will be rewarded.

Cheers, TennezSport

I was right, wasn't I?

The grass is fast again and slices are staying low. Players are winning at the net and ace counts are high.

Vindication is nice.

You have never lived. You need to try standing nose up to the windbreaks/sight screens when Curren or Denton was serving.

Ow, but funny.

Always fast the first few days until the grass gets worn down. Then it might as well be a hard or clay court for the rest of the tourney. The same thing did happen back in the 90's, but back then the court got so chewed up that you didn't dare let the ball bounce because you never knew where it was going to go, unlike now with the new clay bed underneath. You had no choice but to play S&V due to the bad bounces. It still amazes me that Chris Evert could win there playing the baseline, although Martina usually crushed her at Wimbledon playing S&V. Even Borg played S&V to win his Wimbledon championships.

No, I don't think so. It's fast-ish in Week 1 but the real catch lies in week 2. A surface doesn't become fast or slow based on Nadal's results.

I think it's because of the cold weather so far this year. Grass is retaining more water in its leaves than it usually does by this time of year.

90's grass speed is overrated. It is fast. But not lightning fast like some make it out to be. Serve and Volley obviously was more common in those days. Thus shorter points.

Grass always has been like that before 2001-2002, for the most part of 200 years
since an international competition started.

In fact, 75% of tennis was played on that classic grass until 1970, AFAIK.

It was always 1st strike game. Averaged 2.5 strokes per point. Look how
Laver, Gonzalez, and Hoad played on this surface.

It's the different tennis after 2001-2003 period. In a way, we are watching clay court
tennis for last decade or so.
