Do you think Roddick will come out of retirement with the win?

With his win against Milos, do you think he'll come out of retirement? He was playing much more aggressively, less slicing and great forehand shots.

Doubt it. What's the point? He too old, his game's too ragged, to make a proper dent at the higher end of the game with consistency.

No. Winning a one match exhibition vs someone who isnt even a top player himself in no way compares to week to week tournament tennis.

Absolutely, after beating Raonic while clowning around doing impersonations, and serving with considerably less mph's, he probably has all the confidence in the world and will be a threat at the Australian.

If we deleted all threads that match with one of these reasons, this forum would be empty.

I love it though, I'm saving this and using it in the future if I see a good opportunity! And the last reason that you added yourself totally belongs in this list.

For one match on a fast court set up to give Sampras the best chance to win -- Yeah, maybe he was.
Which is pretty impressive. However, past that - No.

(As I said at the time, there have been guys who were retired who came back to play Davis Cup and turned in great one-shot performances, so who knows.)

I'd love it if Roddick became a commentator, he usually has something interesting to say. But he isn't coming out of retirement. He didn't retire because he couldn't play well occasionally, he reached the 4th round of his last tournament. He retired because he couldn't consistently play well and trying to do so was just physically and mentally exhausting him.

I wish.

At the beginning of Raonic match, Roddick was bad.

His serve was pretty bad, or should I say 15-20 MPH slower for the majority of the match. He went for a couple of big ones in the 3rd set and by big I mean 115mph(yikes)

As the match wore on he got a little more competent hitting groundies, and showed that he still has an underated net game(even in retirement)

But Roddick wanted to win waaaaay more then Milos. It was good to see Roddick actually kind of fighting for the match toward the end of it...but it was sad to know that it was just a one of Exo.

I wish Roddick would have taken NOT retired, but instead taken like 3 months off to rest, recover, rehabilitate the hamburger helper shoulder and then make a calculated slow come back with about 6-8 weeks of training leading into the Aussie Open.

I believe HAD Roddick taken the 3 months off to heal, without announcing his retirement, he could have come back and been a bit more rejuvenated Physically and mentally. The fact is though that Roddick has instead just been eating fried food, getting fat and living the good life. I think a part of him missed the competition and would love to compete again...but the commitment....it's too much....

...and to come back from doing jack squat for 3 months would taken some serious leg work. It's a shame he isn't hungry enough to try...

I think Roddick just realized that winning a major or even Masters title was a long shot at this point. Yeah he hadn't had any major injuries, but his ground game was never the best and was only going to get worse with time and he lost some explosiveness on the serve. The current top 4 is too strong for someone like Andy to win big titles and he has had a successful enough career that he was never going to be happy for long winning Memphis or Atlanta and calling it a good season.

Let him go:) He's had a good career. There are so many players who are around Roddick's level that never won a slam. Nalbandian and Haas for example. I will always remember his rivalry with Federer. Although it was very one-sided, you always felt that (especially in those wimbly finals) Roddick had a chance, but never managed to take it.
He also has a very likable personality. I liked watching Roddick's interviews more than anyone else's. Even his on court antics (racquet breaking, the petty arguments with the umpires) were very amusing to me because he just acts how he wants to. It's a nice change up from the other players who act how they are supposed to act.

And to be honest, the last 3 years or so, his groundstrokes just weren't good enough to keep it up with the rest of the top players, so maybe it's better that he quit now.

Roddick hasn't played at anything like his old level since he won 2010 Miami. It's been steadily downhill ever since. He once said that he would quit if his ranking drifted too far outside the top ten. He was #39 when he decided to call it a day.

I'm sure he could have carried on for a few more years, like Hewitt, even winning one or two more small titles but generally struggling, like Hewitt, to get past the early rounds of the big tournaments. Once he realised that he was never again going to be able to compete for top titles and had no chance of regaining his top ten ranking, it was the end for him. I guess he is just one of those guys who can't get motivated unless he can mix it with the best!

He's achieved things that 99% of players can only dream of and his place in tennis history is assured. I'm sure we will continue to see him at various exhos and eventually the Seniors Tour.

But yes, I will miss him too.

I agree with all that and I perfectly understand how reaching that point for a former #1 and 5 time slam finalist is too much to want to keep going. In fact I often wonder how someone like Hewitt manages himself to keep going, but it admirable I suppose that he is able to. I dont think if I were in his situation I would be able to motivate myself to work so hard each day knowing where I once was, and where I am now, already being in my 30s.

The win doesn't say much. Milos is a giraffe and can't really return well. His ground game is pretty horrible as well.

Arod takes down Murray 2 and 3 - playing some really good stuff.

He should unretire.

I'd worry though that his unretirement would be rather short given that his shoulder has finally decided to call it a day (surprised this just happened now). He'd probably be forced to resort to pure serve and volley, and while that's a style he's unexpectedly good at, it's what happens after the first volley that's usually a bit suspect.

Would probably have been the best thing ever for him to play one more Wimbledon final as a wild card and win. Now when did that happen before?:)

I watched a bit of this match. Murray was not hitting ANY, and I mean ANY, first serves over 123. He was spinning it in, and I saw quite a few second serves not even make it to 80 mph, and not have much direction or placement. His second serve was honestly not a whole lot better than some first serves I've seen. He was pushing in that match... it was obvious.

Roddick should stay retired; he's not going to be beating these guys in majors.

If Roddick took a long time off and got his shoulder back together he might be able to make a run if he just focused on one or two big tournaments for the year. That being said, he's not that type of person, and would want to compete every tournament, which would of course hurt his shoulder big time.

That's how it looked at times in the Raonic exo...

I'm assuming (or at least hoping) that Murray wasn't taking this match at all seriously!

Well, he was grinning from ear to ear when they went to net at the end :)

Andy M didn't look to be trying on serve and there wasn't a whole lot on his groundies - ARod was having his usual exho laughs but looked much sharper and more up for it.

Slightly off topic, isn't it coincidence that these two Andrews both won 1 US Open... and lost Wimbledon final to the same guy?

In his post-match interview after beating Murray in Miami, Roddick made these comments:

"If we had gone three sets I would've had a full body cramp and it would've been awkward for all of you," said Roddick, who kept a running dialogue with the crowd. "There's no comeback (to tennis for me).

"Andy was nice to me tonight."

Roddick has put on almost two kilograms (four pounds) since retiring following the U.S. Open. He says he's content in retirement and is playing a lot of golf.

"I don't miss the travel at all," Roddick said. "It's nice coming here and seeing familiar faces. I still enjoy hitting tennis balls, but I haven't lost that part of it. I haven't lost any of the innocent parts of tennis. I just do it in front of less people."

So no thoughts of making a comeback. Just enjoying his retirement.

Roddick made a smart move by retiring, his career was hitting the "downward spiral" stage anyway, losing his footing in the top ten, eventually falling out of the top 20, ect.
