Black poly recommendation

Hi all,

I have. Head youtek prestige MP normally play with lux bb rough. Looking to get a new poly that's a bit cheaper and better tension maintenance than the lux. Was looking at technifibre black code, Dunlop Black widow, volkl cyclone or possibly rpm blast. Be interested to hear people's thoughts or if any prestige users have used or use any of these polys.

Thanks

Tourna Big Hitter Black 7. I would go with the 17G in a tight string pattern and 16G in a 16 x 19.

I have RPM Blast in my APD right now. The tension maintenance is alright, but it has lost it's "specialness" already. I've hit for about 20 hours since I got it strung a week ago, the rest of the time it has been sitting. The glossy quality is gone so the strings don't snap back as much. It plays like any other good quality poly now.

I'm planning on trying Lux Savage and Tecnifibre Black Code in the near future, so I would suggest those.

Totally unrelated, but if you haven't broken RPM after 20 hours of hitting, then you aren't at a level where you need poly.

The harder you hit the better poly performs, but most people can benefit from a poly if the pace of their shot is sufficient.

It's not match play...and I don't hit very flat, so I don't break poly anyways. It just gets very loose.

Thanks for the responses so far. How does the big hitter black compare to the volkl cyclone. What holds tension better?

Hitting flat doesn't break poly. Hitting with spin does. If you've played with poly for 20 hours, whether it's match play or practice, and you still haven't broken it, then you don't have the swing speed to fully utilize it.

Yep.... QFT, poly is only beneficial for people who can break it.

In my experience, poly breaks more from stretching than sawing, but whatever.

I was unaware that practicing volleys and rallying doubles put a lot of wear and tear on your strings.

But seriously, step off of your medium height e-coaching horse.

If you live near San Diego, I know you don't db, I would love to hit with you and film it.

Not cool... Because he is right...

I can break a 16g poly in ~5hrs of match play.... Always from the mains being worn down and sawed through. I'm the type of player who should be using poly. And poly "stretching"and breaking? Please explain.

It's not about the wear and tear on your strings. Its the fact that polyester has terrible tension maintenance. If you use it because it takes 20+ hours for you to break the string, then you're using it for the wrong reason.

I haven't seen poly get sawed through, it always does this http://www.grebo.net/~peter/twforum/broken_poly.jpg .

Like I said, I was working on volleys and rallying at 10% with my friends. I just got a new racket and am still getting used to it. I used to play with other non-poly strings but I saw through them in 2 hours regardless of how lightly I hit, so I do need poly.

I responded like that because I don't like to make excuses, especially to random people on the internet. He made a huge assumption about my game based on 20 hours of hitting. What type of hitting? He had no idea, and didn't care to ask before making a rude comment. Even if he was right and I had slow strokes, there was next to no reason to say it, and it derailed this thread.

I use it because it is durable and I hit harder and with more spin than non-poly strings. I try to not break my strings. If they get loose I couldn't care less, I can't afford to be restringing my racket every week, or even every month.

Ok, makes sense. Ever try Kevlar?

Thats weird, always gets notched and breaks.

To get the thread on track, Black Widow is a good soft spinny poly... BHB7 is nice and has a little more pop.

Weiss Cannon Black 5 Edge. One of my opponents called it "back edge" because the topspin always seemed to bring the ball just barely in the court at the last moment.

The point still stands that after 20 hours it's lost more tension than any other kind of string. Whether you're bashing the hell out of the ball (clearly this isn't the case) or hitting volleys, and practicing doubles (I break more strings in doubles than singles, so...) Anyway, if you're using it just for its durability, then you're using poly for the wrong reason.

No, I'm considering it, though. I really want a lower powered string though. Big Banger Rough is what I am probably going to get the next time I restring my racket.

Black Widow in 15G would be perfect.... When it loses tension it doesn't turn into as much of a rocket launcher as other strings.

OP, to answer your question, Genesis Black Magic is a good all round black polyester. If you like feel and provide spin on your own, then it's a good choice. WeissCANNON BlackFiveEdge is a solid baseliner string. It has lower power and is stiffer than Black Magic, but it provides fantastic spin and has excellent tension maintenance. Discho Iontec also gets great reviews for an all round polyester, although according to some, the earthworm color plays better than the black.

Personally, I would avoid using RPM Blast or Black Code as they are overpriced given their relatively short life span.

I said the tension maintenance was alright...I got it strung at 56.2 (measured with a RacketTune) and now it is at 48.6. That is alright to me. Rallying doubles I hit roughly half the balls I would hit if I were rallying singles so...

Thanks for all the replies leaning towards the weiss cannon black edge or the genesis black magic. Which one has better tension maintenance?

You might also consider Signum Pro Hyperion (non-geometric) or Tornado (textured, heptagonal). Their product line has always been known for polys that retain tension quite well. If color isn't as critical as tension maintenance, their Poly Plasmas (salmon) drop the least.

I have tried these black poly strings.
MSV, Tornado, B5E, BHB7, and RPM Blast.
Tornado and RPM lose tension fast.
They are all spin strings....depend on your spin style and how do you like it.
B5E is the softest.
BHB7, Tornado, and RPM are crispy.
Tornado and BHB7 have more power.
In my opinion, try and find one that is compatible with your racket and fit your playing style. I like RPM Blast 16G on the new APD 2013 from the 2nd hour to around the 10th hour after that it is losing its characteristics.

Tornado is much cheaper in Europe.

Spiky Shark~

Kirschbaum Spiky Black Shark 17 delivers spin well but with limited feel.
Only reason I'm recommending it is because it's 50% off !!! $_$

Thanks all for the recommendations, my Lux Alu Rough broke today, so I need to get new strings asap

As I am in Australia, all that is really available here locally in black that I can get asap is, Signum Pro Tornado, Genesis Black Magic, Technifibre Black Code, Lux Savage. Which one would be the best overall, particularly tension maintenance. I will order some Discho and weiss Cannon maybe some Volkl down the track, but in the meantime need to drop the racquet in tomorrow for a re string.
Any advice be appreciated
Thanks

Of those, I would prefer Black Magic. With that said, it will feel fairly different than the ALU that you are used to.

I ended up getting volkl cyclone 1.25 in my racquet. Had my first hit with it today very comfortable string good control great spin. Absolutely love this string. I think it will be my new string of choice. I'd still like to try rpm team weiss cannon black edge and maybe lux 4g. But I'm very happy with the cyclone.

I've used Lux BB 1.30 (and Alu Power) for quite some years.
Lux really stands on a place of its own, so... not much to say about it.
Anyway I also came to conclude that it was too expensive and searched for alternatives.
Now I'm using Black Code 1.28, and I find it great. Very confortable, and it sure grabs the ball that thing! %) (and I spin a lot) The problem w/ BC is durability :|
I also tried RPM and that's quite some string!! Maybe better than BC. The problem here in Portugal is that it is significantly more expensive, so for now and staying w/ the BC... though looking for a similar more durable alternative.
