The "What's Wrong With Her?" Thread

The womens game desperately needs a fresh young face in at least the top 10. I'm sure it is starting to get boring for non tennis fanatics, always seeing a Vika Serena final or Vika Maria semi.

For sure. Though, I have to say that Serena/Vika is an entertaining match-up for me. Just because Vika is, at this point, about the only player who can hang with Serena when the latter is even moderately GOATing.

But I'd love for Stephens or Robson (or better yet, someone totally out of nowhere) to have a breakout year.

cibulkova just handed kvitova a couple of breadsticks (beat her 1 and 1). yeah, cibulkova isn't exactly a slouch but what is wrong with kvitova? did she just run into the wrong player on the wrong day, is she still "hungover" from winning wimbledon 2 years ago or has she already peaked?

Word is she had an asthma attack a few days prior to that match. I'm beginning to think she has more of an anxiety attack to deal with the pressure of being at the elite level.

Ivanovic's game is going to be of interest this year - she seems to be happy with Nigel Sears, and I think she might be able to take a serious run at one of the slams.

Or we'll just be left screaming "What's wrong with her?!" at the tv...

Stephen's just fed Halep a bagel to make her way into the Quarters at Hobart. Disappointed her & Robson drew one another in R1, but Stephens could grab her first title her - would be a great start to her 2013. Beginning of a break out year maybe..?

If Stephens wins her next match against fellow American Lauren Davis, she'll secure a rank of 25th (passing Venus). Not bad for Sloane. Though it's not likely, if she wins this tournament she'll end up 21st or 22nd, passing Jankovic (hah, hah...)

yeah, i watched her first set at the hopman against the spanish chick. ana lost that match but during the first couple games of the first set she was hitting the ball well, particularly off the fh wing. it didn't seem like she had the yips on her serve like she's had in the past. i didn't see the rest of the match so i will temper my optomism, but this is closer to the "old ana" (the one who won the french) in a while.

Oh please...Ivanovic has shown brief signs of life every year since she fell off the map only to be forgotten again when she can't come up with the goods. This year should be no different.

yes, a shame. :(

Ana is completely finished. She will never get back to the top of her game. Her mental strength will never be able to recover. Even if she can somehow manage to get back into the top 10, she won't be able to win close matches or be able to deal with the pressure.

Ah good - the Crystal Ball Brigade are here to tell us what will happen so we don't actually have to watch the tennis :)

Joking aside - I'm just saying it'll be interesting to see how Ana does now she has come out and said she's actually with her coach. Not predicting the Phoenix will rise again, but we'll see.

What's her game like? Never seen her, hardly heard of her

to be honest, tonight was the first time i've watched her ... and I was only half watching while doing something else ... but I was listening to the call of the match.

to begin with, she's young: just 17 (compared to Li Na's 30). Madison Keys qualified to play this tournament, and I assume she'll be playing AO also. She plays right-handed, has powerful groundstrokes for her age and dominant serves over 100 mph. Obviously exciting for American women's tennis, I doubt that she's even graduated high school yet. She lives in Florida, trains at the Chris Evert Academy in Boca Raton.

today against Li, she made a lot of australian fans with her relatively big serve and the way she was speeding around the court. She started the week at world no. 135, but she earned 120 points by making it to the Sydney QF, so that ranking w/b improving. She beat Lucie Safarova 62 61 in the first round of the main draw, then beat Jie Zheng 61 64 to face Li in the QF

I look forward to seeing her compete at AO, but she did appear to be in danger of experiencing a wardrobe malfunction the way she was bouncing around today!

Angelique Kerber was a beast today vs. Sveta, walking all over her with a short digression in the middle of the second set. You could see her determine not to let the match go to a decider and simply came back from 1-4 down to take the second set in addition to the first. Her opponent in the semifinal w/b Cibulkova

Thanks for the info - I'll look out for her. And let's hope for no wardrobe malfunctions.

Madison is the most promising of the youngsters, IMO. I hope she pans out; the US really needs at least a decent player, even if she doesn't win a slam.

Kerber hit 37 winners... in 2 sets?? And hit more winners than Kuznetsova?? Okay.....

Cibulkova spanked Errani? At this rate the AO will have quite a few upsets.

This has been a good week for Sveta, won 6 matches in 6 days and lost against a quality opponent (Sveta also was +3 on her W/UE which is amazing for her).

After being out for 6 months I think she can do well this year. Maybe the exteded period off has rekindled some desire for her?

Kuznetsova is the ultimate "dangerous floater." Yeah, she can be very inconsistent match to match, or even within a match, but she can beat almost any player under the right conditions.

What do you mean by "now she has come out and said she is actually with her coach?" She has been training with Nigel Sears for a while now so what are you referring to?

Barthel, with her uncopyable tempo and pace (hint: Kimikko Date), played her sublime classic but modern tennis again.
Entirely elegant and graceful yet so much understated power.
Was very very solid today.
No slouch Pironkova just didn't know what to do out there.
6-3, 6-3 Barthel!

I wonder...

Is Barthel the Cinderella who is masquerading as a maid for now?

Will Barthel jumbo-size her magical elements and finally step into the plate and start hitting home runs this year?

Certainly one of very exciting questions of 2013 season!

Next up, Stephens vs Davis

Error Na coming out against Radwanska... Ugh!

But this is WTA... Li has a break point..... ARad saves it and holds for 5-3.

1st set ends on a failed drop shot attempt from Li. 6-3 Radwanska.

1st set
Rad 7w/8u
Li 15w/23u

Stephens v. Davis is not panning out to be what i was hoping for.

Very disappointing from Davis.
I guess Davis is a fine player in her own right.
But just can't detect any upside room in Davis' tennis.
Davis seems like a lower-case Wozniacki (with all the negative connotation which comes with it...)

But Stephens is wild.
Stephens can be carnival wild some day.

What a season 2013 is gonna be!
We got some "big, big" questions to be answered by some "big, big" elite ladies of tennis...

Well no more tennis for me today.

Stephens looking a bit tired. Glad to see the time warning on Davis, all that ball bouncing between/under the legs is annoying.

It's good match na rad... pulling for Lina . never liked pushers

Lol. A pusher who hits drop shots and comes forward to volley almost more than any player on tour.

This Davis/Stephens match is compelling. Davis is speeding around and smacking the ball all over the place, for better or worse (mostly better.) Showing a lot of heart. Sloane is probably the better player but is going bonkers with frustration. You can tell that it means a lot for these girls to be the "next American hope", which the media are clamoring to anoint.

BP for Davis....DEUCE!

Sloane holds for 6-5.

1st time watching Davis as well, both seem incredibly stable on the mental front; hope for the WTA. Good match.

Cibulkova putting the heat on Kerber. Up 6-2.

Kerber strikes back. Up 4-1 in the 2nd.

Kerber takes the 2nd 6-4. Going to a 3rd.

I really hope Domi can make top 10 this year. I wish Tennis Channel had showed the errani qf. I would love to see that beatdown!
