Here we go - Premier time.

Draw is 56S, top 8 get a bye to second round.

Points to defend:

Vika 900
Serena 0
Maria 0
AgRad 395
Kerber 70
Errani 0
Kvitova 0
Woz 0
Stosur 620

Li Na misses out because of injury.

So - will the Glorious Vichka rise again on her harpy wings to emerge Vichtorious once more, emitting a howling of blessing upon RedFoo as she does so?

Or will Queen Serene, Sugar-P or someone else ruin the party?
There are serious points on the table here, and it looks like the Pastel Trousered One will have to win if she is to remain head of the table.

Who are we excited to see in this one? I can't wait to see more of the Sloane Ranger, and of course hope Laura continues to improve.

We should pay more attention to Barthel.

Mona Barthel.

The one with Grafian serving & forehand.
Kvitovanian backhand.
Kimiko Datean timing.

Just amazing!

Her name isn't even up there... :?

Kidding. I like Barthel. But those descriptions are over-the-top.

3 - 1 Barthel.

Barthel impressive today.

So far making Kerber look like a total underdog...

Serena regains #1 by making the semis! She was impressive off the ground against Gavrilova today, although her serve was atrocious particularly in the second set.

And lol @ Kvitovanian backhand like that's some kind of compliment.

3 - 1 Barthel with another love game !

The world #6, that is Kerber, completely has no idea what to do in face of Barthel's all-around dominance.

Incredible!

And with an ace, Barthel wins the set 6 - 2

Thats 6-1, 6-2 Barthel over Kerber

Barthel disposes world #6 in a sheer tour de force !

Mona Barthellllllllllllllll !

worthy member of our redemption squad

I saw Barthel for the first time in her tournament win a couple of weeks ago, and really enjoyed watching her. Maybe this will be a big year for her.

was very impressed with her win over Errani. Her forehand is the TRUTH.

These Premier 5s go as follows:

900 620 395 225 125 70 1

By the way, that's a really stupid system the WTA uses - after Slams you have Premier Mandatorys (1000), Premier 5 (900), Premier (470), and Internationals (280). They should have named them ATP style, with the winner's points as a part of the name. It's easier to understand.

As said above, 900. And we have a bit of an odd situation where Vika can win it and lose her #1 spot. Poor harpy. She'll have to re-energise in the nest she's made in RedFoos hair.

After all that, Vichtoriaus got the reverse bagel on Oprah to win 6-2 in the first and is now 4-1 up. Girl not messing about, must be a sale on at United Colors of Benneton.

Stephens about to drop out, shame; she's super cool. Ursula is threatening to come out of her sisters shadow for a little bit and is 1 set up against Vinci. The All-Rad Final is still on, folks.

GSM Zakopalova. Shame for Stephens, fought back from 5-1 down in the TB to 5-5, then lost 7-5.

Shows she is overrated. People were hailing her the next big thing after she won that Serena match at the AO, a match she would have never won had Serena been healthy.

interesting how not one of the tennis experts who were there at the australian open and who could see s.williams in person and close up said anything but "I can't see past serena," when asked to predict the winner. iow, in their opinions, s.williams was healthy enough to win ..... same thing they said before she got knocked out of wimbledon and us open 2011 and miami 2012, when she got beat by Bartoli, Stosur and Wozniacki respectively.

Stephens needs to learn how to close. she needs to 'cowboy up!'... or cowgirl up rather...

maybe try to volley/come in once in a while in key games. could do well to look at aggressive players (especially 'closers') on the mens side in particular... federer, sampras, borg? etc... they know how to go for the kill. or maybe even ferrer in terms of keeping pressure on in key points (doesn't choke, ever).

i can't think of equivalents on womens tour. possibly navratilova? maybe Serena, but she has a different style, 'gets all up in her opponent's grill' so to speak. I doubt that it would suit sloane's temperament though.

she has potential, but needs to realise that she can be a 'nice' and still be able to close when needed. it doesn't have to be either or.

Alright! Some interesting matches today,

AgRad vs Ivanovic is the most interesting one I think, as well as Woz vs Barthel.

I kind of fancy Ivanovic to upset Rad (although I don't think she's ever beaten her?), and Woz vs Barthel seems a bit of a coin flip, as does Kvitova vs Petrova.

Interested to see if Ursula can get any change at all out of Serena, and who can resist the alure of the World Number 1 opening her wings (and her vocal chords) against someone barely in the top 50. It's feeding time for Vich.

I predict 3rd round victories for; S. Williams, M. Sharapova, P. Kvitova, V. Azarenka, S. Kuznetsova, D. Hantuchova, M. Barthel and A. Radwanska.

Aga and Ana is always a fun match-up. Definitely a favorable one for Aga, but it can be compelling if it's close, as the second set was.

Wozni gets a 2 set win over Barthel. Good result, she's never dropped a set against her.

Has anyone see her play this year? I haven't, other than the "shot-of-the-day" clip on the first day of this tournament.

Is she playing any more aggressively, or has she just raised the level of her trademark game?
