The "classified" paintjobs files... (Crazy Marketing Stunts)

So, this thread is about crazy moves brands made just to sponsor one pro player.

Let's start with one of the most well-known.

1- The Safin file

Dunlop made a contract with Safin in 2002 (i guess) and they painted a Head PC600 like a Dunlop racquet, CAPS and everything...

The most extreme instance that comes to mind was the short lived contract between Marat Safin and Dunlop. At the time, Dunlop released the Muscle Weave 200G 90, which was never released in the US, to make it appear that Safin had switched. It turns out that Safin never made the switch from his Head racquet though, and after having the Dunlop logo stencil put on the string, Head actually filed a lawsuit against Dunlop.

Here’s an interesting frame that Martina Navratilova used in 1987 for a short time. She was under contract with Yonex (R-22 was the current paint scheme) but wanted to use the Dunlop Max200G which her rival Steffi Graf was having great success with. You can clearly see the head shape difference between what is under the paint and the Yonex that was being marketed. She actually won Wimbledon with this frame and then switched off early in 1988.

2- The Nadal file

The cortex in Rafael Nadal APDC was painted, that's because he has always used the APD, black non-cortex version.
Also babolat claimed he used Pro Hurricane Tour strings before he used RPM Blast, while in fact he was using Babolat Duralast, a cheaper and old monopoly string. They printed Pro Hurricane Tour on the Duralast string and delivered it in Pro Hurricane Tour labeled reels.

So? Its like that in every single sport,

Do you really think lebron uses shoes you can buy off the shelves?
Do you think messi uses football boots you can buy off the shelf?
Do you think lance armstrong used a trek bike that you could buy in any bike shop?

This stuff was happening back in the 70's and most likely earlier, for example in cycling, the cyclist would choose a bike he wanted then get it painted into the team/sponsor colors.. and i know for a fact that happened.. 43 years ago

There not intentionally trying to mislead anyone, they just want to provide their best athletes with whatever they want as they are the most powerful marketing tool for their company

I guess we all know that, i'm just documenting the stuff man...

Jack Kramer used a Wilson Don Budge model painted to look like a Jack Kramer.
Rod Laver used a Dunlop painted to look like a Chemold.
As Sherlock Holmes said "There is nothing new under the sun."

I have a reel of this string... Thought it was horrible. But Nadal kicked ass with this string which means I can't complain about what kind of strings I use.

As someone whose heard bits and pieces of these stories, I appreciate you taking the time to describe and illustrate the stories. I didn't get the sense that you were trying to stir things up or imply malfeasance and I hope you'll continue to post more.

Basketball is very different. Unless you're Lebron, Kobe, KD and other stars- most NBA players wear what you buy off the shelves. Only difference between Lebron/Kobe/KDs shoe and retail is that theirs are fitted more to the feet.

No, you are not quite right. It was actually 2001, and Dunlop made a racket for Safin (basically copied his Head Prestige600), and he did use it an Queens Club in the Summer of 2001, and maybe Wimbledon as well. He actually used an uncapped version, look up some photos on Getty!

He didn't like this Dunlop version, and then yes Dunlop painted his Head rackets it seems, and he went back to these Prestiges paintjobbed, as you say.

I've got one of his Dunlop's, I will bump the thread for you right now, so you can see the photos:)

The Gasquet, Lu and Azarenka file.

These three players use, or used (Azarenka before Wilson), a Head Instinct Tour XL paintjob'd as Head Extreme models:

First of all just because something has been happening for a long time doesn't make it any more right. And it also doesn't mean that it's not worth bringing up from time to time to remind people who may not be as aware of it.

Secondly, and more importantly, yes these companies are obviously intentionally trying to mislead millions of people. I don't see how you could possibly argue any differently. They wouldn't bother doing it if it weren't a successful and profitable strategy. If you show your average tennis fan that photo of Safin and ask them, "what kind of racket is Safin using here?," I guarantee you that at least 9 out of 10 of them would answer, "Dunlop." This obviously goes a long way in improving Dunlop's image and bottom line.

I'm all for supplying athletes with the best gear, but I just think it's sleazy to trick people into believing they can buy the same thing. I'm sorry, but this is obviously misleading: http://www.head.com/tennis/products/racquets/tour-extreme/?region=us

I know that this is just marketing as usual, and this is how things work in the cold cruel world, and that's right, but to say that it isn't misleading, or as I prefer to call it, lying, is simply incorrect.

Yen-Hsun Lu... I was a ball boy in Delray for him and the ridges were obvious... It was an Extreme PJ, but it looked like some Asian edition or Euro edition... It had what looked like a printed on signature in red??? But it also looked like a YT IG Extreme. With the mixed colors near the throat, but not the microgel.

Very true, i was just referring to the top players

I do agree with you, but if they were to sell the rackets the pro's actually use to the public i'm not even sure they would break even

There is far worse lying going on within governments etc.. so i think when you compare what tennis companies are doing to what governments are...

It's fine by me :) I feel good that i now know where to buy these custom rackets because of this forum

I'd have thought Steffi Graf using the Max 200G painted like the white Wilson was one of the most obvious PJs of all time.

Sorry, But that never happened! What she did use was the Pro Staff Classic 6.1 85 18x20 that was a Pro Room only frame with her time with Wilson.

Wilson has made a exact copy of the LM Instinct without the ridges for Azaranka.

I think this was after retirement but I remember seeing Patrick Rafter playing his Prince racquets pj'd to look like Dunlops.

Not sure if that's the case now.

Great thread OP.

Just thought add my 2p. I have it on pretty good authority that Dunlop didn't paint Safin's prestige's like the 200g. They thought he was still using the (identical) copies they had made for him. One of which I have and it is indeed like a PT10. Safin himself gave his current batch of prestige's to **** and asked them to do the pj. The first Dunlop heard of it was when they saw him play next!
