Yeah, shame it's only a matter of time before Lewandowski is next.

On the Chelsea front, signing Schwarzer has restored a bit of faith. Maybe the club do know what they're doing afterall! Him backing up Cech for a year or two before Courtois comes to challenge for the starting spot is some great business.

Disappointed about David Villa/Spurs not coming off with him electing to remain in Spain. Thought he could have fulfilled a similar role to Rafael VdV for us, i.e. top class player bought for comparatively little and providing a few seasons worth of real quality. Okay, we've got Paulinho, but, thus far it's the usual tortuous transfer window for us with zillions of players being linked, some being very actively chased (Villa a case in point) and us in dire need of around 5 or 6 players.

How's everybody else feeling re their teams transfer dealings (or lack thereof)?

Hey Ross,

Do you think we'll lose him?

Let's cross our fingers on that. Hard to imagine anyone wanting to buy him, mind you, casting your mind back, we actually managed to sell Jenas, which is a miracle in my book. :) So with Ade, I'd expect Huddlestone to go (Sunderland possibly), Parker, Assou-Ekkoto, and who knows who else (maybe heading to Villa as part of a Benteke deal).

It's who we bring in that's the intriguing - and frustrating - part.

Seems everything has gone quiet on the Arsenal transfer front. Perhaps understandable in light of the team and Wenger disappearing off on the Asian tour, but a bit disappointing all the same.

Real seem keen to radiate the impression that they intend to keep Higuain unless they receive an outrageous bid for him. I think the whole Suarez thing is misguided, although I doubt our interest is genuine. Even Julio Cesar seems bound for elsewhere (as I've said before, I'm quite happy to persevere with Szczesny, though we still need one more keeper).

I just hope we don't end up making desperate bids on deadline day having had another rocky opening to the season, with everyone knowing we have money to spend and needs to fill. Anyway, it's supposed to be a huge buyers' market this summer, with so many clubs / leagues in financial turmoil.

You can only hope so :)

Get Benteke instead, it's the move he wants and the fit seems right.

I like Ade. His style and his skill are incredible. I loved watching him even when he was with Arsenal. Shame he only shows his greatness a portion of the time. Despite my fondness of him, if Benteke helps us back into Champions League, I'm all for him.

Let's just beg to differ on Ade... In other Spurs players exiting news, looks like Dempsey could well be getting sold.

On to other stuff, I note that Pellegrini has been asserting he'll win trophies and finish above Man Utd and such like. Hmm... Must say I'll be following him/City with great curiosity next season.

Aspas looked great today. 1 goal & 1 assist. Alberto play well too. Kolo was solid. Minoglet had a quiet game. BR said he now going for bigger names to sign (Eriksen, Yilmaz, Bernard & Alderwideld to name a few). Now all we need is CONSISTENCY. Top 4 is a must. YNWA.

Now City are buying Jovetic for nearly £30 Million? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, i've always thought of him as a poor mans Aguero.

Would be like Chelsea buying Gerrard, when you've already got the better version already in Lampard, what's the point?

New City mantra seems to be:

1) Buy new team, win trophies
2) If new team doesn't win, replace team
3) Rinse + repeat

Doesn't matter if they already have better versions of the players they're signing.

Looks like it.

They will probably be there or there abouts again, but for some reason i'm more worried about Spurs and Arsenal. They seem to be going in the right direction.

Well, we have some outstanding players - Lloris, Vertonghen, Bale obviously. Paulinho's come in, which is superb. But I don't think we have a ton of money with which to buy the 3 players minimum I believe we badly need to bolster us. And it's bloody difficult... Benteke had a massive season for Villa scoring a lot of goals - but that's one season, and there have been so many "one season wonders" that to many (inc. Levy no doubt) £25 million is simply over the odds for what would still be a slight risk. And I would say something similar re another player we're heavily linked with - Soldado... £20-25 million for a player in his late 20's?... Then there's the fact we're not in the CL, nor pay the mega-bucks a la Citeh or Chelski, and, yep... Anyhow, I'm looking for Baldini (who's of course on a paid wage) to actually show his mettle and help bring in players - and exciting young talent as well, but whether or not this will happen is another qsn.

RE Arsenal, they have a different issue in as much as they appear to have loads of the readies, but there's so much brinksmanship and double-dealings going on... Suarez (surely he wants to go to Madrid?... and isn't this just a ploy to persuade the dithering Higuain to finally sign?)... Rooney (would he in fact prefer Chelsea?)... I don't know but I sense this is possibly a make or break season for Wenger, so they definitely do need to make some acquisitions.

You mention Rooney. Who knows how that one's going to turn out. Moyes seems like he will refuse to sell him to anyone. Why would he want to keep him? He's not been that great the last two years, he keeps asking to leave, his heart isn't in it etc..

Not sure why Moyes would want a player like that around when he's trying to stamp his mark on what's already pretty much the toughest job in replacing Ferguson.

Fingers crossed he manages to keep him at Man Utd though, as it does seem he fancies a move to Chelsea, with Mourinho being keen on it too. For me, i'm hoping he doesn't arrive.

I reckon we'll know by Thursday or so if Benteke is going to Spurs. I want this to go through now, so fingers crossed he doesn't get away from us like David Villa did...

Rooney to Arsenal?... Higuain?... the one I actually most fear is Fellaini. Reckon he could do a great job at the Emirates, so fingers crossed again - that he WON'T end up at Arsenal!

Fabregas to Utd?... hmm, doubtful maybe. As is (surely?) Drogba to Chelsea? Isn't he 35?!...

Rooney has been unsettled at United since his injury in that Champions League tie with Bayern Munich. It is difficult not to see a move as best for player and club. And United aren't short of forwards who can score goals so there may be no need to spend on a replacement.

Agreed. For me it started before that, back in 2010 was it? When he questioned United's ambition and demanded a crazy wage rise, which he got. The fans seem to be against him, they boo him etc.. He wants out as quickly as possible. Doesn't seem like it makes sense to keep him.

It did bring a smile when Moyes gave that interview where he said he needs Rooney if van Persie gets injured. Ferguson was such a master of things when it came to the media, to see Moyes messing up so early on is a bad sign. Contrast that with how brilliant and charming Mourinho has been so far.

What is going on Fena?! Chelsea reported to be offering 10M plus Luiz or Mata for Rooney?! If this is even half bonafide, I'm staggered. Such exceptional players - I'd love them at WHL.

IMO Moyes has got off to a poor start with all this Rooney business and his press pronouncements.

I'm pretty sure it's not real. Barcelona, Madrid and Bayern were willing to pay £35-40 million for both players. Chelsea said that wasn't enough and they weren't for sale. Now they value them at £15 million? Haha. If Chelsea had offered that Man Utd would of snapped their hand off. Its only the Daily Mail who have reported it anyway, the others have been quoting that one source.

Chelsea also said they wouldn't bid until Rooney submitted a transfer request, which he hasn't.

So, 60 mill for Bale to Utd, he'd be a fool to move there.

I'd rather hold out for Real or Jose led Chelsea- they have proven coaches there. No thanks to Man Utd lite with Moyes in charge who's nationality is probably the main reason he got the job ;)

Negredo and a poor mans Aguero? Not scared.

Oh and stupid money for Fernandinho. Chelsea might not of spent big, but look at the players we will have coming in over the next year or two. De Bruyne, Kalas, van Ginkel, Lukaku, Courtois, Wallace etc..

Sounds alot better than spending crazy money on average players approaching their late 20's.

So for those La Liga regular watchers, how does Soldado rank among the Negredo's, Aguero's, Higuain's etc of Spanish football? What kind of player is he exactly aside from one who scores goals of course (which we badly need at WHL)?

Loving the Schurrle interview in todays papers.

He did not worry about the competition, which could yet limit his first team appearances in a year when he must fight for his place in a very talented Germany squad ahead of the World Cup.

'That's not in my thoughts, it's not what I think about,' Schurrle added.

'I know my qualities. I know what I can do. I want to play, of course, everyone wants to play, but there are so many matches that everyone will play.

So many players refuse moves because they worry about their international places. Play for a big club, step out your comfort zone and improve as a player. His attitude sounds spot on, surely an international manager will be loving a player speaking like that over sticking with a mid table side because they're scared to fail.

I don't want Rooney. He comes with plenty of baggage and is starting to get up there in years. Plus he mopes when he's forced to play on the wing or as a supporting striker. Ironically, he's at his best while playing as a supporting striker or as an attacking midfielder.

Yeah i'm hoping we don't get him either, Lukaku, Ba and Torres should be better than what we had last season. For me it's just about holding on to Mata and Luiz and it will of been a good window.

Will be interesting to see if we can keep hold of Traore, he's been flat out incredible. The best player during pre season by a mile. He's only 17, but being from Burkina Faso it's tough for him to work here. Looks like he could end up having to go to France, which would be a shame. He looks to be as good, if not better, technically than Mata, Hazard and Oscar. Crazy for such a young kid. Mourinho is in love with him, he decided to take him on tour after watching him on video for 5 minutes.

Spurs turn down 100 million euro bid for Bale. Who is stupider in this case, Madrid for offering it, or Spurs for turning it down?

Can't be doing with either of them. Madrid just go for the player being hyped at the time (Bale, Isco etc..). Whilst Spurs have no idea what that kind of money can do for them.

People are talking about Napoli being title challengers after they sold their best player for almost half of what Spurs can get for Bale. They've got Rafael, Albiol, Callejon, Radosevic, Mertens, Higuain with the Cavani money. They're twice the team they were last season. Look at Fiorentina, they sell Jovetic and get Gomez, Ilicic, Joaquin and Ambrosini.

Spurs are either too stubborn, or have so little faith in AVB and their scouting to build a team with £80 Million.

NickC

Professional
Spurs will finish top 2 if they take the money and spend it wisely. It could be the right push to cement themselves as a Champions League club.

Levy doesn't realize that Bale isn't worth 50 million, much less 100. If offered the biggest deal in history, you take it. You could get 3-4 top, top players and make a serious push at the Premier League and probably take the Europa League in the process.

PureAlph4

I'm probably looking at things from the perspective of a penny pinching Gooner, but when I hear that Spurs can get £80m for a single player (who could break his leg tomorrow and never play again) while in the process of trying to finance a new stadium, I just think of how many years of austerity that money could avoid the team having to suffer in the future.

Arsenal pretty much are just now emerging from 11 - 12 years of having the ability to spend on the squad being limited by investment in building a new stadium (total cost £500m) for the next century.

Obviously the counter-argument is that spending £80m on improving the squad could lead to them challenging for the title, and competing for the CL, in which case their net financial position could end up being stronger by spending all the money and making the club more successful on the pitch.

-------------

On the Arsenal front, of course no change in the proscrastination over transfer dealings, with the usual number of 'deals' falling through at the last second as we haggle over a few hundred k here and there.

The worrying thing is that all attention is on Suarez / signing a new goal scorer, whereas there seems to be no noise at all surrounding the fact that the squad, and particularly the defence, are light going into the start of the season.

We've let 6 or 7 players go this summer (i.e a lot of the moronic, big money contracts Wenger handed out to sick notes / dross are starting to expire), with no new signings bar the free transfer of Yaya Sanogo (yes, who?) from Auxerre. The clear problem is that we only have 7 defenders (3 CBs), of whom Vermaelen (long-term back problems) and Monreal will miss the start of the season, and Koscielny has been struggling with his ankle.

And Wenger now seems to be pre-conditioning the supporters for the prospect of no significant transfer dealings this summer (despite every executive at the club shouting to the hills for the last 6 months about £70m they can't wait to hand over to the first interested punter with anything of any value to hand over), having started talking of how the current squad is strong enough to challenge for the title without any reinforcements!

Nothing would be worse than Wenger panic buying again on deadline day, but not actually bringing in any quality players would be pretty pathetic as well. I'm just hoping it won't be getting taught a lesson in the CL qualifying round that forces his hand.

Surprised we didn't pick up Williams from Swansea or Capoue from France. We need some midfield and center half steel.

I think 40 is too much for Suarez but would rather have him then Higuian for 35. I guess Napoli used their stupid money proceeds from Cavani and that messes up prices for everyone.

I'm more excited about the sidelines this new year with Moyes, Pellegrini and Jose in action. Hope he has Chelsea looking like Real did last year from a neutral standpoint.

Real looked sharp against PSG yesterday. Lavezzi was poor.

Absolutely, couldn't agree more. This is the deal that could make them Champions League regulars, not just once every 3 or 4 years. English football is at a strange point with Ferguson leaving, now is the opportunity for Spurs to put themselves up in the big league. Levy seems to be scared of putting his big boy pants on, growing some balls and pulling the trigger.

Spurs with nothing but Bale? Top 5. Spurs without Bale but strength in every position? Top 2.

The problem with the situation referred to above is the precise truth hasn't been properly established and has been totally muddied by the Marca paper, the Daily Mail, and just the press creating a self-replenishing feeding frenzy...

Have RM actually put in an offer???

Why is it assumed Levy would turn down a very big bid? I'm not so sure he would turn down a REAL offer of 60M upwards...

It does indeed seem Bale wants to go - judging by AVB's now tetchy and uncertain comments on the matter... but where is this concrete offer?

If a massive bid was made though, I'm with most on this... take the money and reinvest cleverly. We've already got Paulinho, Chadli and Soldado is very nearly done. With Bale money we could get another approx 2 or 3 absolute top class players.

talkSPORT interviewing David Pleat live on air – just a few minutes ago – have revealed that he believes that Tottenham have not actually received a formal bid, in writing for Gareth Bale.

Pleat a former Spurs manager, now Tottenham’s Director of Football at White Hart Lane expressed the view that the media storm in relation to Bale was largely media born as well as media driven.

The Real Madrid friendly outlet Marca have excelled themselves this week by actually rehashing Luka Modric’s quotes from the time his head was turned/he went on strike prior to joining Los Blancos.

Pleat has been criticised in the past for his ‘spoken word’ (think Chimbomba, for example), but listening to him this afternoon was refreshing. Not just because he said what many Spurs fans might wish to hear, but because he spoke calmly and from an informed perspective.

This last week has been an appalling example of how thoughtless and perhaps corrupt the conventional press can be. Despite the obvious flaws in the Marca tales, this story has reached a boiling point whereby most if not all British newspapers are happy to run a story based upon nothing.

Tottenham are appear to be under the gun. Has anyone bothered to check if it is loaded?

Agreed about the offer. The press seem to be getting worse with it these days, the Luiz or Mata + £10 Million for Rooney as an example. Totally untrue.

Now they're saying Luiz will go for £40 Million, to Bayern Munich, who have so much depth at centre back already. Mourinho said he isn't for sale, we know he loves a centre back who can play (he's taken Carvalho with him everywhere).

Paying 100 million for Bale is idiotic, Tottenham are pushing probably because they know rma will raise their bid, for such a sum they should be idiots not to give him away with no regrets, they could easily fit Coentrao and Di Maria in this deal.
