My 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 match....
First set, I sucked, he sucked more.
Second set, he raised his level of play, I hit at least 20 forehand winner attempts out by 6'.
Third set, those forehand went IN, few winners, he sucked.

LeeD - it would be interesting to know how many of these past acquaintances / opponents / hitting partners you recall in your frequently regurgitated anecdotes actually remember YOU by name.

Obviously it won't be an issue for a sidekick like RalieghZalameda, but could BillSmall really identify with a DomondLee in 2013? What do you think?

I already mentioned, Bill is a perenial B player, a pusher, and one of the tournament referrees or organizers.
He might remember my name for entering A/Open tourneys. I never played a B tourney, choosing to go from C directly to A/Open.
GregShepard would remember me, having practiced a few times, he one of the A's talking to me when I was a C player.
ArtLarsen of course, but I think he's gone by now.
All the Louie clan.
Gil Howard for sure, as he had me practicing serves with his sons Mike and Kevin at his courts on Pine/Scott St.
ByronNepomechino, not one of my hitting partners, but he'd remember.
MikeGee for sure.
His older bro, fresh out of Annapolis ,was my doubles partner for one Chinese National.
BobMurio, son of John who owned the bar in Haight, hit with me, I filled in for TomBrown.
Talking GoldenGatePark, right? In the late '70's.

My regular practice partner at the time was DexterLee. He won a couple of ChineseNationals in the early '80's. When I was his sidekick, he was No.2 for CCSF, and later the same for StateCollege. He became a garderner at USSF Med Center, and quit tennis.

Thought you partnered Raliegh in doubles for like 15 years? Or was Raliegh just a partner for competitive doubles, whereas DexterLee was your hitting partner?

What about RichWilliams?

Oh - and hasn't GilHoward's facility on Washington St closed down?

Anyway - nice to know some people remember others. I can't remember the names of the players I've played every single season for several years in league matches.

1. I quit tennis after 1979, for motocross.
2. Both Raleigh and Dexter were hitting and doubles partners, at different events.
3. Rich was a top B lefty, not really an A, but he practiced with A's in GGPark. We played fun doubles against each other, and hit a few times when I was hanging with Dexter. D could beat Rich most times.
4. Gil's two tennis courts were on PINE St. and Scott. It was in the middle of a girl's Catholic junior high school, middle of the block, not seen from the streets. Mike got beaten by every lefty, so Gil had me serve to both him and Kevin. My serves worked really well vs Gil, who was a middlin A player with a huge high bouncing first flat serve.
Remember TracyHouk? I hit with her a bit, but mainly served to her, around the end of my tennis years. I think she got to be a decent woman's A level player later in the early '80's.
Remember GeorgePonticoff? Homeless bud of mine, cigarette in one hand, beer in the other, playing tennis with the Larsen gang on court 14 mostly.
How about the annoying BillShine, court 1 hog, a lowest level C player.

Did you work at Wise surf shop in 70s, or was it just Veterans / DeSoto for pocket money?

70s....

Doc Renneker was here (UCSF Sch Med 76), and he and some of his med school buddies still live on the great highway

Bill Hickey moved to his Great Highway house from Pedro in 72 or 73, evicted in 2004 after over 30 years of rent control.

Wise surf shop, Domond Lee shaping, PeeWee glassing. George Orbelian worked there in the 70s before writing Essential Surfing. Bob himself shaped until about 73. Original Wise shapes are still seen from time to time.

Kdalle moved here in 76. Locals still resent him. ;)

Jim Holt appeared in National Geographic surfing at FORT POINT, its a cool picture, taken in the 70s.

The movie "City Slickers" came out in 72 or 73, a San Francisco surf movie starring the locals, but especially standout Steve Pfeiffer who later got married had kids and thereafter wasn't seen at the beach much.

And, actually, a surprising number of others. Many of the peeps in my age range were here but not surfing until the 80s.

This is just too good. Is there even a scenario he gave us to help visualize his match play? LeeD I would love to play you since you attract these "young hotties"

Here's what someone wrote 10 years ago online. pretty sure he is not a fake

The Double Overhead Association could only be started by a loudmouth in your face charging surfer. That surfer was Domond Lee, one of Bob's early shapers when Wise still made their own boards, up to the early 70s. Domond started, and controlled, the board for years - it had to pass his scrutiny. Of course you tranny wouldn't know the real story. With respect to SF Surfshop...Bob has crushed every surfshop competitor in town since the late 60s. SF Surfshop has been running 11 years and still going strong, and that grates at Bob like nobody's business. He hasn't figured out that they offer custom shaping and he does not. Profits from that are not the same, but Bob cannot compete unless he breaks out the planer again, and that ain't gonna happen. He could have 50000 boards on the racks, and people will still wanna go talk to the shaper... The middle avenues are the soul of surfing San Francisco. But they own the other point, not the Fort. And the avenues...many of SF's best surfers live on the highway in the Avenues for obvious reasons...matter of fact Bob lives there too...he used to surf once too...and the middle avenue daryls charge the beach harder than anyone. I have full respect for Bob, he runs a good show, a tight business...but he the local surf scene for him starts and stops at his store's front door, and he is missing a LOT. There is not a lot of surfing soul at WISE, but there is a tight business unit.

7th grade and high school.

Does not compute.

we are allowed to play for our zoned high school starting in 7th grade. Which is why you see a lot of middle school starters. One of the best teams in the state trotted out a lineup where 4 out of the 5 singles players were 8th graders.

Nat Young is a legend.
Corky Carroll.
In SantaCruz, Roger Adams, JoeyThomas.
I was just a surfer who ducked work to surf.
Yes, couple of stints at Wises. First started hanging there on WawonaSt. shop around '66.
He moved to Vicente and 43rd, I worked there on and off, shaping on and off in the mid '70's.
I actually sold quite a bit of windsurfing gear thru that shop in '83-'85, but I moved to SanRafael and worked at SausalitoSailboards.
What is a legend? BillHickey knows me, as do every single good big wave surfer in SanFrancisco in year's '67 thru '85.
Yes, I"m in NaturalArt, the surf movie, 3 big VFW lefts, maybe 11' really, in the tube for over 5 seconds each.
Yes, I'm mentioned in KevinStarr's article that made NewYorker, and the first blue Mavericks book.
No, I don't care, I'm just a surfer who surfed so he could duck out of work.

At first it wasn't obvious you won the match, but rather by distractions from the sidelines. So once you WON, it apparent the hotties kicked the ol' duffs off the court? BTW, did you show them how to bang the back fence on a single bounce on service like you used to? they would love that! I cannot even come close to that feat, too short.

For sure, ask them, although Mike would remember better, as Kevin was maybe 15 at the time. The Asian lefty Dad brought over to the private courts, summer of '78.
