Hey guys... I'm kind of new to this whole tennis thing but can anyone recommend a good 18x20 frame around 12oz with a balance around 9pts. HL?

Welcome back.

Yoko, AKA the Tec 315 18x20 is exactly that. It has stolen my heart. I use the 16 mains version and also have an 18 in 1/4 that I decided to sell. I have too many racquets Im not using.

The banana yellow one was sick...then they went to the ed hardy graphic one which was too stiff...the new one is supposed to be even better, it has volkl style grommets. Really good return racquet. the beam/headshape is an adjustment, but awesome racquet.

On the new one - well the light one is too light, but it's a party in your pants to hit with - has that laughable power. But the feel is far better than the older stiffer feeling ones. It's funny to read the GOAT review of this thing on the site.

*enters bar, sweating, looking nervous* So, uh, what does a guy have to do to get a demo around here?

So, the BLX Blade Team is sublime when the competition is right at or below my level, makes my all court game as solid as my baseline game - midcourt volleys, overheads from the baseline, touch shots - never been so comfortable with these.

But, when playing someone a little better than me I really miss my old Babolat forehand, all the crazy running passing shots, as well as some heat on my serve. I've been playing a 5.0ish guy every week and often push him to 3 sets with the Blade but by the end have no heat left on my FH or serve. Twice out of utter frustration, I pulled out the old APDC+ for a set, having not touched it for months, and won those two sets more convincingly than any other sets I've won, just by having much more firepower on the FH. But, both times, my neck hurt by the end of the set. :0

So, I have a box o demos that are supposed to be arm friendly versions of Babs: Volkl VI MP and VI Classic, Donnay Formula 100. Sigh.

Bottoms up!

Man if you would've added the Solinco protocol 300 to that demo box you could have scratched an itch for many in here. Good luck with your incoming pledges!

I've always been intrigued by Teci frames. Alas they no longer make an 18x20 IIRC.

I've decided that I'm going to return to the game in a completely non-competitive manner. I love competing but I love enjoying the game more. No more spec obsessing, no more endless string testing or tension adjusting. I'm just thinking a classic frame with full gut.

I'll probably end up back with my usual suspects: the Prestiges, the 6.1 95s and perhaps the occasional dalliance with a Black Ace.

I'm really just going to with it.

Didn't know about that one but if it doesn't say "comfort" at least three times in the product description I'm out!

So I hit with V1 MP, played a few sets. Def. needed lead in the head right off the bat, played for a while with 3/9 but ended up preferring just some at 12 to get the right power level/trajectory (when i tried 3/9 AND 12 everything was sailing long). Played well, very few errors, good dip on short angles and wide serves, no flyers or surprises off the bed, easy placement, but still felt a little anemic, not as much pop as I was expecting. At the very end of the third set I pulled out my BLX Blade Team and wow, it felt like a sledgehammer hitting the ball. Now the BLX is weighted up to ~335g but still, the difference was surprisingly huge.

The V1 just felt very light in the plow department but if I were to add a bunch of lead to the head I'd be hitting the fence. It was surprisingly comfortable though -usually lightweight/low plow is the worst for me comfort-wise - but this was probably even more comfy than my leaded up Team. I may try some lead in the throat to beef it up without adding too much power but my first instinct is it won't work for me. Jack, I can see why you like it though, effortless control like the Team with a little extra spin.

After the three sets I pulled out the Classic V1 (no lead) and played two more games. Much more solid feeling than the V1 MP but a notch less whippy, probably both a result of a higher SW. This one felt like more of a possibility for me, just much more heft on the ball on all shots and more pop too. Only played two games but I'll give it a try tomorrow against the 5.0.

I did pull out the Formula 100 during warmup, sprayed 5 or 6 balls in various directions and then put it down. I'll try it another time fresh but first impression was horrible, could not find a sweet spot on it and could barely put the ball in play. Bizarre!

Didn't some of you guys use the Head Extreme Pro? I remember thinking it looked like a lollipop, but a hitting partner of mine has a newer one in the lighter form and it is nice. I found the pro doing some spec lookups - my Yoko is at the same specs as it is.

I was using the EP2.0 prior to switching to the Tecnifibres.

I loved it. Just like the 320 and then 315 a little better.

Now that you mention it, I think my 315 is pretty close to what my Extremes were as well. Little more HL balance and a little lower SW, but not drastically different in how they feel to just pick up and swing.

The Extreme is a sweet stick in my opinion...many are turned off by the frame shape, but it never bothered me. Just like the Tecs, many complain of a "pingy" sound. Again, doesn't bother me.

I might get a 325 though, then there's Yoko...it's not easy boys. By the way the solinco looks and feel like crap in the hand. It might play good but the fit and finish is a fail.

IMO, despite the love some have for it, Formula 100 was one of the worst frames I ever hit. Organix V1 felt flimsy to me. The Quantum, Catapult and DNX MP versions of the V1 hit the mark of a lighter, whippier version of the Classic while maintaining decent plow. The PB V1, however, was a fail and the Organix version to me even worse. It sounds like you got one of the heavier versions of the recent Classic (I have seen them vary from 10.3 to 10.8 strung in the 2010 and 2013 cosmetic), I always end up back with it after a bender.

It is a pretty easy transition from the Extreme to the 320, IMO.

And, I agree. I think the 320 has an excellent feel. I just like the 315 better. I don't find the 315 and 320 to be drastically different in terms of performance. The 320 is probably a little better pure baselining racquet, but the 315 is superior in every other aspect for me...serves, volleys, feel, etc. Again, the differences aren't drastic - the 315 is still an excellent baseline racquet. The 320 is a little spinnier, but you can generate spin with the 315. It primarily came down to the plush feel of the 315 for me.

I can play with either racquet and transition between them with relative ease.

This Classic is 10.6 strung. Started out with it today against the 5.0, felt very good in warm up, super solid and easy, but definitely plays stiffer than the Organix and by the 3rd game my neck was hurting and I put it down. Picked up the Organix, much more comfortable, neck felt fine for the rest of the day. Still lacked any kind of put away power/plow for me but due to the lightness and control I was able to just hang around before finally losing 11-9 in a third set tiebreaker, which is the closest I've coming to beating this guy. I actually had 3 or 4 match points in the breaker but with no put away power there wasn't really anything I could do to close it out.

I think the biggest upside was just that, due to the low weight, I could keep making mostly first serves late in the match - my arm/shoulder didn't tire. I'm not crazy about the feel, kind of indistinct, and I haven't dialed in my backhand - I think I hit my BH better with a flexier response. But strangely, I had my best result in probably 15 matches with this guy. Hmmm.

I suppose I will add more weight at 12 and maybe cut out the Volkl powerfibre II strings and do my usual syn gut at 50lbs, see if that gives me enough power. BTW, this stick is 4HL instead of the 2HL that TW, maybe that's why it feels so anemic. As if demoing didn't have enough variables already!!

Q. Anyone else a fan of/have any thoughts on the the K Blade 98?

Just not sure if yesterday was some kind of racketaholic delusional episode (of which I've experienced many times in the past), or if indeed it's actually like the Blade 98 that has the most h/light balance and lowest SW out of the K/gold and black/ Black Blade 98...

And take note Wilson!... the graphics on the top of K's hoop are so seriously nice, why didn't you carry it on with something similar on the later Blades?!

Ross,

If I may offer a rare contribution here, I did hit the K-Blade 98 for a year, and several of my opponents claimed that it was the best frame that I had ever hit for my game----to that point, admittedly. I went through a stretch of hitting it in really cool temperatures for 3-4 hours at a time with full poly (Klip Optic Nerve and Alu Power, if memory serves), and it started bugging my arm, so I switched, perhaps prematurely, but I never looked back. Looking back:) the plow and stability of the frame belied its specs, and bite on the ball was pretty special. I think, to be honest, that I had it modded wrong (4g at 3/9, with a minimal counter), but I think at the end of the day, it was just slightly "wrong" for me. And don't press me on that because I really can't express why, but a different setup could have made the difference.

Nonetheless, if you're liking the K-Blade you might want to try my current frame of choice, the V-1 Pro. They play similarly and share many characteristics, but the Volkl's swing weight is a little less and it is much more comfortable, imo.

Nice one, Pneumated. I've far too little time on the K to form a rounded opinion but that's very interesting and chimes with how I thought of it. Have also taken note of your frame rec - V1 Pro... similar to K but more comfy would appeal to me.

Loved the KBlade 98. Just really unstable at net but great from the back and on serve. Still see some of the cleanest hitting rec players bashing with it these days. And Milos.

It's good to be back Ross. It's really my school's tennis team that is to blame in this. I know some of the players and some of them are aides in my office. Then I started talking to the coaches. Then it was just the sound of the game being played. And well, you know.

Now it's time to get my hands on a Prestige MP and a 6.1 95 18x20.

Okay, will look out for instability at net. What was quickly apparent was, in regard to other Blade 98s, though the comfort was a bit off, I liked the balance and weighting a bit more. I felt I got into a very nice rhythm and was timing hitting the ball nice and fluid, hitting clean and better feeling, more connected. Solid, like all of them. Also, excelled at lobs, and the precision and angles and flatter power is very interesting. TBH it's got me seriously reconsidering my years long stance on string pattern. I'm definitely favouring more closed pattern performance these days, just not sure if I want to go the whole hog and embrace 18/20.

All that said, Pneumated1's post above though has made me scurry off and check out the V1Pro thread.:)

For all holics everywhere, I will demo the mythical Head Extreme pro this week and compare it to my lover, Yoko.

I looked up the vibration frequency chart, which is a great way to determine true stiffness and it looks like this thing will not peel my arm off at least for a week.

Decided to pass on the Solinco experience..too much work to mod and track down. Yoko just needs lead at 12 for me and it's good, and the EP is good out of the gate. I saw Chicago Jack's cool post on silicone insertion and instantly knew I was not going to be on that level of mod fathership.

How would that happen? In case you missed it, I have had 2 Blades, a Dunlop 200 and an 18x20 Yoko in my bag for the past 6 months. I'm good man, I just feel like test driving a tweener. I want to gauge the power levels of yoko compared to a boomstick and possibly add some lead to her. If lI really like the EP, Ill grab one to have in the bag. Like I said, they are out of Yokos at my shop and I need something similar.

I think the 315 is still more maneuverable, even when leaded to similar specs as the Extreme.

Yes, I can whip the 315 real easily. Maybe too easily really. I am debating to add more lead to it so I want to see how I handle the power of the EP. My strokes are pretty dialed in and I have been hitting with a lot of spin using Yoko.

With the 18x20 patterns, my strokes were more level and less low to high. Really enjoyed that phase of tennis, but the results I have gotten with the Tec's open pattern are tough to ignore. It also feels more natural to me and my net clearance is safer.

The real test is serve. The Tec is truly a magnificent racquet on serve.

16 main 315 is a really nice stick. fully agree that adding lead at 12 is the ticket to nirvana with this stick. mine stock came in at an obese weight of 11.85 oz strung w/ 16g poly. i call this one obese because i have a 2nd one that tips the scales at 11.6 oz strung w/ 16g poly. i originally put lead at 3 and 9 and in the throat and the thing felt blobby. i finally decided to remove all the lead and apply 1.5g at 12. wow! what a difference this made. no more blobbiness. great on serves, too. :)

Yep, I just keep adding lead at 12 and it works well. I want to check the balance against the EP when I get home. I lose guage of power after a while without a reference point. I do feel like my Blades have a little more power to them, so I am interested in how big the Head hits.

My GOAT play was when I had the Wilson 6.1 16x18. I could push people back so far behind the baseline, and then drop shot them, but that stick was pretty heavy and stiff.

Yoko is hitting a rather big ball, but Im going to put that in perspective tonight.

Interested to hear how you get on. Never played the 2.0 version but have previously investigated other earlier versions. I found these to be a little clubby and stiff and more hefty than imagined. Topspin booming groundstrokes were pretty impressive though. Anyhow, I believe the 2.0 is indeed a bit different. That said, I'd imagine it to be pretty unlike the TF 315 Ltd, so, yes, keep us posted.

They probably aren't as different as one would think initially, but they are most certainly different. The Extreme provides easier access to spin and easier power. It is a better pure baseline rally stick and has much better directional control than one might expect. The 16x19 pattern is actually pretty dense in the middle of the stringbed. And it feels and plays softer than its stiffness rating would suggest.

That said, the 315 still feels better and provides better control. It is far superior on serves ( for me at least). And it is more maneuverable.

For me, the feel and the serve were the decisive factors.

This comparison applies to my 315 that is leaded up to be very similar to the Extreme in stock form. The stock 315 is drastically different. I still hold the Extreme in high regard. I just found something I liked better.

Well the Extreme is a nice stick. It definitely is rather comfortable for it's rating, but I can still feel the stiffness a little. Still has a nice feel. Mine weighed 336 and honestly played too light for me. I have gotten a lot stronger over the past 2 months and I am enjoying the 12 ounce plow a lot.

I picked up Yoko again and was instantly better. It is so solid and the way mine is setup (343, 5pts HL) it hits a heavier ball than the Extreme. I really liked the EP on backhands, but my suspicions were correct - Yoko with lead at 12 hits as big as I thought it did. Basically it is capable of anything I want to do. I am just so used to the solid feel that the EP felt hollow to me.

I guess the benefits of playing with one stick for a long time became really obvious today because while the EP is truly a nice tweener, it could not match the Tec at all. I was just looking for a nice backup stick to have in the bag for some fun, but it is not to be with this racquet. Maybe ill try out a new Radical and see how that goes, but this EP can't touch Yoko for me.

Last week i have tested 3 new Babolat-frames from the brand new line that is talked about in another thread. The heavy 18/20 version will be my new racquet of choice for now.. WICKED!

I have also tried POG OS, POG 100 LB and Response. Response is such a great serve and volley racquet it´s amazing. Lightning fast.

I was just looking for a nice backup stick to have in the bag for some fun, but it is not to be with this racquet. Maybe ill try out a new Radical and see how that goes, but this EP can't touch Yoko for me.

Every time you try other racquets, you are chipping away at that nice connection you now have with your 315. Is it really worth it? I know this, because I had a super solid connection with my Blade 104 and then I starting playing now and then with the Volkl V1 Mp and what happened was I lost that connection I had going with the 104. Sure I can get it back, but looking back, I should have just stayed where I was. If you feel that 100% connection and total familiarity with a frame, then don't mess with it! JMO.

I don't know why you care this much Jack. It is almost like you do it and feel self conscious so you feel the urge to project onto others. But that couldn't be it, could it now?

Now and then I am going to grab a stick for a bit and play with one because I am a tennis player. Is that ok?

Could be some of that, but honestly I'm just relaying my own recent experience. You just sounded so set with your 315 so I thought, why mess with it? Maybe you are better able to keep things "seperated" than I am and keep the feel for your main stick? For some reason, I seem to lose that feeling easily and then regret it afterwards. But do whatever you like...it's a free country and you have more experience at these things than I do.

It's just kinda funny how you stayed away from this thread for so long because of the reasons you provided and now somehow those things don't matter anymore? Whatever...

What are you talking about Jack? Sounds like once again you want to start a fight in this thread. Are you going to tell me that I can't try a racquet now and then, and I need to answer to you? I currently can't find any Tecs in my area in my gripsize so I'd like an alternative even though I doubt it's going to happen.

Hey guys, I apologize for reviewing this Extreme. Apparently it bothers Jack that I did it for some super weird reason.

And by the way nice edit of your post into a passive aggressive attack.
