The Dominic Thieminator Thread

No cha-ching here. I would have bet on Mahut if anything. Was a joke that Thiem was that big of a favorite when he's not even good.

Thanks! My early career swing at journalism coming through.

Mahut on clay should be winnable if The Thieminator doesn't take him too lightly. The blurbs I've read about him make it seem that's not going to be a problem. He reminds me of a certain SexiSwiss guy in his study habits of the opposition and his appreciation of their talents and experience. I say Thiem in straights, maybe a TB in one. His TB record is strong.

No problem, just giving credit where credit is due.

Unfortunately, the Thieminator lost after being up a set and a break to Mahut, a 32 year old maybe not so journeyman lately, (ranked #39, will go up after this), who's best surface is grass by far. Oh well, an opportunity lost, but he'll bounce back, has a lot of time.

Wonder why Thiem is playing in playing in Barcelona as the #1 seed in qualifying when he could have gotten through to the main draw of Bucharest? Probably because Barcelona is ATP500 and Bucharest is ATP250, but still, maybe his favorite surface is clay, who knows?

He beat S Diez 6-3, 6-3 in Q1.

Both are clay. It might have to do with big brother Gulbis...they share a coach and train together. Gulbis is #9 in Barcelona.

The Thieminator makes main draw Barcelona. Hope he draws the spot in the top quarter...Will put him on path through Spanish Chokemada...Verdasco, Almagro, Nadal.

Thiem needs to learn to take the ball on the rise, he waits way too long to return. Top tennis must be played fast!

Also his consistency is not there (yet).

and now it's all gone.

Main draw in Barcelona is out...the Thieminator vs the Worm on Monday.

Another crafty veteran probably better suited for faster surfaces. Let's hope for a better outcome than the M-C Mahut loss. Winner plays Grunthollers.

Thiem defeated Stepanek 6:4 6:4 after trailing in the second set 2:4 he managed to win 4 straight games to close it out. Bamos Thiem!

Thinking he and Kyrgios could set up an interesting Rivalry as they move up the tour.

There are others in this 90's-born crop...Vesely, the other "K"'s (Kokkinakis, Kosakowski). Pray that it does turn out rivalries in 2nd weeks of majors within the next couple of years!

Good win today, Thieminator! Next up is a real test...a Spaniard in Barcelona. Mach schon, Dominator!

No way Thiem beats Granollers on a clay court in Spain. REALLY hope he proves me wrong, not a fan of gruntollers at all and would be a great win for Thiem, but I don't see it happening.

Yeah, it's a tough ask bcoz of the "home court" factor but he did reach the RG juniors final, losing 8-6 in the third, and he had two wins on the dirt in Kitzbuhel, including a win over Melzer so he does red clay OK.

Good luck!

He is storming towards the top 20!

Beyond that is a big question, you need much more than just being a big hitter to get into the top 10.

from the match today i felt he can almost go down from UEs and lack of consistency,
but he somehow manages to find some kind of a "zone" and then he looks like a serious beast.

but it's not good enough. he has to get more focused.

I think he's 25 matches or so in to a nice career. Rome wasn't built in a day. This is good progress!

What's up with Granollers' grip/motion on serve? It just looks odd to me.

Very extreme grip, yeah it's not the best looking serve at all. Another reason to not like him. Glad Thiem beat him. Up next, probably The Fog!

I think his 1-handed backhand will restrict him from becoming top 5 in the world. people will pick on it and it will break down

Next up in R3 is Giraldo, courtesy of Flavia-less Fognini's retirement at 6-0, 4-0.

This is one to be prepared for with the day's rest after 2 qualie & 2 MD matches.

Mach schon, Thieminator!

what i noticed yesterday,
is that he HAS to take the balls earlier.
he's taking at the drop, slowing the rallies,
and it's really working against him.

He's going to go far at Barcelona if he holds his game together.

It's always great to see "new blood" breakthrough. Especially with a one hander ;)

A win over Giraldo (reasonable ask) and a Melzer win over Kohlie (also reasonable) and it sets up a rematch of Kitzbuhel'13 vs his idol. He won that one with far less experience.

Thursday is critical. No letdowns can be afforded. Mach schon, Thieminator!

Giraldo is in good form so Dominic won't be the favourite. Thiem will have to play at a high level and take his chances when they come.

On court now! The Thieminator needs our support for this next step up the ladder. Beat Giraldo and ready yourself for the Kohlie, Dominator!

Mach schon!

theiminator looking very solid to win this first set, should he get this win we are looking at rankings in the 60s
i feel apart of his camp, its like a drug
love the support stringertom!
