USTA wants to "share" 2014 nationals with everyone

I've already had to skip a season even before this rule. Now it is going to make things even worse. I'm more worried about the 10.0 mixed than the 5.0 mens. There are tons of mens teams, but very few mixed teams (usually 3) and that is my favorite league.

Hrm... I didnt give 10.0 much thought, but now that I think about it, a 5.0 woman has to be just as uncommon as a 5.5 male. I dont know any 5.0 women, but know a lot of 4.5 women.

Even if you qualify for nationals and don't accept it, all the players on that team are still considered national players. This happened to me in the 2012 season where we qualified but did not go. Then another team in our section went instead. It made forming teams the next year impossible because there were already only 3 teams in the league.

Really? I didnt know that. I know you're a "nationals player" even if you dont play at nationals all, but your team goes. That's kinda brutal to not even send a team to nationals, yet the whole team is considered "national players."

If you qualified for Nationals, that would mean you won your section. So if you played a match in Sectionals, you would be a Benchmark player to add to the problem of being a Nationals player. If you get bumped up like me, you can't appeal down the next year.

Reviving this thread, it appears the 2015 regulations have changed to relax the rules regarding 2015 teams forming with 2014 Nationals players. See http://computerratings.blogspot.com/2014/08/new-usta-league-nationals-move-upsplit.html for my write-up on it that includes a link to the regulations document.

The summary is that:

- Teams are allowed to move up an NTRP team level and play in another age group within the same division
- There is no restriction for crossover between Adult and Mixed Divisions.
- Move Up/Split Up requirements apply only to players who participated in 3 or more matches, excluding defaults, for that team during the championships year.

So it does address many of the issues this thread highlighted.

Thanks for posting. Pretty sure the real reason they changed it again was because they saw how badly their bottom line was affected by restricting people from playing. Didn't exactly 'grow' the sport now, did it?

I think a lot of teams did what ours did. "See you in 2 years."

It's not cheap but what a great memory. I get the concept of why the USTA wants to share it.

It was, but I'm glad they made these changes. The one thing that upset me about the old MU/SU was that my subs who only played a match or two and didn't get in any of the playoffs much less nationals were screwed this year. That seems to be addressed with this.

Does anyone know how much registrations are down this year due to the new Move Up/Split Up rule?

I think it will make teams that make nationals weaker (in general).
