The Wizard of Oz was made when America was just coming out of The Depression. 'Follow the Yellow Brick Road' was an allegorical reference to buying gold during The Depression. The gold price was revalued overnight by the Roosevelt government as a means of trying to reflate the system. Though private hoarding of gold was outlawed during much of the 1930's, gold mining companies provided one of the very scare opportunities to make money during the 1930's slump.

Death by skin suffocation, as depicted in "Goldfinger", is a fallacy. You might get uncomfortably warm but you breathe through your nose and your mouth.

Talking about death and nasty forms of torture reminds me of one of the things they used to do to 'encourage' people to talk during the French Revolution. It involved cutting out an eyeball, inserting a cockroach, and then sowing up an eyelid...

The French New Wave cinema movement of the late 50's/early 60's was a revolutionary change of style in the movie business and was created by directors who were often first trained in cinema critique by the editorial staff of the magazine "Cahiers du Cinema".

The Grand Guignol was a Parisian theatre company in the early twentieth century which bought the gory and macabre to life via 'cutting edge' special effects.

To refer to something as 'Grand Guignol' suggests a disturbing level of gruesomeness.

The guillotine was invented by a French physician, Antoine Louis, although it is named after another physician, Joseph Guillotin, who advocated for a more "humane" method of execution. The guillotine was France's method of capital punishment execution until 1981. Off with their heads!

'Tennis Clubs' conjures up two images for me.

1. The All England Club
2. Neanderthals playing tennis with clubs

Civil rights activist Eldridge Cleaver was marketing a line of pants in the 1970's featuring "the Cleaver sleeve," an insert for the comfort (and enhanced display of) one's member. I don't think they came in my size, though. :(

Elvis Costello is very much alive and married to Diana Krall. They make beautiful music together and twin boys Dexter and Frank (age 8).

Cupid must've left his/her heart in San Francicsco, otherwise he/she might've chosen Tony Bennett instead, or any new kid on the block.

My first San Francisco anthem was "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)", written by Mamas/Papas John Phillips for his ex-band member Scott McKenzie.

San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair)

It was also played occasionally by Let's Sipp (sic) as part of the improvised section in the middle of Dazed and Confused''.

Awaken in Trondheim, dazed and confused in mid-December, having sipped too much Norwegian "moonshine" in a forest, not sure if the day is getting late or it is still the middle of the night...

I met Elvis Costello backstage at Fleadh 1999 in Golden Gate Park. We talked for a few minutes and he seemed really funny. Diana did well.

The sound of Maria, two and a half hours of complete and utter shrieks...

Poor Grigor...two and a half hours of utter Shriekapova on a nightly basis might be the cause most to blame for his recent decline.

I wonder how Madmoiselle Sharapova would like to be thought of as a consolation prize!?

Putin is a short man who is far closer to Cibulkova than Sharapova in height. Since he and his team try to portray him as a virile and powerful man in images, it would be fun to see how they would try to make him seem taller next to her. Maybe they would give up, and let Maria walk around with Putin sitting on her shoulder...

The Ritz-Carlton in Orlando would be an Absolut-ely nice run in my pedicab, which would require a good amount of recovery fluids after I'm finished.
