"CHOKING" gets to us all. Very hard to deal with.

Really easy for me (but sometimes Im a bit simple), I just don't worry about it! Each time I go out on the court, my aim is to hit well. By hitting well, I should play well and build my own confidence from there. If I choose to worry, then doubt and fear are my new best friends. When you...

teaching tennis to a 6 year old...?

All of the above - most important element is fun! I see lots of people take it far too seriously at that age, and then the kid hates it! I remember reading some articles too talking about the importance of teaching it right the first time. A lot of people start with a grip and then a few years...

    How to choose a coach?

This is a really good point Dave, and it comes down to the coach being able to 'sell' the idea of using the more advanced techniques so that the student can improve while still developing their game for the long term. Also, make sure that you can get along with the coach - it will work out...

are you really supposed to use an eastern backhand grip for the kick serve?

Like the others have said, you don't HAVE TO use the eastern backhand grip for kickers but it does make it a lot easier. There are a few drills you can do to get the feeling of brushing the ball, one good one is: To trap the ball behind your head with your racquet, and roll the ball over the...

    Instructor's question...

It all depends as Bill said. If I had a student who wished to work on 'under the legs' chase shots, but really had to work on their forehand, you can guess which one I would choose. Maybe ask for clarification as to why you are working on what the instructor suggests, and if you still feel...

My *power* forehand has an inside-out movement? Why?

To me (unless I am reading it wrong) it seems that your swing path is what is causing you to have this result on the ball. When I read the topic title, I thought that's fantastic, well done to you - because the ideal swing path is from inside to outside so that you can brush either up the ball...

Small courts and low compression balls for kids

Definitely keep rallying with the low compression balls from the full court. Sure the balls don't bounce as much but it will really allow him to hit right through the ball and will give him more time to get in position for his shots. Then slowly introduce "hard" balls to get and start rallying...
