    Grumpy player in foursome

I've been trying to it (and maybe it was in a magazine and not online), but there was an article I read that did a study that showed that partner that did use physical contact (a 'weak' high five - like just touching hands in the high five manner, but a waist level if that makes sense) after...

Yes, I quite agree that vandalism is the only properly reply to this situation. Well done. emoticon added just in case someone mistook my comment for genuine approval.

USTA captain seeking lineup advice--righty/lefty question

I think they meant that at 3.0 (and I'd even argue 3.5) a "lefty slice serve" is largely non-existent. I've played a LOT of 3.0 tennis and faced 3.5 and 4.0 lefty players in 6.0 & 7.0 and the only time as a 3.0 player that I noticed someone was left handed because of the difficulty of their...

    Bad Line Calls

Exactly. And everyone makes bad calls. I think it makes for a more enjoyable time on court if you can attribute the occasional bad call to an honest mistake rather than someone deliberating cheating you. In reading this thread it occurred to me that in the almost five years of playing...

Spinning racket to see who serves first

As someone else who plays with a Babalot, I usually try to defer spinning my racquet because I always get the side-eye when I explain red (solid/sun/whatever) is up and the stripes (white/night/whatever) is down. Like I'm trying to cheat them on the toss. Even though I explain well before I...

4.5 singles leagues in AZ? Tempe, Chandler, Scottsdale, East Valley?

I'm a little late to this thread, but if you want something informally formal, you can try contacting Charlie Simmons @ flexleaguecaz@gmail.com. He's the flex league coordinator. This season is already mostly over, but it did have a number of men in the 4.5 flight: Men's 4.5 Singles -- 10...

    Excuses excuses excuses

HA! Yes. My own personal one (used by yours truly): I'm flying to Vegas tomorrow to get married. It was true, and I shouldn't have played but there was no one else. But wow, was it hard to keep my mind on the game.

self rate up a level if you already have a C rating

As others said, you can appeal up, but I don't know if that process is any easier to accomplish than appealing down. You could possibly try playing up on a 3.5 team for another club/location that does allow it until you get bumped naturally if that works logistically.

Struck in head by serve of "partner?"

From what I can tell, it was the server's partner at fault in this instance. He popped up from his crouch way too soon. I don't worry about this much when I'm playing with the 3.0 women because none of them (myself included) serve hard enough to actually hurt someone if they did hit me...

Calling a let on neighboring tennis court in USTA match.

You can, of course, notify anyone at anytime that a ball that is not their own is rolling onto their court. You may not, however, call a let on any court other than your own. How I handle this is if I mishit a ball that goes into another occupied court I will say something only if someone...

Calling a hindrance when a guy groans about his own shot

To me this is the key factor: it's only a hindrance when you are hindered. You ask if it would be fair to call during a competitive match. It's not as black and white to say: this is what my opponent did, is that a hindrance. The mere act of talking during a point, or groaning when you've...

Have you ever injured someone/been injured from a struck tennis ball?

Closest I've come was during a mixed doubles tournament: my partner was serving and I was playing at the net (as I'm wont to do during doubles). My partner hit a weaker second serve and the male opponent unloaded on a forehand up the line. Apparently my reflexes are quick enough for a...

How much does grunting bother you?

If she was grunting on every shot, then your opponents are full of crap because anything that's that consistent is not done "specifically to intimidate". Tell your partner to grunt away! Not much that an opponent does bothers me. I'm good at tuning out outside distractions. I think it...

Am I being overly sensitive here?

Usually when someone posts a topic asking a question like that the answer is going to be "yes, you're being overly sensitive" and not even needing to read the OP. However, in this case: no you're not being overly sensitive. That's just rude. When I send balls back to the server if my aim...

When to notify the opposing team about known default?

I didn't vote because my answer wasn't an option: I let the other captain know by early afternoon the day of the match even if I knew days before. Just in case something miraculously changes but still in time for the opposing team to notify people so they don't make a wasted trip.

Are Tennis Players More Delusional About Their Abilities Than Other People?

I would consider them both grammatically correct but meaning two entirely different things as Cindy mentioned in her post above. Cindy, you'll be amused to know I hear it from 3.0 players! Women at that! I say to them: That's 3.0 ladies tennis.

Picking order of players for singles team

Mixed 6.0 - I would say I'm a strong #2 on my current team. On a different team, I may be a #3, or #4 Mixed 7.0 - I'm the weakest woman on my team, but we do have a strong team and only one other 3.0 woman other than myself. Ladies 3.0 18+ - We have 12 on the team. Singles, I'm...

    Taming A Gamer

I think the difference in your example and in Cindy's post is that your opponent did it every time so it was consistent and (probably) not designed to be deliberately distracting. However, the woman in Cindy's post didn't do it at all during the match, until a critical moment for the opposing...

    Taming A Gamer

As TennisTom pointed out, the opposing captain's sarcastic comment is a complaint. If you care about your team's reputation, then you must address it. Will it be awkward and uncomfortable? Probably. Does that mean you shouldn't do it? Absolutely not. As the shoe squeaking happened so...

Rude to Return Out Service Ball to Server Especially When It's Obviously a Fault?

This is one of those things that annoys me as a server and I won't do as a receiver, but just seems too petty to actually complain about during a match.

How would you react to this request?

We sure have it good where I am. It's $30 to register for a team and court & ball costs and how they are paid are at the discretion of the captains. Some do a pay as you play method. Some have the entire team pay equally. Since I play everyone equally, I divide the costs for the whole team...

    Mixed doubles tournament Rules

This. Serve whatever will get the most free points or weak returns. Depending on what level the woman is, you might find that she'll have a hard time returning the kicker than your fast-paced first serve, so whichever one works best, use that one.

    best serve combo for 3.0

As a 3.0 who does "rip winners off a floater serve", I disagree that we don't. Because my serve sucked (it's getting better) and I got broken so much, I worked incredibly hard on developing a very good return of serve. While the rest of my game lingers at the solid 3.0 level, my return of...

    Joy of Captaining....

In our current season, we have 15 matches and I have (12) people on the team. Everyone is playing at least 10 matches, except for 1 or 2 people whose travel schedules have turned out worse than they expected. I have tried to arrange that the stronger people are always in the line up when we...

    Joy of Captaining....

That's why with the teams that I captain (thankfully only (1) this season), I try to put together 1) strong players, 2) good personalities and 3) just enough people to hopefully ensure I never have to default a court. It's my philosophy that, as you said above, people join a team expecting to...

Playing with new doubles partner, partner falls apart

Yes. It does. I believe it matters more the higher you are as the skill level between the NTRP levels grows exponentially the higher you are. For example, the difference between a 2.5 and a 3.0 is practically non-existent* while the difference between a 3.0 and a 3.5 is noticeable (as I...
