    4.5+ Clinics Orange County, CA

Hey all, I'll be in the Newport Beach area in early August, and am looking for 4.5 level group adult clinics (morning or afternoon). Hopefully something that I don't have to join any clubs or anything like that. I'll have a rental car so i'm open to almost any area within a 30-45 min drive...

Orange County & Palo Alto/San Jose area - Looking to hit

Hey all, Next week i'm doing some travelling for family stuff but could bring my racquet if I can find people to hit with, or play a fun doubles match. Otherwise, I am also fine with taking clinics, so if anyone knows any coaches or clinics in the these areas? I'm a 4.0 player from Austin...

'Natural Gut Wholesale' Review (Stringing and Play)

thanks! I played about 6 hours with it so far and it's a very good string. Love playing with it. I don't like the oil, but maybe the value and performance wins out. I'll get a few more packs and experiment.

'Natural Gut Wholesale' Review (Stringing and Play)

Dredging up an old thread from the past. Apologies for not being able to read through all the comments. A friend recently gave me a half set of NGW to test it out, since I'm a stringer and he's interested to hear what I think of them. Just strung them up tonight, gut mains with Solinco...

    String @ 80lbs...

If you're > 4.5 player, then you're just picking on a weaker strong 3.5-weak 4.0 player about his string setups. Hope that makes you feel good about yourself. If I were you, I would be supportive of weaker players that find string setups that give them more control, because that's what makes...

    String @ 80lbs...

Not necessary "need". I wouldn't say I need it. Its more of a test, an experimentation. It's honestly fun playing with a string set up where I know the ball is pretty much bouncing straight off my racquet. The launch angle is near zero. That makes for a good amount of precision. The other...

    String @ 80lbs...

Spin is considerably less than poly setups. But it's also lower powered, so its really hard to hit long. As long as I'm swinging low to high and finishing high over my left shoulder, i don't have problems with spin.

    String @ 80lbs...

If I normally string Solinco Tour Bite soft @ 55 lbs, I doubt syn gut @ 78 will cause me harm.

    String @ 80lbs...

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I was just primarily concerned about causing harm to my frame. Luckily syn gut is cheap, i pay $40 a reel. I'm also not a string breaker, so I seriously doubt i'll break strings. My fastest serve is only 60 mph. Thanks!

    String @ 80lbs...

I’ve recently became enamored with stringing plain old syn gut at 80 lbs in my RF97. I get so much precision, control. I can swing as hard as I want and it stays in. I’ve never had that control with poly before. I normally string poly @ 55lbs. My question is: am I going to damage my frame by...

    Apparently on UTR I'm a 5, which means I'm a 2.5. Whoopee!

    What % of pros...

Have their sticks professionally customized to have a recoil weight of > 170? Or is a high recoil weight just a myth that recreational player/nerds like to talk about? Is it a real thing or does the professional tennis community not care about such trivial things? Inquiring minds want to know :)

    Poor Man’s Champion Choice

A better option is to buy a pack of Babolat Tonic + and Solinco Tour Bite Diamond Rough. That's truly Champion's Choice on a budget.

    Calling all customization experts!

I disagree. The racquet has a stock strung swing weight of 315. In order to get a SW of 360, you'd have to add 15 grams. I suggested that he add 6 grams. If the specs were a swing weight of 315 unstrung, then you would be correct.

    Calling all customization experts!

You're going to have to make some sacrifices: there's almost no way to guarantee those specific specs. So you need to decide first what is most important to you (out of each of those conditions), stick with that decision, and then be flexible with everything else. Only you can say which of...

    Looser = Better?

Depends on what you're playing and why you're playing it. If you just hit on weekends with friends in a social setting and play friendly games for fun, then I recommend stringing as low as 35 lbs with full poly because it's comfortable, safe, and gives you a lot of spin. You won't have much...

    Causes for double faults?

Not looking at the ball when it's in the air. Dropping your chin too soon. Look at the ball during and through contact. Only drop your chin once you've hit the ball.

    TLS Rating vs Tennisrecords

This is a bad thing IMO. I'm looking at my record, and I have a few wins this year in a singles league that is NOT officially sanctioned with USTA, even though you can see my results in my tennislink account. So they will not count towards my NTRP. But tennisrecord.com is using those...

    Most sought after pro stock

I've always been a fan of the PT57a. Would love to get my hands on one of Murray's sticks. I hear its a beast of a racquet. Something like a swing weight of 400!

Why don't more pros use the RF97?

The only amazing thing about Federer's racquet, is that it's one of the few retail frames that the average person can purchase that's actually a pro stock frame. It's a really good racquet, and it's one that anyone can buy in any tennis store. That's an amazing thing and one of the biggest...

    Oakley lens tint

The golf prizims let more light in, so when the sun is bright, it makes it tough to play in those conditions. The road tint lets less light in, so it is more comfortable in really bright light. The prizm lenses work fine on any type of court. The high contrast tints makes it easier to see the...

    Oakley lens tint

I have both the Road and Golf specific Prizms and they are the best tennis lenses I've ever used. I've had black iridium and G30 and those are good too. Can't go wrong with any of them. But I think the new Prizms are the best lenses they've put out in a long time. I usually use the Golf...

With all the variables, how do you pick a racquet to stick with?

I'm results oriented. If I lose 6 or more matches in a row, I switch racquets. My record this year so far is 3-15, so I've switched racquets three times. Started off with Pure Drive Team, lost 6 matches in a row and switched to the Babolat Pure Aero, lost 10 matches in a row and now I'm using...

    Tension recommendations

I use the RF97 (black) with Solinco Tour Bite 17 @ 36lbs. Thinking of experimenting with gut/poly hybrid. What would you recommend for tension? I was thinking 50/46?

Your least favourite shot to play and why?

Backhand: it sucks. I can hit a 1 hander, 2 hander and slice. They all suck. I train, practice, take lessons, drill, still sucks. it will never get better. even if you're a 3.0, just hit to my backhand and you're guaranteed to win. played a singles match with a friend the other night, he...

    How heavy is too heavy?

I don't think the weight of the racquet matters for timing: it's footwork. If you're late to the ball, a lighter frame won't help. I think it's just an excuse to look for something to change that you can purchase, as opposed to putting the work in. Too many amateurs are slow to get to the...

Adding lead tape at 12 past a certain extent

IMO what you're experiencing is the fact that you're throwing off the balance of your racquet. I sometimes add a little bit of lead to the tip to give me a little more depth, but there is a limit to how much I can add before I screw up the balance. 2 or so grams isn't a big deal, but if I'm...
