Big rule changes to come to the ATP shortly

I really hate watching Fast4 matches. 2 good players almost always go to a tie break. But I like the shot clock. Instead of no-ad scoring, they should remove the second serve to speed things up. That would also lead to more points being longer than 2 shots.

    One Serve Only. It's Time.

The 2 serve rule was invented when it was quite difficult to serve. Aside from the small wooden rackets, their feet weren't allowed to leave the ground. Serving these days is quite easy. A 7 year old can serve consistently from the baseline with practice. I don't think the tennis pecking order...

    One Serve Only. It's Time.

You think breaks of serve are less exciting than holds of serve? When you think about it... why do we get two chances to get the serve in? Should we also get two chances to hit the down the line winner? Should the returner get another chance if they miss the return? Why should anyone get two...

    One Serve Only. It's Time.

I agree, fast conditions can produce great quality tennis... unless one of them has a very dominant serve. Removing the first serve and speeding up conditions would allow the most talented and exciting players to rise to the top.

Yeah, but with dynamic movement, shot variety and tactics. :)

    One Serve Only. It's Time.

I love tennis, I coach full time and spend my down time watching it on TV... But I have to admit that most matches are pretty boring. I think going to one serve only would provide for more interesting rallies, and provide far more break point opportunities. I think you would see players...

Modern tennis not slow and boring enough for Rafa; he wants it even slower and boringer.

I think going to one serve only will create a lot more rallies and more exciting break opportunities, without increasing the length of matches. Maybe keep it 2 serves for amateur tournaments, but pros certainly don't need 2 chances.

Modern tennis not slow and boring enough for Rafa; he wants it even slower and boringer.

There are only two big servers in the top 20, and they both use flexible, low powered frames, very much like the ones from 20 years ago. Rafa's Babolat has the most power in the top 20. I guess you could ban players from using gut hybrids (poly only to ensure that players keep each other...

I am officially moving Djokovic to tier 1 now - is there any reasonable argument to deny him this?

I think he will need to break every record in tennis before he gets respect.

Big Name Academies and Making it in the Pro's

From what I understand, each year, an average of about 8 new players enter the top 100, and thus start earning more money than they spend on the tour. So thousands of parents are spending enormous amounts of money (upwards of $200,000 per year) in the academy system, or with private coaches...

"Bernie" decides he doesn't want to play anymore.

I think all the well seeded players have tanked lead in tournaments to save themselves for Majors. They are just better at hiding it.

Lol @ Kyrgios' outfit for AO 2016. Just lol

Clearly a Wawrinka fan at Nike is exacting revenge.

    Kygrios to blade 98?

It's amazing how him picking up someone else's racket can have such far reaching ramifications. :)

Player's racquets = high powered, not low powered

I see some good young women at the lower levels of the tour trying to use ATP style forehands (due to coaches being on a "ATP forehand is king" kick for the last 10 years). Their heavy forehands sit up beautifully into the other girl's strike zone, and they generally get blown off the court...

Player's racquets = high powered, not low powered

When TW measures power, I believe the racket is static, and they just test how fast the ball bounces off it. The ball comes off the stiffer, bigger head sized rackets faster than the flexible, smaller rackets. So the power measurements don't take into account swing weight, which is a major...

American Jr Tennis why are we falling behind?

Having line judges isn't economical, and finding volunteer parents to call 12 courts isn't practical. I've seen peers sit in the ump's chair between their own matches, but when they get it wrong, all hell breaks loose (saw one little girl crying as two 12 year old boys were barking up at her...

American Jr Tennis why are we falling behind?

From what I understand, the USTA budget is only $15m per year. They can't do a whole lot of direct grass roots work accross such a large base.

American Jr Tennis why are we falling behind?

Well he went from about 40th in the country to 5th in the country in 12 months after the massive increase in training hours. I'm not saying I advocate putting kids through that, but it certainly does produce results.

American Jr Tennis why are we falling behind?

Here are the ITF guidelines for how much a child should train, which is generally adhered to by first-world national federations. 6-8 years old · 3-4 sessions a week, each session not longer tan 45 minutes. 9-11 years old · 1 hour 3-4 times a week. 12-14 years old · 2-3 hours a day, 4-5 times...

    Wrist flick/snap is a must

What I was talking about is teenage players who can hit forehands that make people go "wow!". While it is important to be "loose", there are obviously muscles twitching and stresses being put on the body. Inject some Botox into your arm muscles and see if you can still hit a forehand. :) For...

What exactly should I teach me female friend differently?

The big factor is the movement of her opponents. Generally girls aren't as good at defense, so hitting fast and flat, and changing direction a lot, gives a better risk reward ratio than the men's game. If she plays a lot of points against another good female player, she will be able to develop...

    Wrist flick/snap is a must

With my lower level players, I tell them to lock their wrist. With my advanced teenagers, I tell them to have a loose wrist and really dip and whip the ball. This produces both more spin and more forward speed. The wrist letting the racket lay back and then rebounding (releasing) forward into...

We Shouldn't Be Copying The Pros

Actually they are extremely flexible... like hitting with a cushion. And the weight means that as long as you hit on the strings, the frame doesn't twist as much as modern rackets. They are a fun hit, and can help players who have been able to get away with bad technique with modern rackets...

Head Graphene Prestige, worth the switch?

From what I've heard, the Graphenes feel heavier to swing, but aren't as stable, and have less feel than the IG.

    Serving with the Eastern FH

It takes time. Get them playing a throwing game every lesson. Demo good throwing mechanics to them when needed. Do a lot of (conti grip) serving without consequence practice (they will never change serve if they are only serving in competitive situations.) Play the "Djokovic game" (slamming the...

ATP completes review on Kyrgios incident

I don't think he goes a single match without getting finned for swearing. It will be a good exercise for him to try and control himself until after the US Open. Tennis Australia should have done it 5 years ago (TA junior tournaments are a giant spoiled brat-athon... literally kids screaming at...
