    Federer vs. Sampras

The consecutive U.S. Opens where Sampras lost did represent the changing of the guard, but that makes his final title there that much more impressive. At the time Roger beat Pete at Wimbledon he was beginning to show flashes of his future brilliance but would still founder in tournaments for...

How many consecutive slams for Federer?

If he wins the French and stays healthy, odds are good that he will win the Slam. The French, however, is not a foregone conclusion.

What’s up with all this sick French Open fascination?

I just looked this up, turns out the red clay has been there since 1928: The French Open began as a national tournament in 1891. In 1925, the French Championships opened itself to international competitors with the event held on a grass surface alternatively between the Racing Club de France...

What’s up with all this sick French Open fascination?

You're right, Rog did lose in 4 to Nadal. My bad. I loved Henman's run at the French. So unlikely and yet he didn't give up even to the end. If Sampras had gotten to just one final there I could feel that he tried. Maybe with the new racquet technology he could have, since, as someone...

Unsolvable situation - need yr advise !

Are you sure it's legit? It seems like a phishing scam to me. Actually your post seems like it could be the beginning of a phishing scam too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing

    Pull your pants up, Daniela

I particularly like the part about "one x-small sweat pant". I squirt (squirted?) coke out my nose.

dennis10is, that is f-in brilliant dude!

What’s up with all this sick French Open fascination?

I'll be tuning in to see if Roger can pull it off. If he does, he clearly distinguishes himself from Sampras et. al. as the consummate all-surface player. When was the last time we had one of those? Agassi's the only man in recent history to do a career slam. Roger almost did it last...

Woods vs Federer & Tennis vs Golf

I played tennis on my high school team (#6 singles and that was the coach being nice to me because I was on time for practice.) My biggest gripe about tennis is that since then it's hard to find a game. I don't belong to a racquet club, so there's no natural casual environment for finding...

    Pull your pants up, Daniela

I think Daniela looks great. She's back to looking healthy after all her eating disorder woes.

Woods vs Federer & Tennis vs Golf

I think golf is more popular because it is truly a rich person's game. Rich golfers will pay money for anything, including midnight coverage of a tournament in Dubai. I'm a casual golfer, but I am often amazed at how poor the programming is sometimes on the Golf Channel, and yet it's still...

    Most convoluted/ridiculous backhand/forehand/serve?

The funny thing about Shalken, is that a guy that tall should totally be able to crank a serve, but his fastest is probably 115. And he never approaches the net if he can help it. I've always been intrigued by players who play counter to what their body type would indicate.

"Why I play 10 ft behind the baseline - I'm a big Guga fan", by Andy Roodick.

I love Guga, but as he only ever won the French, you would probably have to view this strategy as working best on clay.

    WOW! Amelie donating her racquet!!!!!!

If it was from the final, it's a pretty good deal for the eventual buyer due to the minimal string wear.

Can we just get rid of Davis Cup already?

All right, I take it back about TH. Actually I decided not to use his name in case I'm wrong.

Can we just get rid of Davis Cup already?

Dedans, your description of those old DC matches are awesome. That must have been the golden age, Mac calling Lendl a communist. If that sort of thing were still happening today I'd pay any amount of money to see that. Maybe that's the problem, everything's too PC and nice today.

    Most convoluted/ridiculous backhand/forehand/serve?

Oh, I totally forgot about Karsten Braasch! I think he might get my vote in all categories. On Sabbatini, I didn't think her forehand that bad, just that it had a lot more topspin than most. I was having a hard time thinking of examples. Connors overhead, you're right, it's totally...

    Roddick needs Brad Gilbert

I agree that Roddick is not just a quick fix away from winning another major. As for Brad Gilbert's coaching, one need look no further than his annoying commentary at the AO to get an idea of what having him as a coach might be like. I really missed Johnnie Mac this year.

    Most convoluted/ridiculous backhand/forehand/serve?

I've seen other threads on who has the best or most compact. How about the most unorthodox? My votes (with all respect) Backhand: During his prime - Jimmy Arias - no contest Forehand: Hmm, this is tougher, maybe Gabriela Sabbatini or Sergei Bruguera Serve: Dementieva

    Tiger Woods or Roger Federer?

Only problem with the poll is that the answers aren't mutually exclusive. I think they will each pass their respective people, (choice 6), but that Federer will do it first (choice 1) How about this poll: How many French Opens will Federer win: 0 1 2 or more

Can we just get rid of Davis Cup already?

You guys are funny with your terminology. OP=noob troll. That's a good one. The reason I posted about it is because I know people are on both sides of the fence on this. It's just not popular to say out loud that you don't like it. People act like it's religious blasphemy. I know fans...

    Tears from a role model

I think Roger's emotion is tied to his artistic sensibility. He's a maestro on the court, so like Mahler he cries when he finishes a symphony.

    Is Marcos Baghdatis God?

Marcos is a god. A Greek god to be exact. He lives on mount Olympus and was able to woo Camille by coming to her in the form of a bull. For six months out of the year, he takes her to the underworld. That is why we have winter.

Had Nadal played the open, what would have happened?

I think we've seen it too many times to be surprised. In general, in men's tennis there are two types of players: a) Those who can win on grass and hard courts. b) Those who can win on clay. Federer is in the (a) category and Nadal (b) I like Nadal, but I fear his career is more...

Can we just get rid of Davis Cup already?

Actually, I vote for getting rid of the Ryder cup too, and I'm a big golf fan. I don't care if the best of Europe can beat the best of the U.S. Golf, like tennis, is an individual sport. I have heroes in both sports, but they aren't all Americans. In fact, I hate the US media bias for not...

    Pete Sampras speaks on Federer

Pete Sampras is the greatest serve and volley player in the history of the game, hands down. Federer will never match his skill at the net. But Sampras was never as good as Federer in so many other ways. You can compare the two players on their records (maybe the way you would compare...

Can we just get rid of Davis Cup already?

The only people who care about it are the McEnroes and some fans in Argentina. I think it's just a distraction now, the way the Olympics are a distraction for NBA players. Does anyone care who's country has the best team one year? (Or more accurately, which country was able to get more of...

Aus Open - Things that annoyed me!

Things that annoyed me: 1) Live Final on ESPN was 12:30 a.m. Pacific time in U.S. 2) Mauresmo winning by default. 3) Luke Jensen, Brad Gilbert, and Chris Fowler. My TiVo fast-forward finger got a cramp. Where was Johnny Mac? 4) Kiefer's racket toss. It reminded me of...

    Could Roddick become like Agassi?

I don't think Roddick has horrible form. I think his strokes are actually too mundane. They have too much topspin, and carry neither the finesse and placement of Federer, or the sheer power of Safin. Safin hits the ball flat and hard, with great weight. He's the only one who can use power...
