Wasn't Nadal the guy who couldn't win his first ATP250 of the season?

Not all qualifiers are necessarily bad players. Bernard Tomic was a qualifier at Wimbledon 2011 and gave Djokovic a tight match in the QF, losing 7-5 in the fourth set. And Delbonis has broken the greatest clay-court player in world history once (2R, 2013 VTR Open). Nadal won the match 6-3 6-2.

Delbonis just has everything together at this tournament so he's utilizing his ability and playing without fear...with that "nothing to loose" attitude.

Yep -- then went on to win-

    Brasil Open (ATP 250)
    Acapulco (ATP 500)
    Indian Wells (Masters 1000)
    Barcelona (ATP 500)
    Madrid (Masters 1000)
    Rome (Masters 1000)
    Roland Garros (Grand Slam)

    including-

    Final at VTR Open
    Final at Monte Carlo

And that's after being gone for the game for 7 months. Are you comparing Nadal's 7-month hiatus to Federer's break after losing at Wimbledon?

I'm not a big Federer fan, but I have to say watching him play so badly and being so disconsolate makes me feel sorry for him :(
Still hope he can pull this off and gift us a final against my buddy Fabio :)

I don't see any improvement in his game with that racquet.

Me neither, if anything is shots have even less "punch", seems more loopy. It surely didn't add anything to his serve either. I don't see him sticking with that racquet for very long.

And to even come close to tying Nadal's performance this year, he'd have to win all 3 Masters 1000 titles, the US Open, and 2 other titles. He'd essentially have to go unbeaten for the rest of the year.

I'm waiting the tournament to end to state this. As this match is a close moment for it to happen, I have to agree.

I honestly haven't noticed any major change in his style. Forehand still shanky, backhand with no depth...

I thought he'll shank less with a bigger racquet. Seems like he shanks now more than ever.

You can really tell how low his confidence is in every single shot he makes.

He doesn't. In fact, he doesn't need to win a single title from now to the end of the year.

I think this "Decline" is due to motivation, confidence and his back....though if he wins this he get's to ANOTHER ATP final....we set high standards because that's what we've seen over the years.

I feel Fed needs this kind of matches in the smaller tournaments to get back into form. He should try to replicate the end of season performance ala 2011 to get a major in 2014. On the current form he has little to no chance at the USO.

I honestly never thought I would see the time when it would be a titanic struggle for Roger Federer to break the serve of a player like Delbonis.

Its not about the racquet. His confidence is low and needs some tough matches to get that motivation back.

lol he looks good because Federer has absolutely no power or depth on any of his shots. All of them land in or near the service box.

He has a lifetime contract with Wilson.

Fact is, Wilson sucks right now. They don't make any decent racquet anymore. Head and Babolat are way better racquets nowadays.
