So after 3 clay matches, the next Djokovic-Nadal match is on....clay! Colour me suprised!

Also, if Nadal wins he'll only trail Djokovic by 800 points in the race despite not having played the AO!

    The Nadal in 2.

I think you mean Cvac in straights. Nadal will win this final when hell freezes over. He's been beyond awful all tournament long. I think you already know that though, Monfed.

Novak is my fave of the two but this is Rafa's title. I'll be thrilled if a miracle occurs and Nole wins but I don't see that happening. I just want a decent match not like last year's.

Rafa still hasn't lost before final in 5 events played and is going for his 4th title of the year tomorrow btw. How impressive is that? AND his second master of the year. This could turn out to be his best season ever.
Novak is trying to get his first master title of the season. It is his 3rd M-C final vs Rafa. He lost the other 2. More luck this time or another Cincy scenario? If he won M-C, he would have won all 3 masters on clay and would be the only active player with Rafa to have done so.
IMO, there is currently no tougher challenge in tennis than to overcome Nadal in the final of his 2 pet events: M-C and RG. Herculean, titanic task. Hence exciting :)

To be fair, they played plenty on other surfaces as well (such as HC which suits Novak considerably more) and recently in IW Nadal was waiting in the final, it was Novak who failed to put away Delpo in SF.

It is 50:50 in my opinion. Djokovic is suddenly looking a lot better and Nadal not so much. That should bring about a shift in this equation.

It will be the biggest challenge for either player. Let's see what happens.

Absolutely, this rivalry is getting really interesting and Nadal is having a great start to the year. We'll see both players up the level. Yet, I still like seeing Nadal vs. Federer matches and hopefully we'll have more of those at majors as well. We'll see.

He played mediocre at Monte Carlo in the semis against Simon last year but beat Djokovic in the final. His match today has no relevance on tomorrow.

Then Cvac losing sets to Pico and Nieminen have no relevance, either. Nadal hasn't looked good this entire tournament. It will take a miracle for him to beat Cvac tomorrow.

I just don't understand how anybody picks Djokovic for this match. Obviously, anything can happen, but as far as probability goes... I just don't see it.

It's like Federer said in the post-match interview when he lost to Nadal in their most recent AO meeting: "I think he plays better against me than he does anyone else, and that's good for him." Nadal really ups his level against the top-3.

I'm hedging by picking Nadal in 3, but I really think this could easily be Nadal in 2. IMHO, this year Djokovic has not shown anything "special" which would make me think he can beat Nadal in this meeting.

Why don't you stop it, already?

I swear I wish we could meta-moderate to vote and ban posters. You really add nothing to the conversation. I mean absolutely zero. You generate nothing but waste and by-products that everyone else has to sift through in order for people to read anything remotely meaningful.

People can't even ignore you, because you keep getting replied to. So your written uselessness can't be avoided.

Seriously, if you can't contribute anything geniune... go get another hobby. Please. Do the rest of us a favor.

You're right in that only they can give us such showdowns, but as for them being wonderful, I'll agree if wonderful means:

Slugfest, baseline 99%, twenty shot rallies, little contrast.

Give me a Dimitrov match verses my twin with the hair any day.

I also like the fact that whoever wins tomorrow will have to do it the hard way: vs #1 or vs best clay courter ever. That's the way it should always be in sport ideally. No glory without the highest challenge. No shortcut.

If it's windy like today, Nadal will win pretty easily, something like 3 and 3; ND isn't a good wind player and will get discouraged easily.

But if the weather is ok, I give ND a decent chance; I think the talk of winning 9 in a row has gotten to Nadal; thus his near epic collapse against Tsonga.

    I picked Nadal in 3. Something like 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

I still can't believe Gasquet lost to Fognini.

Yeah that was lame but no regret, Gasquet would have lost to Djoko in straights too. Novak had one major hurdle on his way: Delpo but that hurdle blows hot and cold: shone in Rotterdam and IW. Was terrible in AO, Miami and another letdown in M-C.

Finally Nadal gets a player who likes long baseline rallies. This will allow Nadal the chance to find rhythm for the first time since the Indian Wells Final. Thank you Djokovic for giving Nadal exactly what he wants.

Nadal feels more comfortable against Djok. Nadal has played more matches against Djok than any other player. Tactically its the most predictable matchup on the ATP. As a viewer I'm grateful Nadal is playing Djok and not playing Dimi. Nadal has a better chance of thrashing Djok than he had of thrashing Dimi. Djok gives Nadal rhythm, because Nadal knows Djok is staying on the baseline most of the time.

Form, history and the last few matches they have played each other says this is a fairly comfortable Nadal win. I am not so sure though. I can see Novankle taking this in 3 actually. Not sure why. Just a feeling. Hope I am wrong.

Bookies have Nadal as fairly comfortable favourite too.

Comes down to Nadal's form. Here's what I've thought of Rafa right now vs his usual clay self and 2012:

Backhand : Very good. It has been solid all through IW and in the clay season. Great because it's his weakest shot.

Mental Strength/Tactics: Generally good. Similar to the past. Impressive against Baby Fed when Rafa was being comprehensively outplayed.

Forehand: Strange. Looked great in IW. He was stepping in and cranking the off-forehand, and going DTL as necessary to end rallies. In MC, however, the forehand has not been the usual weapon. Nadal is hesitant to pull the trigger down the line, and if he does makes an error. He's struggling to get depth and doesn't position himself in time to hit his off-forehand (weird for him). I can't understand how his forehand actually declined from hards to clay. He generally gets better as the season progresses.

Movement/Footwork: Decent. Definitely not as good as 2012 - but it's getting better. However he needs to raise it a notch against better players.

Serve: this is the most SHOCKING. I can't recall his serve looking that bad since almost forever. His first serves must be barely clearing 110 mph. He's just looking to put the ball in play and take it from there. Strange. Needs to be more offensive here.

To beat Djokovic - Nadal has to raise his game for sure. What he displayed against Tsonga and baby Fed - won't cut it. In particular he has to Serve BIGGER and take more chances on his forehand. Novak will slaughter the WTA serve he's throwing out right now. He also has to get more depth on his forehand and use the off-forehand more.

Good news is that the backhand looks SOLID and the forehand is something that Nadal usually improves as he rounds up his form. Very important match overall. Nadal hasn't played anyone of Djokovic's caliber since his return. Rafa's form will tell us whether he is prepared to challenge the big 3 this year and how his clay/grass season will look like. Novak is definitely the man to beat, and if Nadal loses on his home-turf - that puts more pressure on the Spaniard for rest of 2013.

Great post, agree with all of that. For me Djok is the slight favourite for tomorrow given the form of both players in the last couple of matches. That said, Djok had much easier opponents. Difficult match to call.

I agree. Hard match to call. If someone had asked me in IW, I would have definitely said Nadal would beat Djokovic. But IMO, in MC, Nadal hasn't played as well as he did in IW at any point.

That said, Nadal's capable of raising his level a couple of notches on clay. If he does that, he wins tomorrow. Failing that Djokovic prevails, I think. Very important match in the context of not only clay, but the whole season.

Not sure it is so important as RG which Nadal is more focused on rather than MC, Rome or Madrid. Also the weather this week hasn't really helped Rafa's game at all with heavy slow conditions thus his topspin isn't biting as it usually does.

As you say though, he is capable of turning it on and sweeping Djokovic aside, but something tells me he won't tomorrow and we will have a new champion.

I don't agree that tomorrow determines the rest of the clay season, no matter who wins. Rafa is still getting back to form. I think everyone was surprised he won IW, including Rafa.

Nadal definitely has the mental edge over Djokovic, because Nadal has won their last 3 meetings (Djokovic has to think back to 2011 to find a win over Nadal on clay) and also Nadal has won the last 8 years at Monte Carlo which gives him confidence in tight matches and conversely psyches out his opponents when they get close to the finish-line.

Why are people saying that Nadal almost had an epic meltdown?

He didn't even LOSE THE SET nor was he in any position close to defeat throughout the match.

He just got the breaker and dispatched Tsonga.
