If 1971 was the unforgettable year that Led Zepp got us closer than ever to heaven with his Stairways ( part of their unforgetabble Led Zep 4), it is also the year the tennis world got closer to heaven.A truly unique year, with so many all time greats fighting for the big titles with an astonishing diversity of play.It walsa slo the eyar WCT started off and changed tennis pro game for ever.

Rod Laver wins Rome, over Kodes, and loses the Dallas finals, to Rosewall
Ken Rosewall wins the AO agaisnt Ashe and Dallas, vs Laver, but gets beaten at the Wimbly semis by Newcombe
John Newcombe wins Wimbledon, with two consecutive wins over Rosewall and a classic five setter against Smith
Stan Smith wins US Open against Kodes, loses to Newcombe at Wimbledon and to Nastase at the Masters Final (Paris)
Ilie Nastase wins the Masters, against Smith, but gest beaten by Jan Kodes at the FO final...
and jan Kodes closes the circle of these " magniificient seven" band ( the best top 7 ever and forever) with his RG win over Nastase...a few weeks after his Rome defeat at Laver´s hands and a few months before Stan Smith defeats him at the Forest Hills final...

a wonderful cicle that makes up for the greatest ever single tennis year.I have also other favourite years.1958 and 1959, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1981,1985,1989, 1993, 1995 but this year is the historic peak of this game, in my very humble opinion.

Yes, this is the Golden year.We never got closer to heaven , thanks to Led Zepp and the " Magnificient Seven" ( and don´t forget great Orantes,Gimeno,Pilic,Franulovic,Richey,Gorman,Lutz,Riessen,Ralston,Drisdale,Taylor,Okker, Roche and other excelent players).

Does anybody have a better year and is this poster able to provide reasons?

1985 could be the best top ten year: Lendl,Mac,Connors,Wilander,Becker,Edberg,Cash,Noah,Gomez and Mecir.

    5 S&V vs 5 baseliners.Bruttal.
