Many of you will recall that Lendl got all bent out of shape at a ballgirl that got injured on the court in the Men's semifinal against Agassi.
That ballgirl was me! And I am looking for that footage - something nice to own and be able to show the kids - and I can't find it anywhere.
I could've sworn that was in 1988, the first year I was a ballgirl, but I've read out there that it was 1989 (Lendl and Agassi were in the SF both years).
Does ANYONE have that footage, including my 15 minutes of fame?
And by the way, I didn't collapse from heat exhaustion or anything like that (LOL). It was my knee - a torn meniscus.
If anyone could help me out here I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks!

Was it 3 sets or 4?

It was '89. Don't think the complete match is on youtube. Believe it was early in the match.

Yeah, the commentators thought you had heat exhaustion. and blasted Lendl for being more concerned with getting a 1st serve than the ballgirl limping off the court.

MrCLEAN - I totally don't remember how many sets it ended up being because I obviously didn't stay the whole match.

Moose - It was indeed early in the match. I was kind of a dodo. Instead of just stopping and asking the other ballboy to go get it, I insisted on limping to get the ball. Eventually one of the ballboys from the back picked me up and carried me over to the corner, where Nick Bollettieri was trying to console me, as I was crying from pain and just general embarrassment.
I have seen the footage on YouTube, and of course none of it includes "the incident".
    Thanks for your replies, though!

pc1 - Lendl got mad because it happened between his frist and second serve. I took too long to get off the court, and then he argued with the umpire to try to get his the serve back.

Well I assume you're fine now. Incidentally you were not a dodo. You were 15 and trying to do your job. That's admirable.

Indeed, I am all better. It took YEARS but it seems to have repaired itself. I just went to my 20th high school reunion, and that's the #1 thing people remembered about me. LOL

I guess it was memorable to them since you were on highlights all over the world and they knew you.

But the big question is...can you play tennis now? :)

Reason I was asking was to figure out what year, but it seems to be '89. I remember watching the match in college, but not your incident, now I'm kind of curious to see it myself.

Hello vitamine1031. I've just checked my DVDs of both matches and it's in the 1989 US Open semi final, with you stumbling on the court while running for the ball and then clutching your right knee over in the corner. It was in the fourth game of the first set. Agassi was leading 2-1 in the first set, after Agassi held in the third game after saving 2 break points and where there were 6 deuces. In the fourth game, Lendl went 0-40 down and came back to deuce, and saved a fourth break point. Agassi had another break point a few points later and that is where "the incident" happened. Lendl started arguing with the umpire after Agassi had broken him on that point to go 3-1 up, asking "how wasn't that an interruption?", complaining that you and the crowd's applause had put him off.

On many tennis dvd websites out there, no US Open matches are openly advertised because of USTA and Tennis Channel policy or something, so that's the reason you probably can't find the match listed. This is especially true if there are plenty of Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon matches listed. You have to contact the trader directly in order to get any US Open match.

    Both matches were 4 sets:

1988 US Open SF: Ivan Lendl def. Andre Agassi (4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4)
1989 US Open SF: Ivan Lendl def. Andre Agassi (7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1)

Lendl lost both finals in those years. Lost in 1988 to Wilander and lost in 1989 to Becker.

As I recall, when Becker won both Wimbledon and the USO in 1989, World Tennis Magazine rejected the ATP's ranking system and declared Becker the #1 ranked player on the cover of its year end issue.

I agree that Becker was the best player in 1989. He won Wimbledon, the US Open, the Davis Cup (with a simply dominating display), was runner-up of the Masters, a semi finalist at the French Open (probably his chance to win the tournament). Lendl would definitely have preferred Becker's 1989 to his own 1989.

First of all, as a 15-year-old girl, I was completely enthralled with Agassi - who was very nice, and apparently asked how I was doing after that match. And apparently, while I was away getting my knee X-rayed later that day, Lendl had come down to the medical room with a bag of stuff for me and to apologize. But I never got either from him. LOL

Martina had to be one of THE nicest tennis pros I ever encountered. At the top of my list in terms of niceness at the time were also McEnroe and Connors. Gabriela Sabatini was very nice as well.

There was nobody that I could say was a complete jerk in my experiences with them - well, except for the obvious! ;-)

I once got hit in the ribs by one of McEnroe's serves in practice before a doubles match. His partner was Woodforde at the time and I can't remember who they were getting ready to play. I could've sworn there were none of the players had any tennis balls left to use, so I was running to gather them up - just as Mac served! It was unexpected - I thought I got shot or something! I had a bruise of the outline of a tennis ball for a while there!

you were 15 at the time? you looked so tiny! but you had really big 1980s hair:)
    almost agassi like.

Mary Carillo said, "she's pretty," when they showed a close up of you!

    take any pictures with players?

Don't even know what to say about the hair!!! As I'm sure most people do, I look at my pics from back then and wonder, "What was I thinking?" My Mom used to call it a bird's nest. :)

And, yes, I was 15, and yes, I was and still am very tiny, at only 4'9" in height.

I do have pictures with some players. I also snapped a shot of Agassi as he was coming out onto the court for that very match! I gotta dig those out!

It really was such a memorable experience to have done that for 3 years. I got to meet so many players and other celebrities. One the coolest people I met was Wilt Chamberlain, who was always sitting in the press boxes (?) in his tank top and $1 Woolworth's flip-flops. I remember asking him to stand up for me - at 7'1", I was pretty much staring right into his crotch. LOL After that, whenever he saw saw me, he would say, "Hey, Shorty!"

I had thought I remembered the '88 match being a straight set afair, but I'm thinking of the Connors match w/ Agassi, not Lendl.

THAT was an amazing match! I didn't work it, but I was there watching it and it was awesome. I actually remember someone yelling out from the stands, "Come on, Jimmy, kick his ass! He's a punk, you're the legend!"

That's a funny story, and reinforces how hard some of those guys serve. I remember working a match on Court 16 in 85 I think. It might have been 86. I can't remember the names of the players involved, though one was black and had a huge serve, so I think it might have been Malvai Washington. Anyway, I was working the back corner in the ad court, and that player hit a huge serve that was called long. I actually stuck my hand out and caught it right off the bounce, but it was hit so hard it made me audibly wince in a tiny voice, saying "Ow." Evidently the court was packed in enough that people heard me, because a few of them laughed when I did that. I was mortified, because as ball kids we are supposed to be invisible.

    Glad you got your DVD!

doubt it was Washington, he played his 1st USO in '89.

maybe Chip Hooper? was known for his big serve.

Was it the tennis dvds dot net website you used, and has he got back to you? I ask because the guy who runs that website hasn't responded to my e-mails in the last week, including an order of 9 matches that I made, which is very unlike him. I just hope there isn't a technical problem with the e-mails.

Hey mustard. Do you know if he is selling legal copies? Surely matches are copyrighted. Can't just run a bootleg dvdr type service ?

I'm sure they're perfectly legal. I mean, the website is out in the open, after all. Many of these websites don't have US Open matches listed on the sites because of some bureaucracy involving the USTA showing US Open matches on the Tennis Channel, so clearly the authorities know of these sites. Only a handful of matches have been officially released onto video/DVD anyway, so it would be silly to keep all these other tennis matches locked in a vault just because the official authorities can't turn a profit at the expense of ordinary fans. There are matches on youtube, for example, which haven't been taken down. The ones that are, are nearly always US Open matches.

What I do know is that in my experience, he, and some other tennis dvd guys out there, are usually very prompt in their responses to e-mails and have suddenly gone rather quiet. I was just wondering if others are experiencing the same thing at the present time, because then we'll know if it's just applying to me or if it's more generalised.

Edit: He contacted me today (Saturday 26th May). There was some technical problem with his original e-mail reply and it got lost somewhere.

I used to see Odizor play once in a while here in Houston. He was the top player at the University of Houston for a while, with David Dowlen as the number two player for them. He was a every explosive player.

That's pretty cool, hope you weren't embarrassed like they suggested. Things happen.

Shifting gears, I think this was my favorite Andre look, the hair when it still looked cool, the neon yellow and blue racket, and of course, the denims!

No way. I liked his 1995 Australian Open look, when he finally got rid of that hair and wig. It was years overdue.

becker vs. derrick rostagno was 2nd round and probably the best match of that tournament. rostagno was 2 sets up and hat match point in the 4th-set-tie-bteaker when he got a net-cord-lob and unfortunately lost that match. since that match rostagno has been one of my very favourite players.

noah got to the quaters losing to eventually champion becker. on his way noah had a quarrel with amos mansdorf after he had said something harsh to noah´s sister rooting for her brother.

edberg lost a 4th-round-night-match to connors 62 63 61. the 2nd set became close because connors got a game penalty ;-)
