The middle 80´s were far, far and again far ahead.

Yugoslavians,Brasilians,Soviets,Canadians,Puerto Ricans,Italians,North Americans were far better.Greeks and Australians were more or less as good as now, and only France and Argentina are clearly better now.Spain is a bit better but not by much.

You also had excellent teeams from former Czeckoslovakia,Panama and Israel.

those years had much more talent in any position, specially down the middle. There were 15 or 20 centers back then much better than the best center of today.

the biggest factor is the game style of the 1992 NBA vs. today.

In 92 the rules weren't as strict. Alot more physical play. Today's players would think they were playing street ball.

In today's NBA, the whistle gets blown for everything.

The 92 team would simply rough up todays team.

    Exactly
As Xavier McDaniels said one day " this is a man's game"
Now it's only hipsters crying for hand check in defense and travelling without having the refs call anything

Anyone see the US team drop almost 50 points (and 11 3 pointers) in the first quarter today on Nigeria? It's idol worship to keep thinking there's a huge gap versus the 1992 team. They're different, more versatile, and (for the most part) more athletic this go around.

When was the last time there was such an awful display of Olympic sportsmanship as the USA continuously chucking up 3s in the second half of a blowout against a clearly overmatched opponent? Suppose the USA team went out to find some 9-year-olds to dunk on after the game?

The insecurity among the "men" of USA basketball is extraordinary.

The match vs Nigeria was a joke.US shooters (Durant,Bryant,Anthony) shoot alone, no defense there.

The true Dream Team would have gotten to 200 points

Thomas, it is understandable, he hated Jordan, whom he acussed to not let him in the 1992 team.

Dumars has never been anything else than Thomas " lieutennant" ( although a fantastic defender and sharp shooter)

It is ridiculous to take the Nigerian landslide as a measure of the greatness of a team. The 1992 team would have sat at the end of the first quarter and let the Globertrotters in...

Youre exactly right. Blowing away a horrible team doesnt expose greatness, being able to do it when all the pressure is on and the game is tied is when true greatness is exposed.

    Sincerely, Mike Jordan

Thanks Mike.Still waiting James or Bryant ( or Durant) to close up an extremely tough play off final like that against Stockey&Mailman like you did.John and Karl singlehandedly would have scored 100 points againts the Nigerian "Olympic" team ( even if they used 12 players, that wouldn´t be even noticieable)

The matcha gainst Lithuania tells it all.

Current " Dream " team has a 5-10 difference vs a major international team (Spain,Russia,Lithuania,Argentina) and around 15-20 points against a second class team (Australia,Germany,France,Serbia,Brasil,Croatia).

The true Dream team would take a 25 points lead vs a major international team, and more than 40 points lead vs second fiddle.

Nihgeria is not even a dessert.

USA would shut down Stockton and Magic, but can barely contain 5'10 Campazzo right now.

Coach K has USA playing like Duke. No post play and all 3pt shooting. Hopefully they won't run into Lehigh this tourney.

We'll see who plays defense in the 2nd half. Argentina doesn't have the firepower of team USA, but I think they play smarter.

USA disposes of Argentina. They need to wake up earlier. 5-0 and wins the group stage.

Keep things in perspective. They beat Argentina, arguably the 2nd best team in the world, by 30 points today. There is no clear advantage to the 1992 over this team's staring 5, and they will pose matchup issues for anyone.

They won bc Argentina lacked depth. Spain's still 2nd best, ARG isn't the same team that won Gold in 04, a bit older w/ less depth, but still hung w/ US through 1 half before running out of gas. Chandler (US only big man) had 4 fouls in 12 mins BTW. Imagine what would happen against Ewing & Robinson & Barkley, he'd foul out in the 1st half. And yes, that is a CLEAR advantage 92 team has over this years team. They would kill 2012 DT on the boards and inside.

Drolliver thinks both of those guys are overrated and couldnt play in todays game. Campazzo is much better than either Stockton or Magic, just ask anyone.

As I've mentioned before, it's unfair for the 2012 team when you compare how they fair against the international because the competition is much stiffer than in 1992.

There's a lot of foreign players currently playing in the NBA.

Lithuanias best player is Linas Kleiza and he comes off the bench for maybe the worst team in the NBA in the Toronto Raptors, yet the US team barely got by Lithuania so assuming the international teams are all better than in 92 is not correct.

It's not about one guy but the entire rosters play as a team. You really think team like Serbia, Canada, Spain, Brazil, France, Argentina, etc are worse than they were in 1992 ?? Hell no.

This is not to say 2012 team > 1992 team, but let's not ignore the international are MUCH better now.

Not at all.As I posted before, only Argentina,France and, by a little bit, Spain are now having a better national team than in the 1980´s or early 90´s.Canada was much better then, just as Lithuania,Croatia,Serbia,Italy,Puerto Rico,Czechkoslovakia. Also, Greece and Australia were more or less as good as they are now.Same for Germany, although I think the 1990 german team would have beaten no problem current German team ( yes, including Nowitzky).

No way international basketball has evolved. It has regressed. Not to mention that the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, powerhorses then, don´t exist anymore.

USA is shredding Spain's zone w/ 3s. Not sure why teams won't adjust since that's pretty much USA's game.
