1hbh - top of your strike zone

  1. waist level - typical weekend hack who can't handle anything higher

  2. chest level - somewhat useful 1hbh, perhaps with a more extreme grip

  3. shoulder level - that is a real 1hbh... please explain how you hit it.

  4. eye level or above - pros do that. TTW posters - no way.

    I picked the last one.

I can comfortably hit one handed backhands above head level.

    2 things.

    1. I am not saying that they are necessarily offensive shots but they are not weak floaters but high spinners.

    2. I use a SW grip, not an eastern backhand so the bottom of the hand (the side without the thumb) is leading.

I use a Continental grip on those, so a more Western grip is not necessary. It will make it easier for most, at the expense of making low balls more difficult.

I can see that I guess. But is that with topspin? I could see slice or a flat shot but top?

Maybe I need to dust off the conti. But just shadow swinging, I think you would be better off turning your arm around and hitting an extreme western. Though I think the "pro" continental would be better for that.

Yes, topspin high 1hbh. Don't see why you would be surprised. Most players did it that way for many years. Only recently have more extreme grips gotten in vogue.

All of the older guys with 1HBH that I play against can hit a topspin backhand though it's flattish and hard most of the time. Some can hit topspin on high backhands and some hit slice. One switches to a two-hander on high-backhands.
