So I'm playing 6.5 combo and I know that in our state (MS) we can have a point and a half difference between players during combo but I looked on another team's roster on tennis link and they have a 4.5 and 2.0 on the team.....are they allowed to play together???

    In our league, no.

    But . . .

Click on the name of the 2.0 player in TennisLink. It may show 3.0, even though it shows 2.0 on the roster. For some reason, the player's self-rate at 2.0 will stay on the roster, although an appeal to the proper level will only show when you click the player's name.

I know this because I was stunned to see a 2.0 man register on my 7.0 team. I thought, "Holy crap! I hope he's not gonna be my partner!"

I clicked on his name, and he came up as 3.5. Thank goodness!

The problem is if the person in question is actually 3.0 then they won't be able to play 6.5. Being a 2.0 is the only way a 4.5 could play.

Sounds like a end around to get the 4.5 and 2.0 to play together in this league.

Each state league has their own rules regarding combo. Our's for instance places no limit. The two must add up to no more than the combo level. :)

5.5 and 3.0 combinations are big fun at the 8.5 level.

Our state league's mixed is limited to no more than 1.0 difference.

Our limit is 1.0 difference for mixed and 1.5 difference for combo.

She is definitely rated a 2.0. I went and double checked :)

They haven't played together yet so I'm hoping that one of the three teams they play before us will notice how much of a point difference there is and will call them on it or find out if it is even allowed haha

In norcal, they just enforce an upper limit on a player's rating for a particular league, so a 4.5 wouldn't be allowed to play 6.5 regardless of the partner's rating. This has a slightly different effect than enforcing a "maximum gap", since a 4.0 would be allowed to partner with a 2.0 player.

    http://www.norcal.usta.com/Leagues-Pages/League_Page_Combo_Doubles/

The norcal page doesn't give any rationale for this rule (stating only that the "ideal" partnership is a .5 difference), though I actually would agree that it doesn't make sense for a 4.5 to be playing 6.5 level combo doubles.

Yep. South Carolina has no limit on the level difference for combo. So it depends on your district rules. And yes, 8.5 can end up with some interesting combinations. The team that won our local 8.5 league last year had a 5.5/3.0 pair and a 5.0/3.5 pair.

2.0 should be abolished. There are no leagues for 2.0 players, there is no such thing as a 2.0 computer rating, so why have that rating as an option?

    I don't understand USTA sometimes . . .

If she's a true beginner, she is a low 2.5.

I know, because I was one!

9.0 mixed & 9.5 combo can be interesting around us.

I have seen a 6.0 former college All-American cover 90% of the court while his 3.5 partner stood at the net trying not to get pegged. They won a lot.

    Another case in SC: a 5.5 team that includes a 4.0 and a 1.5.

i'd like to play 10.5 mixed dubs with caroline wozniacki. i'd be more than happy to sit back in the alleys or grab a chair 10 feet behind the baseline and let her work her magic in those yellow shorts and dress.

    1.5 -- ??? LOL.

I assume that means the player in question uses the wrong end of the racquet?

I would recommend any beginner start at the 3.0 level now after the mass bump ups last season and possibly another large number thats gonna get bumped up this year.. The 2.0 & 2.5 leagues should be abolished.. They are only used for mixed and combo now anyhow it seems so it makes it easier for captains to cheat with their self rates..
    Just an observation..
