It has been in Tuscon for as long as I can remember. Usually it is around October.

Arizona? That's funny, you'd think a huge gathering of Sandbaggers would be in an area more prone to flooding.

My friends just played the 2.5 league. Omg i swear everyone in the tourney was 3.0-3.5. Ridiculous sandbaggin.. I'm signing up for 3.0 to test the waters and get back into tennis condition, but jesus! There was a team from Roseville CA that all 3.0-3.5. They put their best guy with probably their weakest guy.

Roseville lost their first set and the guy just goes on a poaching and ripping rampage. It plain just didnt look fair. But my friends were probably around 3.0 anyways. They held up well, but lost out in a Coleman(?) style tiebreak.

but yeah, my team this year missed it by one match -- the other team was deeper and better...i should've played for the other team...haha, but 2 of my teammates are going back from our nationals team last year...good luck man! how's your team this year?

Here's an explanation of the Coman tiebreak in case you're curious.

    http://www.usta.com/Improve-Your-Game/Rules/Rules-and-Line-Calls/Tiebreakers/

Also, I didn't know 2.5 leagues existed. Gee whiz. Considering how easy it is to progress from a 2.5 to a 3.0, I would expect sandbagging to be unavoidable in 2.5 leagues, far more so than in other divisions--where I know it's also rampant for reasons besides unavoidability.

Alabama is sending another team from the Southern Section. That makes 2 of the last 3 years a team from Huntsville has made it.

Seriously? There are 2.5 leagues? How does one get bumped from a 2.5 to a 3.0 - consistently demonstrating the ability to hold the correct end of the racket?

Apologies to any 2.5 rated players who take offense to the above.

Believe they won it two years ago and lost in the finals of their Sectionals last year and cruised thru it this year. Should probably be one of the favorites to win it this year.

don't know what you guys are talking about having 4.0 kick serves into the stands lulz, but I played 4.5 nationals last year and the level was right on par for top 4.5 and low 5.0. Nationals is the best of the best for their respected level but perhaps maybe one or two players above the rest. Stop whining and make it to nationals.

"don't know what you guys are talking.... Stop whining and make it to nationals."

Many of us have no desire to play .5 to 1.0 below our actual levels just for the chance to play against other sandbaggers for the right to be national sandbagging champs.

To each his own though I guess.

i am going to tri level nationals as a 4.5, and i know at sectionals the ppl there were above 4.5 so i am expecting some sandbagging. but if everyone is sangbagging doesnt that kind of just make 4.5 a better level of play overall. i know around here the 4.5 leagues have a wide spectrum of players because the 5.0 league is basically non-existent.

first of all, play in nationals first before you say everyone is sandbagging.

I love how some people are so quick to blame the usta and sandbaggers for ruining the league and making it impossible for themselves to improve. its these people who make excuses and give up....OR even better get bumped down on purpose to win at 3.5

Our 4.5 league is so weird, there are really two types of 4.5s. 4.5a is a player who trained seriously some time in the past, they may not be training now. 4.5b is a rec player who has worked his way through the ranks, these players have never really trained seriously.

I don't know anything about any of the other regions, but Huntsville's Southern teams seem to have 4.0 Nationals down to a science.

^^^^ that is like the Florida 4.0 team going to Nationals. Play in Tampa area - 7 guys(I think 7 is the number) got bumped up. the funny part is the "self rating". One college player - 3 years Division One '94-'96. One player played at two separate colleges, 3rd player won the Florida State High School Title in 1990. They all self rated at 4.0

Based on the limited info provided, the division 1 player is improperly self-rated...that is, if he actually played any matches for the division 1 school.

The second player who played at two separate colleges, he may actually be properly self-rated...just depends on what level he played at and his age. NAIA, Division 2/3 36 years old or older can self-rate at 4.0 level.

Finally, the Florida State HS state champion in 1990...I'm sure he's over the age of 36 now given the year he won State and, if so, without having any Division 1 college experience, he is properly self-rated per the guidelines.

An amusing thing happened at the 3.0 Nationals this past weekend: a player was complaining to the scorekeeper desk, a player just got off a court and was complaining that the person that just beat him was no 3.0 because he himself was a 4.0 and was killed by his opponent. There is definitely a problem with the USTA rating system when you have players serving at 120mph @75%. There were many competitive matches, but there were definitely some players way above their "3.0" rating. It was too bad, but that's the system we have to deal with if we want to play USTA.

Heard that nearly 30 yrs ago. 4.0 in his mind. Our super seniors serve 120 mph 2nd serves with hip replacements and those are the ladies playing mxd doubles. It's tough all over.

See they dropped their second one as well. Looks like Southern's singles ringer got rung by another teams self-rate singles ringer himself in the second match today. Just think its really funny how many of these singles guys have close matches all season long, but then start crushing other self-rate ringers once they get to Nationals. Maybe the Mid-Atlantic player is unrelated to these other players, but a google search of this players name shows one player with the same name who played college and made the NCAA's in 1988 and then another player with the same name who was a 2 star recruit on tennisrecruiting.net two years ago, who had a sectional ranking and clearly would be unable to self-rate as a 4.0.

Takes more than one singles ringer to win a team match though. I have no idea on that one...don't konw him, but I just did my own quick search. California is not in the Mid-Atlantic! Do you know the Southern guy?

And the team score was 4-1. But they looked like they were incredible matches! And the guys I do know on that team...they've been working and grinding away for years, like many of us. Working hard and it paid off! Heck, one of those guys I met years ago at a local park just hitting randomly. We were both rated lower than we are now at the time, and we played a set of singles. It was...laughable at best!

Hey! Can you explain how there are two NJ teams? Is the state divided into two sections?

Yup, tomorrow's match will feature everyone's ringers for sure!

Again, I don't know the guy or not. Self-rates that destroy everyone are always going to be scrutinized. That aside, I do know that California is not the Mid-Atlantic. But I also know that people do move all over the country from cities where they played in high school to where they went to college and thereafter. I didn't go to college anywhere near where I grew up and I don't play in tennis leagues today where I grew up or went to college. Just because a kid may have played college or HS in california doesn't mean he couldn't have moved to DC years later.

The one name that came up (and again, I did a super quick search) looked like a current teaching pro in San Diego.

Again, I don't personally know him. But the guys I do know on there are just good players who work hard. Gives us hope, right? ;)

I think, NJ devided to north NJ which is in eastern ( all NY and north NJ ). Another is south NJ which is same group as PA.

The very northern tip of NJ is in the eastern section ... Most of Jersey in in the Middle States.

If you are willing to drive 2 hours for a match and live in the right spot you could play in 4 different districts within middle states and 2 different districts in the Eastern Section ... population density.

That sounds similar to NOVA...but we can just do different districts...have to go up to PA for a different section. But that's good to know if I ever move back near my family in PA!!!
