Thanks, dizzl. It's going to get harder now, though, a lot harder. We play SoCal in the semis. They look real good. And Southern totally destroyed their group. They look like the best team in group play anyway.

I have not done a full analysis, and who specifically plays and what the match-ups are will be a big factor in who wins the team match, but I have the average ratings for the top-8 players for each team as follows:

    Southern - 4.02
    NorCal - 4.09

    Middle States - 4.01
    SoCal - 4.01

So J_R_B, looks like you guys drew the best matchup you could.

I should stress again that I haven't done a full analysis, this doesn't include any of the matches at Nationals, and who plays and on which court can be the deciding factor, not just the average of your top-8 players' ratings. But in theory, NorCal has an advantage by the numbers.

Southern has been the best team here, although obviously, I don't know anything about who else was in their flight.

Kudos on winning your semi, and yes, you get to face Southern, looks like matches going on right now.

    Yes it is. Well done.

And Southern was tough. Adding in their playoff matches up through flight play at Nationals, their top-8 average was up to 4.11.

In the final, Southern won all the courts as follows:

    A 4.14 beat a 4.23 in a 3rd set TB
    A 3.94 beat a 3.98 in a 3rd set TB
    A 4.22/4.05 beat a 3.94/3.80 1 & 2
    A 4.30/4.04 beat a 4.00/3.67 2 & 1
    A 4.12/3.95 beat a 3.98/3.96 in a 3rd set TB

So they were able to easily win those matches where they had a big numbers advantage, and won the others in TBs where the ratings were close. Despite having a higher top-8 average, Southern could have lost it if those tie-breaks in the expected close matches just go the other way.

It's funny how close these ratings are. Two weeks before nationals, I had 3.94 & 4.00 play 3.98 & 3.96 (ie as close as possible in rating) in a practice match and the final score was 4-6 7-6 13-11.

I was on the Norcal team that lost to Southern 4-1 in the semis with two of our loses going to 3rd set TBs. So now I'm curious about how our ratings matched up, can you run the numbers for our match?
