The big question: will Fed tank because he's already qualified?

Going for Fed in 2 just because he switches it on at times like these.

Federer wins in 2 or 3 if he plays like he did versus Tipsy, loses in 3 if he plays like he did versus Ferrer.

So basically Del Potro has to win this match in straight sets to qualify otherwise it`s most likely Federer and Ferrer that go through. It sux on Ferrer if he wins 2 matches and doesn`t go through but that is a possibility.

As far as I'm concerned, this is where Fed's tournament starts. This is the first match Fed will play someone who can actually possibly offer some kind of resistance. And oh the irony, the match doesn't even count (for Fed)...

Maybe Fed should tank. His semifinal opponent will have an extra day of rest over him.

It not like Federer gonna give up. He will play as hard as if there was something on the line.

I'm saying Federer in 3. Delpo will take a set, but there are 200 ranking points on the line as well, so I don't see Fed tanking. Moreover he'll try his hardest just so Delpo won't possibly have some kind of mental edge over him.

If (big if) Federer indeed decides to throw away the match, Del Potro is almost sure to qualify isn't he?

Assuming he wins in 2 and Ferrer wins in 2 as well. You'd have Delpo(5/2), Federer(4/2) and Ferrer (4/3).

Doesn't seem fair to Ferrer, let's hope Federer goes for the win.

    Roger Federer in two sets..

I don't want a three setter. I would rather have Roger play two sets and save energy for sunday semifinal

It will be damn funny if 2 players from the "group of cake" make the final. Unlikely, I know, but it will be funny if it happens.

DelPotro in 2/3. Fed's got no sting in his groundstrokes and to make things worse is short on confidence as his FS% indicates.

Fed is gonna tank. Delpo in 2. That way Fed doesn't get tired, keeps his energy for the tough ones, avoids Murray in semi, sends Delpo to semi who will be a tougher opponent for Murray than Ferrer. It's all good for Fed except in terms of ranking points but that should come second to increasing his chances to win the event.

Nope, Fed is not going to tank. I just posted this video to you in the "It is in Djoke's hands" thread. It is a short clip of Fed saying he wants to beat Del Potro after his loss to him in Basel. He does not want to lose twice in a row to him. Here is the clip:

I disagree but I will cheer for Fed for once because I want the semis to be Murray/Fed, Djoko/whoever, so that there is more chance to have another Murray/Djoko thriller in the final. Go Fed!!!

    lolz @ Murray/Djoko thriller, it's a boring match..

Llodra - Isner Paris match in last week was a real thriller! 10000000 times better than Murray/Djoko matches

Well to each their own as they say. But Llodra is not playing and Isner is annoying with his serve, serve, serve, rinse and repeat style of play. Wasn't it at the USO though that Isner/Llodra played a thriller? (oh no sorry, it was Isner/Kohl, great match) I enjoyed that one. (also to me Djoko and Murray are the 2 best on hard currently).

If the miracle of the millenium happened and Tsonga qualified, Fed would NOT want to tank. He would want to crush Delpo and would be laughing all night at the idea of playing Tsonga in the semi, which would basically mean a free pass to the final.

Federer would not tank regardless. He never does. He said it clearly - "there is no substitution to the confidence a win gives you".

Are you suggesting that Federer lost the first set 2-6 instead of 3-6 to the USO champion and eventual WTF finalist because he "tanked", that he calculated the WTF math up to the game precision during the match and had absolute control over the score of a set, as if he was playing his puppet?

    You cannot be serious.

I know the article chose irony. I only quoted it to point to the incident itself. I have absolutely no doubt that Fed tanked that match.

Bleacherreport... That's one thing, for starters.

But seriously, veroniquem, you really punched yourself in the face with posting that specific article. Here's a couple of comments from that page; careful, the second one is from the writer:

    Edit: Oh...

    I guess that's ironic.
