I'm surprised to be the first to start a thread on the real American sports passion...I grew up on baseball but my first live football game converted me.

Anyway, Week 1 had some statement games, some impressive debuts and a couple of surprises. Niners in the NFC, Ravens in the AFC look very strong; RGIII doesn't look like a rookie, Peyton looks strong in his comeback; the Jets CAN score TDs when it counts.

Week 2 and Thursday night is a year-long proposition...the Pack must bounce back quickly or the dreaded 0-2 hole will have to be dug out from. Same for the Steelers...Gang Green invades the Ketchup Bottle.

    Thoughts and observations, please...

ravens-49ers is a possible superbowl if they stay healthy
my eagles didnt look too good offensively with 5 turnovers, 110 penatly yards, however their defense has now helped the birds when 5 straight games
falcons also looked really good, same with the bears too teams that could make noise in the nfc

If there is one thing I've learned these last few seasons, it is this:

Forget about the first half of the regular season. It's all about who is finishing strong at the end of it and who can bring momentum into the playoffs.

That said. If I look into my crystal ball....certainly it looks like the 49'ers are going to be a very tough team to beat this year.

I hope it aint 49'ers Ravens Superbowl. I hear enough about the Ravens as it is. The alst thing I need to see is 50 shirts in the bowling alley that say "Super Baugh 1" or some play on the Harbaugh's and the Super Bowl. Maybe I should just start making them now.

But with Flacco at the Helm Im sure they will lose in the playoffs again. I hope so becuase its really fun to talk smack to all the guys at the bowling alley if they happen to win the bowl.

Yeah, I can see a large market for BroBowl jerseys & t-shirts...half purple/half red (yuk!).

They were both one game away months ago and nothing seemed weaker in Week 1 but it's way too early to win a championship. However, you can lose a title on any down in any game (read: key injuries).

    r u saying they are SOB's???

I'm a Jets fan and was indeed surprised we jelled so well in Week 1 after our atrocious preseason. How much was due to the Bills? I guess we'll see in Blitzburgh on Sunday. It's a national game, 2nd part of the CBS doubleheader. My Viking boss better get his fanny back to work to relieve me at 4pm!

Has anyone run a non-betting weekly pool on this board? If there's enough interest and everybody agrees to post just once each week with all their picks, I'll play. I'm a little cramped on time and computer access to run it but it's an idea if someone wants to take the ball. I get in a local $5 game so it might help me focus more sharply before the Saturday deadline (no Thursday games are included).

I wouldn't get too excited. It was the Bills, the perennial AFC East cellar team. Words can't express my feelings towards the Bills after that game.

    1. Ryan PicksHatTrick... I'm sorry Fitzpatrick. My god is he bad. That pick to Cromartie... I mean what could he have possibly... I don't even know. 59mil for a pickle machine. Even sadder is that one of the few bright spots was that our O-Line played very well and he still threw 3 terrible picks.

    2. That "Vaunted" defense line. Marcell Dareus, Meatball Kyle Williams, and our 100mil dollar man super mario. No pressure, 0 sacks. Really? I know we didn't blitz but, c'mon with what we are paying those guys we should be able to get at least a little pressure with a 4 man rush ala the Giants. I never would've paid 100mil to a guy who had his best season 5 years ago and then he complains about the refs and not calling illegal hands to the face? **Keyshawn Voice** C'mon man! We gave you 100mil do something!

    3. Stephen Hill who I wanted the Bills to draft rnd2 this April shat all over us. Burned our #1 Gilmore on a double move.

    4. If we don't give CJ Spiller the ball all game next week, Chan should be fired. Last season was the same problem. Our best players are both RB's and we dont' use them enough.

Have I mentioned how bad Ryan PicksHatTrick is? mother of god. I can't even begin to think about what Tom Brady would do to this team.

    /end rant

    same old bills.

Bucs shut down Cam Newton and the Panthers crazy double team rushing to 10 total yards! Wow!

That WAS impressive! Until they sell out the Pirate Ship, I won't see the home games here in Orlando so I'm hoping Buc Fever strikes the Bay ASAP. The "O" has to kick in for it to happen...Freeman/Jackson has potential.

Yes they do. Should have capitalized in the red zone. Only the first game though, our offense could use some work but a very good showing for the D on the first game.

I'm thinking that the bills get #1 pick next year and take either Logan Thomas or Matt Barkley- its them or the Cards.

What a way to start the weekly Thursday schedule...da Bears vs Cheeseheads!

This is must win territory for the Pack...0-2 and a loss to a divisional foe is hard to overcome. The secondary will be tested...Cutler/Marshall reunion in Chitown is potentially lethal.

The Pack in a shootout 80-point-total type of game NFL Network will love!

No "O" slugfest but a much-needed win for the Pack. Man, if you told me the punter would match AR for TDs, I'm guessing da Bears win.

It's Philly. Crap years far outweigh good ones. It has been this way for all of our teams. Never stopped me from sitting in the 700 level for hundreds of Phillies games in the 80's/90's.

Nice win from the Texans totally kicking Jax a** today.....Texans D allowed less than 150 total yards. JJ Watt looking better each game.........Mario who??????

How about the Arizona Cardinals being 2 - 0 and holding on to a HUGE win over the Pats......that missed FG was karma. Nice to see Kolb (GO Coogs!) seem to nail down the starting job.

I was there... Pats were awful... I hope BB tears those guys a new one. You're right about the field goal, though. Gostkowski misses about one every two years, and I guess this was the one.

Seriously, please hire me as head coach for the bills.

Keep the ball out of that turnover machine Fitzpatrick hands
    and look what happens.

Spiller is in his second season; rookie RB Doug Martin is looking good for the Bucs...tough loss for them as Eli is evil in the 4th quarter again!

SF is looking strong...defense is stifling; Houston has crushed two young QB's...have to see them vs an elite before I can believe Mario won't be missed.

Good match-up on MNF...DirtyBirds are tough in the dome; Peyton will be tested; can Ryan take a big step up?

    Yep...

the last two were nail biters.

Its about time Vick has some protection (they still need to do a better job with this)! When he's on he takes QBing to new levels but he's inconsistent, like Venus Williams or Lew Hoad in tennis (at peak no one can't beat them, but they don't maintain their best form) :)

1st time in NFL history to win first 2 games by 1 point. LETS GO BIRDS, make that 6 in a row now.
defense looked very good, and I think the offense was good despite all the injuries and turnovers, a couple were flukes..
i agree, seems like vick is on the ground after every single play, what the hell! regardless they go into arizona this sunday with a better than average chance to go 3-0

good stat, last time the eagles were 2-0 to start the season they went to the superbowl..

9'er fan since 1957, when they played at KezarStadium.
Weak Olline, can open holes when the D rushes hard, but cannot push the line backwards.
    Kicking sure seems good.
Few teams lose much when they don't turn the ball over. That is a fragile way to win.
MarioM dropping two balls that hit his hands, and 4 other drops, shows another weakness.
DLine is equal to Detroit's, the best in the league.

What's up with the MannIN(T)g Brothers? They're both padding DBs' stat sheets. At least one knows how to complete a 4th quarter comeback!

They're front runners. When you're forced to pass, they can rush the passer as well as any front line.
As such, they're susceptible to traps and double teams, misdirection runs, and cutbacks. That's where the LB's are supposed to come in. But LB's get caught too close to the line of scrimmage, and often can't cover the holes because they can't get there with the big bodies flailing around in front of them.
9'ers have always had good misdirection runs, traps and cutback blocks. They seldom can push anyone backwards, as seen in the Detroit game. Most of the gains happenned because half the Detroit DLine had penetrated past the point of attack, and needed to recover and run down the field to chase down the RB's.
That's always been the cure for the pass rushing teams...ram it down their throats. But you gotta account for the LB's 3 yards behind scrimmage looking to cover gaps in the DLine.

Niners have spiritual mojo right now. Glorious tradition mixed with belief and new blood. Donte Wittner is crushing people. No one wants to play us.

If Im an AFC Team I would rather face the 9ers in the Bowl as oppesoed to Manning or Rogers.

We are still talking about Alex Smith here right? Can he be trsuted to win a SB?

If the 9ers play the Ravens in the Super Baugh then Ill take Smith over Flacco. But Flacco will never get to the SB. I think Smith is actually better than Flacco. What is wrong with me

Smith doesn't need to win any SuperBowls. He only needs not to lose one.
Running backs, special teams, big D, and short flare passes are supposed to get the 9'ers in. Time of possession and grinding down the defense.
They're going to need BrandonJacobs and the flea before mid season. Either MarioM bounces back and actually holds onto a ball, or the Giants were right to let him go.

Raiders fan here for those that don't know. So here goes:

We look terrible. The offense which looked dynamic at times last season looks pedestrian. DMC can't do anything under this zone blocking scheme. Losing to Miami wasn't totally unexpected, but still was a disappointment. I thought 8-8 would be doable, but now it seems we'll be 0-5 w/ Pitt, Den, and ATL on deck the next few weeks.

FIRE GREG KNAPP. He was awful the first time he was here, and is still awful. That and we have no cornerbacks, none.

I won't be surprised by a Panther victory tonight...the G-men are banged up and playing on the road for the first time on a short week. If they fall behind, Eli Houdini may not pull off another miracle. Panthers 27-21.

People forget how many calls the regular officials miss also. No replacement refs have made as big a blunder as Ed Hochuli did in that SD-Denver game and what about the ref screwing up the coin toss in the Steelers-Lions game on Thanksgiving?

^That's actually what I meant to type. Forgot the word "bad" Sorry.

"People forget how many bad calls the regular officials make"

So tired of every broadcaster and losing team complaining about the refs. They are not any worse than the regular guys from what I see.

Glad this one isn't included in my pool. Replacements stepped up and Carolina imploded...guess Week 2 explosion was courtesy of Saints porous defense. Big win for G-men as they get the extra time to get healthy for Week 4.

lol @ Cam doing his superman thing while being blown out and then completely blowing off Eli during the post game.

and props to Steve Smith for laying the smack down on Cam about sulking on the sidelines and not trying to learn what he was doing wrong.

It takes despairing losses to make a man, and every good QB has gone thru the ringer.
Before you can learn to win, you have to learn how to lose, and gain from it.
