I'm really wondering if beating FSU is going to be enough to get in. Huge match this Saturday for the Canes but it may not be enough.

So let's see what we've learned from last weekend's matches. USC and UCLA continue to destroy their opponents, but Sarmiento's 0,2 loss to Hamza is really head scratching. Virginia, despite my insistence on the possibility, did not come close to losing an ACC match and with Domijan playing as well as he is, with the depth they have, they are very well positioned to be repeat champs. Oklahoma regained their status as the #4 team with their win against Baylor. Ohio State is very vulnerable as it eked out a 4-3 win against Purdue. #2 and #3 are going to be very problematic for them in the round of sixteen in the NCAA's. Georgia, Texas, Baylor are all solid contenders while UNC looks to be the second best team in the ACC with Schnur back. And although Duke has definitely picked it up in the toughness department since the Redlicki suspension, it now appears that they simply don't have enough talent to match up with the top eight. (I think UNC wins their Sunday matchup.) Kentucky remains unpredictable, mainly because they're not a real deep and talented team; but if their squad all brought their A games they could upset a 5-8 seed. Illinois might have a chance at an upset to make the quarters. Texas A&M and Notre Dame are in the also ran category despite ND better play of late. What a wallop Andrews put on Aly of Miami, by the way.

Clemson match. About as close as they have come during the entire streak.

When Harrington served for the match against Domijan in the 2nd I wonder what the game score was in that service game. We'll probably never know.

I know that Domijan was not given credit for saving any match points in the write-ups of the match. Other than that, I have no idea. Regardless, Harrington serving for the match was as close to UVa losing in the ACC as we have seen since 2006.

I wonder if it was a tame 0-40 surrender or a case of Domijan stepping up or a long game with a few deuces. Clark is right, if he had saved match points it probably would have mentioned that.

If Harrington had held though it is not super clear because maybe after that Dom Maden or Luke Johnson feels more pressure and looses their grip on their own matches or something. We will never know.

addressing the rest of your points...

Sarmiento also lost to Cambier of Oregon recently. He will need to mold back into top form if USC wants to have any shot of winning it in May.

Oklahoma is a tough team to figure. They have real problems at 5 and 6 but make up for it with their strength everywhere else. I feel like Baylor may be a stronger "team" but OU has stronger individuals in certain spots and thats what made the difference in their match.

Your point about Duke losing some talent but gaining toughness is very accurate. It'll be interesting to see how the new found toughness will help them in May despite the lack of elite talent now.

right now i see uva as favourites. But UCLA / USC really will give them a fight
the other teams i see not with a bigger chance
    also not oklahoma

all other Top10 or Top12 teams can be in the quarterfinals, thats true, but no one from 13 to 16 could upset the top4 in my eyes, also i do not know what happens if Florida or Kentucky plays Ohio State in Sweet 16.

Now why did I forget Clemson? Other than being stupid and forgetful, the only explanation is that I expected ND, UNC, Duke or Wake to be one of the teams that might beat Virginia.

No there won't be any huge upsets. Minor, or upset due to injury maybe.

It was close, but two of UVA's top six Mitchell Frank and Mac Styslinger did not play because they were sick. Styslinger has been in and out of the singles lineup, but not having Frank at #2 where he would have won, made the final score closer than expected. With both guys playing, I expect it would have been 6-1 or maybe 7-0.

UVA has had a number of 4-3 wins during the streak and two were against Duke the previous two years when Cunha was playing for Duke.

The NCAA rankings and seedings are getting closer to being final. I think the key for UVA winning this year is to avoid UCLA in the QF's. Today's projected rankings have UVA at 4 and UCLA at 5, so it could happen. UCLA will play USC on Friday and likely again in the PAC 12 tourney, so it will likely move up if they win, but if they split who knows. UVA has only one ranked team left either UNC or Duke in the ACC tourney finals, so I doubt UVA can move to #3.

When the NCAA's are in Athens and the temperature is 90+ degrees and the men play QF, SF, and finals on three consecutive days, stamina and the QF match difficulty is crucial. When UVA and UCLA played in LA nearly every line went three sets and the match lasted about 4 hours, so if it happens again the winner may not have enough left for the last two days in similar heat. This is why I favor playing doubles after singles only at the NCAA's, so as not to make it an endurance contest and then have the best players on the finalists then jump into the individual event with the same heat.

I think both UCLA and UVA have the talent to win it all, unless they get worn out against each other. The other teams seem like long shots, but they do have a chance. We all know the semis and finals will be tough and likely long matches, so having an "easy" QF really helps.

Mac Styslinger plays James McGee in the Sarasota challenger today. Just a guess, Boland may be moving him in and out of the line up so he can play pro events and still not exceed his total number of college matches he can play during the year.

The NCAA Grand Slam! Ok for complete fun I did a draw as if the NCAA individual field was a grand slam. Seeded the top 32 and took the top 125 from the rankings. (127,127,128 were filled with the #1 player in D2, D3 and NAIA).

    here's the draw

if this was run like a grand slam with different days for the top half and bottom half and I was schedule maker the headliner schedule would look something like this...

    Main stadium court day 1:
    day session
    12 Pradella vs Kwiatkowski
    1 Thompson vs Lipman
    night session
    8 Hitzlik vs Romanowicz
    31 Pasha vs Saba

    stadium court #2 day 1:
    day session
    26 Proskura vs Tahir
    22 Andrews vs Monaghan
    night session
    11 Jomby vs Efferding
    4 Alcorta vs Clark

    main stadium day 2:
    day session
    2 Frank vs Styslinger
    5 Giron vs Diep
    night session
    3 Lenz vs Quiroz
    9 Sarmiento vs Webb

    stadium #2 day 2:
    day session
    29 Sarkissian vs Watson
    Glennon vs Hamza
    night session
    18 Scholtz vs Glasspool
    28 Galaeno vs Libietis

and then outlying courts take the rest of the matches

this would be a lot of fun

You are missing the top headliner of the whole individual tournament. Austin Smith of Georgia. Since most of the people in the stands are UGA fans, how could you leave out their best player. I believe Austin is going to make some noise at this years tournament. Regardless I guarantee you that he would be the one player that most people in attendance want to see.

well I'm not thinking of it as necessarily at UGA. Also his first round match is against ilya Ostinsev. Not really the biggest blockbuster match. But if he got a 2nd rounder vs Redlicki then it would certainly be on the top court.

can't say I'd give USC any chance if they don't get Farren back... P.Smith isn't using his players effectively ... he should take a lesson on B.Martin's playbook on how he has used Clay the past 3 years... and Novikov last year... P.S. was out coached ...

San Diego takes the doubles point over Pepperdine winning at 1 and 2 8-4 and 8-2. USD was also up 7-4 on 3 when they clinched the point. Winner is the WCC regular season champ but of course it only matters who wins next week in the conference tournament.

I have a soft spot for U San Diego, I used to go watch them early 90s as I lived near their campus. They had a very strong Peruvian mens singles player who was very highly ranked for a bit. Norriega I think.

Farren is entered in the Men's Open event at the Ojai tournament so I take that to mean he will not be playing for the team in the Pac-12 Championships--no way he'd be playing both events.

I wouldn't read too much into that - Robbie Bellamy and Nick Crystal are also entered as well. I believe the Open Tournament starts on Tuesday and USC and UCLA get double byes into the semis so they probably won't play until Friday or Saturday anyways.

Bellamy and Crystal aren't in the 'starting' line-up for USC, so they wouldn't play the Pac-12s anyway unless a few guys ahead of them got hurt. The qualifying for the Open starts Tuesday, the Pac-12 semi's are Friday, which is when the Open quarters are (Open semis are Sat and finals are Sun). Pac-12 finals are Saturday. So again, I don't think Farren will play both.

San Diego's win over Pepperdine was the 1st since 1989 and snapped Pepperdine's 76 match winning streak against WCC teams. In fact Pepperdine has never lost to anyone else in the conference except for USD.

Stanford with Huge momentum going into Pac-10 tourney and NCAA tournament. Cardinal a dark horse to win the NCAA championships.

Stanford wins the Big Slam 4-2 as Morrisseey beat McLachlan on 1, 1-6,6-3,6-4. Match on 5 was abandoned

Nostradamus (aka) Fedace called them Standford Cardinals years ago. This while professing to be very close to the team (former summer camper). This was around the same time he was claiming to be a physician based in California, Dallas and Chicago.

Not sure. Maybe he lived in Chcago at some time. He's also got some interest in SMU and TCU.

I'm going to Memphis/USF match tomorrow. Saw them play last Sun. Should be a heck of a final.

Farren opens up tomorrow morning with Alessandro Saglia who is 2015 2-star recruit then if he advances he'd play again tomorrow afternoon against either Ren Nakamura (19 yr old) who was a top 200 junior or Calle Hansen who played #1 and #2 for Pepperdine back in the early 2000s.

I saw the match--wasn't too impressed with Farren. Hansen is, afterall, a club pro these days and only plays a few local tournaments. Hansen actually should have won...he has his chances.
