The big news is not Basel, but only playing 14 matches. With such pruning, Basel had to give way to a Masters.

At this point in his career, it's mostly about money.

Swiss get publicity from Federer each day as a tennis player. They would be morons to excommunicate him.....lol!

Does it matter? A lot of players skip their home tournaments because of other priorities and scheduling.

So you're saying if you were rich you wouldn't still try to make more money?

I'll call your bluff on that.

Get off your high horse and stop acting like you wouldn't do the same thing. You're such a bitter troll it seems entirely likely you'd be like most humans and always want more.

He knows the most amount of money he's making is NOW. After he gets off this, it's history. I don't blame him for reasoning money as important but it's also likely the scheduling just isn't suitable for Basel.

I agree. It seems that his fortune is well above 300 mil USD. Probably enough to retire and have a comfortable life.

You know what? I need much less! ;-)

    Maybe it's about scheduling

There would be no need.. Again.. How much money do you need? How many steaks can you eat in one day? How many yachts does one need? Fed has made so much money, it should last him another lifetime.. At this point it should be about the love of the sport and making the fans (especially his home country happy to see him).. But nope... "Wahh.. I need another million to play in front of my home countrymen and make the, happy" .. For what????

You're type of mentality is whats wrong with the world today and why its a complete mess... GREED. THe rich just need to be richer..

How should money be important to him now exactly? Unless you have a severe drug habit and/or are a complete MORON, i see no reason how you could blow through all that money from 35 years of age to your death or even your kids entire lifetime

Especially you could find yourself a good consultant an invest that money wisely

You are on an Internet forum.

You have access to Internet and probably spare time, to be here.

Probably have a decent home too. Maybe a good phone and even a car.

You play (hopefully) tennis. One expensive hobby.

Take your "larger than life" attitude and low-middle class moaning somewhere else, will ya!

What kind of drug habit do you need to blow through several hundred million dollars? You would be dead long before your money runs out.

Not really. Nadal return$$$$$$$$$$ to Abu Dhabi, some dead-beat exho.

But maybe I can reason why Nadal is playing Abu Dhabi, that's his only chance to beat Murray and Djokovic when they won't be putting much effort in.

Nah, if Nadal was thinking like that, he would have just shown up to Monte Carlo. Then your boy Murray would get his butt kicked without Nadal expending much effort.

Monte Carlo? The same place an injured Murray won a set 6-2 vs Nadal on his home turf?

    Injured murray? Hahaha

As if Murray being injured was relevant. the guy hasn't lost in Monte Carlo for 8 years now, I think it's obvious a "fit" Murray won't get the job done either.

Forget MC, at Wimbledon Murray took one set combined from Nadal in their 3 meetings there and Nadal also beat him the last time they played at USO. Regarding Novak, Nadal was up a break in the 5th set against him in this year's AO final played on Novak's best surface.

Homeboy talking out of his *** as usual.

Well, the guy had injections on his elbow on and off court before and during the match. The match was delayed because of it.

I'm not entirely sure if you understand the scoring system, but if you win a set, that makes you a set closer to winning a match. Nadal's not been pushed to a final set in MC in however long it's been.

Fed shouldn't play Basel if they can't meet his demands, besides I'm quite sick of the Swiss DC team and the related administrators constantly hurling accusations at him for not playing DC and what not.

In short, Wawrinka needs to shut up.

He may end up adding a tournament or two in the end, and I think there's a good chance he'll still play Basel. Regardless, I really fancy that schedule. Compact tournaments with plenty of time to rest and practice in between. Judging from some of the interviews of him towards the end of this season, he definitely wants to practice a bit more next year.

Federer is doing the right thing - let see who cracks first - Fed or the tournament organizers?:)

Besides, playing Basel at the cost of a Masters (let's not fool ourselves, there's no way Federer does well in all 3 if they're played in consecutive weeks) is just dumb.

Lol no way, I highly doubt he loves his hometown that much, to skip a GS for it .

He may still play Basel, but I certainly wouldn't say it's definite, from his interviews there definitely seemed as if something was going on in the background. Then the whole press leak about the money story which I think we can safely say would have pissed Roger off (remember he keeps his business matters and those of the ATP out the press).

??? I spend about $10/day for my food, and $300/month for household utilities and maintenance. Monthly I spend around $1,000/month, so I can live 100 years basically with a million dollars. How is that not a lifetime??

Really? Where do you live?! Sounds pretty good!

I'm guessing that's just on you though right? I was thinking more along the lines of having a family as well, and then the costs kinda goes up a fair bit :) (we are talking a lifetime afterall, doubt anyone would want to be single for that long )

You cannot complain about the money demand of anyone. His needs and, even if it's purely only a wish, it's his choice.

I'm pretty sure he will play, but the other roger (roger brennwald, tournament director) is an idiot. he hasn't got the best image and I've heard he gave it away already with many sponsors and provokes trouble with the city etc.

Would've been nice to see Federer win Miami one more time, as it's been so long (2006). Still, probably for the best. The high bounces make it a real long shot. Rotterdam + Dubai = winning Miami.

I thought everyone knew about this, read about it the other day.

Fed gets paid $500k tax free for the event. He wants $2m. The Swiss people are pissed at him.

The idea is that Basil is no tourney without Fed, so he can hold them hostage so to speak. The promoters said "We'll give it to him if we can get it, clearly we want him to play".

Fed denied it was about money saying he could just make it up in Asia, but it's a pretty clear picture. I'm all for guys making as much as they can, kind of dissappointing, even though it's none of my business, for him to do that.

You are confused, you forget built in Government inflation, something no one talked about in the recent elections.

One million dollars will be worth less than $100k in buying power in 100 years. 100 years ago 100 dollars had the buying power today of $3.46. So if you had $100.00, took a time machine to today, you couldn't buy a good hamburger or a gallon of gas.

People don't understand this, yet they vote!

I love the word probably in this haha.

If you had 300 million USD in the bank, you would be making 100,000 USD a week in interest alone easy, even if you were on a low interest rate and were being taxed at 50%, which you wouldn't be, other than by choice, if you had this amount of money.

Federer didn't actually say his scheduling decisions are determined by money, that's just coming from people on this forum who have no factual knowledge about Federer's motivation. It's called speculation.

I doubt very much that Federer is motivated by money at this stage, but on principle he will still expect to get paid his 'fair' share for his services. After all, he's not a mug.

His published schedule looks light enough that it's likely he's leaving gaps so he can add a few more if he's feeling up to it or on course with his fitness/form plans for the season.

Better to be a surprise addition than a disappointing withdrawal imo.
