That's how a suicide pool works, mike. Then, one hot team has a bad day and takes everyone down with them.

i don't follow - you're aware of what i'm talking about above, right??? - namely, letting people change a pick that has already been proven wrong???

that's how a suicide pool works?

i'm more familiar with NFL style where each week is independent so this isn't an issue, so who knows what is typical for tournie style, but seems odd to me (only affected one or two folks looking back i think anyway, and not like i put money in, so whatever, just my 2 cents like i said)

Come on, man. TopDawg's rules clearly state that picks aren't locked in until each round starts. I know you fancy yourself as smarter than everyone else, but people picked 2nd round matches based on the assumption that they'd get through the first round, and may not have the time to reevaluate due to the quick turnaround.

That said, kudos for you for trashing the SEC for being overrated all year. Based on today's results, you were spot on. Unfortunately, in ended up biting you in the *ss in this pool.

fair enough, that's somewhat logical at least to say that they were just using those teams as holding spots in case they forgot to come back - anyway, not a competition i'm a part of anymore, so if those still in are fine with it fantastico

haha, i know, it was clear the SEC was insanely overrated all year (i shouldn't even get credit for that realization), but i didn't know they were this bad - glad Duke played in a conference with a couple teams they could potentially lose to (UVA, WF) rather than the mess that the SEC is with one of their better teams not even being able to get by an unranked joke opponent at home

I thought you were a little unfair or incorrect with your trashing of the SEC, but it looks like you were spot on there. Let's see how many get picked off tomorrow. I wouldn't be surprised if it was anywhere from two to seven teams left.

No sympathy for someone who relied on SEC teams living up to their ranking in two straight rounds haha, but yes bold first round

That's informative, but you are not even part of this contest. You cannot join in the round of 16. Another Nostradamus gem.

Have to gamble. QF: Pepperdine. Saving up my Virginia and UCLA picks, and honestly don't know how to pick the USC-OSU match. Not terribly confident in Pepperdine, but I have to pick someone in this round!

Yeah I have a tough choice in the next round, too, Clark if I am going to be able to field who I want in the finals. Either USC or OSU which is definitely a tight match.

Well, we are going to have some of us eliminated for sure in this round. Three picked Georgia and two picked Pepperdine; three picked Ohio State and one picked USC. Two Picked UCLA, none picked Duke. No one picked UVa or Tennessee match. A minimum of three of us will be eliminated, and a maximum of eight, although that is highly unlikely (although any of those upsets could happen, it is unlikely that all three of Duke, USC, and Pepperdine would win at once, eliminating eight of us).

Some schools like Ohio State, UCLA, and Stanford are still in school because they are on the quarter system. They have about a month left. Most other schools have completed finals already and will travel home once their seasons end.

Hypothetical question, since this often comes up in our NFL elimination pools, and I'm not sure if there's an accepted protocol, so interested in getting some different interpretations.

For simplicity's sake, let's say there are just two competitors left going into the semis - mikej and TopDawg. mikej picks Virginia, not because they are the obvious favorite, but because he despises the SEC more than his worst enemy. TopDawg takes UCLA. UVA and UCLA both win, so the two players advance, but mikej has already picked UCLA, so he doesn't have anyone left to pick. TopDawg has Virginia, but they get knocked off in the final. Does TopDawg win just because he had a pick left, but got it wrong, or does the $1,000 pool get split since they both advanced with correct picks through the same round?

Good question. If money was involved then in my opinion the 2 would share it since they both had the same number of correct picks but i could see the argument that the one that still had a pick left should get a bigger share since they at least had a chance to win.
