Relax comfortable 5-2 while rewarding Cunha with a break for his undefeated dual match streak this season, dudes picked it up to win third sets 6-1 and 6-0 when the match became even a slight concern

Scholtz just retired down 6-0. Got to wonder if there is a rule against something like this - putting someone on the court especially at 1 that isn't physically able to compete just so spots 2-6 are kept in order for the rest of the team.

I don't know, but my guess is there must be a 1 set type of rule. If he's going to take one for the team, he has to at least suffer through 6 games. Not having seen the level of play, it is hard to judge what may have happened there.

    No such rule. No way.

Who's going to make that subjective judgment of who is healthy to compete?

But is it pretty shady from ole miss - of course

My pick came true though. Spur did play one of his inspired matches.

Acutally, there is a rule against putting someone on the court that the coach knows cannot complete a match, but it is too subjective to enforce. Someone could protest a match, and then a subjective decision has to be made about the protest.

yeah, guess i should've clarified, i didn't take the time to see if someone had bothered to put such a rule on the books, since it's just 100% impractical even if it's in writing somewhere

it's not like someone even has to play for a set like was done today which lets people see that competing / completing match wasn't realistic - guy can just hit his first serve of the match, grab his shoulder, and yell in pain

if a coach wants to sacrifice a player who when healthy belongs at that spot in a lineup, it can be done without fail

4 teams just outside of the tournament zone got big wins this weekend. Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Louisville and Memphis.

Mississippi St/Florida comes down to #6 singles. Dumont up a break. LSU giving Tennessee a good match going to come down to a few 3rd sets. Ole Miss/South Carolina going to come down to a few 3rd sets.

personally i'm cheering for all the higher-ranked teams, for the sake of the ITA rankings

if any more upsets happen, the computer will explode killing multiple ITA-employed civilians due to an inability to figure out how to fit any more SEC teams at the top of the rankings

Pinheiro blew a 5-2 lead for South Carolina and lost 7-5. Another tough loss for the Gamecocks

You wish does not come true today.

#46 Memphis Men def. #24 VCU 4-3 in Richmond, VA.
Memphis def. Mich. St. earlier in the year who beat #14 Vandy.

#36 Memphis Lady Tigers def. #21 Notre Dame #4-3 in South Bend, IN.
Lady Tigers have a win over #16 Virginia who just beat #1 UNC last week.

    but congrats!

Ok, I'm officially a UVA fan now. It will be fun watching your watered down SEC teams get their asses handed to them by UVA, Duke, UCLA and USC when in matters most.

    Cheers

fair enough - i'll pipe down now - clearly feeling a little feisty tonight

still, don't understand people that don't follow conversations and randomly quote people out of context

if you want to give memphis some props, do so without randomly quoting me from a discussion of SEC matchups, doesn't make sense

No I understood the conversation. I agreed with you with the SEC teams. The lower ranked teams winning just continues the circle jerk of SEC results meaning no team ever falls in the rankings.

haha well you know it has to do with Duke basketball more than tennis, kinda an imbed arrogance that gets the whole conference mad!

Mikey JJ is scared of the SEC. He knows his Duke boys would get flayed alive each week. He likes when his team gets to play Boston College, not go to the Dawg Pound.

a true enough statement, but it goes both ways

when every conference team you lose to (except UNC, most of the time, since they have some pride) rushes the floor and their fans bug you for months about "hey, remember the time we beat you this year, how'd you like that?" - you get feisty with your responses

i'd love to see duke and UGA have a home and home series like they have had with tennessee in recent years

yep, the guys would pick up some losses in athens, but some wins too

I don't think we are giving enough consideration of Ohio State as a serious national title contender. They came within a tiebreak of beating UVA and can lay a smack down on anyone as seen by their pounding of a hot Minnesota team.

They just seem to flub every year. I think they are very strong in doubles, but have some weaknesses in singles. I consider McCarthy to be a very weak #3, while I believe Kobelt loses some of his effectiveness going from indoors to outdoors. On the other end, I don't think Callahan or Diaz has really been tested that much this year.

I would agree. I think double and top 2 of the line-up, they are about as competitive as it gets. 3-6 are where they need one stronger and more solid player to get that 1 more win against an elite team like UCLA, USC, Duke or Virginia.

I would disagree on McCarthy as a weak #3, so far this year he is 20-2, and 14-0 over his last stretch. His ranking has rocketed upwards this spring with some strong wins vs. ranked opponents.
Devin is a senior and some lights have started to turn on for him, he has not outwardly demonstrated the meltdowns that were part of his game in previous years.
Ilie Van Engelen was at #4 last year but hasn't been able to crack the Buckeye lineup this year.
Kobelt's game has improved rapidly from last year, a strong fall season (ranked #1 by ITA) but you are probably accurate in your assessment of his effectiveness being diminished as he moves outdoors.
Rola at #1 is a stud, the anchor and undefeated on the year. Had a tough win vs. Rossi of UK, but on any given day will beat anyone on any lineup in the NCAA.
The transition outdoors has always been a challenge for the Buckeyes, (and most northern schools who seem to underperform at the nationals.)
Connor Smith is #4 on the Buckeye lineup, he has a #43 ITA ranking, a 20-3 record in dual matches, 28-6 overall.
Freshman Chris Diaz is #5, and has earned an ITA ranking of #59 and a 25-4 record overall.
At #6, two Buckeyes have split time with Freshman Constantin Christ, holding a 13-0 dual match record. Soph Hunter Callahan is 13-2.
For 2013, two 4-3 losses are on the Buckeye record of 24-2, one is a 4-3 loss at the ITA indoors vs. UVa, the other was at their first outdoor contest at Texas A&M.
The Bucks do have the longest home win streak in all NCAA sports, 166 straight matches.
The decline of the Big 10 conference as a tennis power is concerning. Buckeyes only have B1G opponents left on their schedule, and will probably not face any more top 25 teams this year until they get to the NCAA tournament, so as they did last year will probably slip again in the ITA computer rankings to #6 or #7.

11 of the top 22 SEC teams.
Kentucky drops 0 spots for losing to Vanderbilt.
    Georgia jumps USC
Michigan State rises only 1 spot for beating a team 20 spots higher than them
Clemson drops 6 spots for losing to the 9th ranked team
Ole Miss rises a spot for losing to Florida

    what exactly is going on?
