You know, I don't get the general hatred towards Berdych here. He's obviously not a saint, but is Nadal, is Djokovic,...? I personally love his arrogance, it's so refreshing.
And I really don't get the general love for Gulbis! The guy is either hit a winner or miss. No in-beteen, no use of any brain, no use of any smart tactics. And that forehand looks hella weird, did he change it lately?

Points are allocated for progress into a tournament, rather than who you beat. So yes, less points because it's a 250 rather than a GS, but opposition quality isnt' a factor.

Is Berdych having flashbacks yet from when Gulbis smashed him at Wimbledon? lol

ok thanks. Though obviously for the players confidence it's nicer to beat a higher ranked player, so that's why I feel gulbis is more motivated in this match, I think.

Playing 'Chain of fools' on the background? And I thought they played the currently most popular songs in all tournaments...

gulbis and berdych actually seem to have quite a similar playing style - that is - clubbing it every time, although gulbis I think has more natural talent, but that's let down by his inconsistency and his ability to accurately know when to hit the winning shot.

I kinda like Gulbis' forehand. he seems to have a western grip, but is able to hit through the ball with a lot of volume...

i don't know what his non-racquet arm is doing though.

Gulbis goes for the big forehand and is broken!

I tend to disagree. They're both pretty offensive of course, but Berdych is so much more consistent and smart, Gulbis is just completely brainless.

I also disagree on the talent issue, as always. I don't even think you can 'see' talent anyway, I find it a very much overrated concept.
But even if I was able to 'see' talent, I would say Gulbis' strokes in general look very forced (in particular that awful-looking forehand). Berdych's strokes are a lot smoother IMO.

And Berdych just won the first set. Hurray!

he needs to find a way to break back... and soon.

i think he might as well try to chip and charge on one of these return points. might surprise Berdych.

What a match. Looks like Gulbis is serious this year. Very good fight. Probably will regret not going for broke on that last forehand.
