I don't think Federer wanted to leave early/didn't care. He said so much in his presser, that he wanted to play more and stay longer. He just got outplayed by a better opponent on the day, it happens.

So why did grandpa tank this one ?

    (a) To say 'thank you' to Benny for Wimbledon last year
    (b) Was scared of getting destroyed by Baby Fed in the final
    (c) To show solidarity with his BFF who lost to Zeballos on clay

Looks like Delpo is the favorite to win this but would love to see Benny pick up the title here, however unlikely it is.

dimitrov is a non-issue for federer (or any top 10 player really)... nike want to turn him into something special brand-wise, but his tennis is several levels below top 20 players, not to mention federer.

Roger has failed to makes semis of at least one slam in each of the last 3 seasons (since the amazing semi streak ended).

It is pretty warm in Ahoy (the tennis hall). Maybe that could be the reason?

nope... Benneteau usually gives him trouble as he is an aggressive all court player.

Assume when Delpo and Dimi kick off later we'll be allowed to stop talking about Rog and Ralph?

Maybe now you'll learn that you can't depend on Federer for anything. I remember there being a poll on the ATP's website that asked the public who they'd have play for their life, and guess who won it? Rafael NADAL. :p

Dimi has fast feet, but also kinda sloppy. he's constantly taking extra steps/movements when unnecessary...

haha even the commentators keep bringing up federer. HELLO! he's not playing today...

Del Potro keeping it real, let's see if Grigor can handle a top 10 player.

Very high quality first set. One moment of a lapse in concentration cost Dimi. Delpo's serve irresistible, as was his power. Dimi's defence and creativity have been a joy.

Grigor should slice his backhand more to stay in the point for longer; he's not hitting his drive/topspin backhand well today.

also, is del potro using federer's old stick?

Dmitrov has to defeat Delpo because there no way in heck that Benneteau can beat him if he gets to the finals. Sure want Benny to win that first ATP tournament. Feel sorry for the guy. Didn't know he lost 7 finals already and never won an ATP tournament. May the Lord have mercy on him.

delpo is using his own stick but still with a kfactor paintjob because he refuses to change to the blx paintjob. He only has 2 sticks left I think. Go the the Pro Gear forum to find out more.

Saturday's marquee match is Simon-Benneteau? That's unfortunate for the ticket holders.

Delpo should cruise to the title now.

delpo's fortunes usually follow his serve, and his serve hasn't been broken all week

    benneteau he's never played.
h2h w/simon is 3-2, and the most recent of those times was London 2012, which was won by delpo.

del to serve for the match

Game set and match... Del Potro wins 6-4, 6-4.

I really hope Benneteau makes it to play against him, should be a fabulous match.

Flawless from JMdP, not especially spectacular, just ruthlessly efficient and consistent.

Dimitrov is lovely to watch, just made a couple of mistakes and lost concentration and delPots made him pay - positives for both players in that match

agreed .... benny could definitely be tricky for delpo b/c of his excellent net game .... sure, simon knows how to beat benny and might do so in four hours or so (that is, their match starts in 4 hrs), but like you I hope it's benny who prevails, even tho I like gilles a lot.

How can he be #1 "soon" if Del Potro, the number 7, can beat him this handily? The current top 10 isn't going to go away as easy as that, especially not the top 5.

I'll be disappointed if Del Potro loses the final (although a bit less disappointed if he faces Benneteau than if he faces Simon). I'm excited for him to win his 14th tour-level title and hope he can carry some good form into the Masters swing coming up.

I can't see Simon winning today at all. He's playing his usual pusher's tennis all week, and Benneteau is killing the ball, and being very aggressive.

    has teh match started already?!

anyway, i think simon's pushing might force too many errors from benenteau and might grind him down physically... i want Benneteau to win though. should be interesting to see if he'll try to come in and end points quickly, or try to hit through Simon. can't see him out-grinding him.
