Has anyone been to the Portugal Open (formerly Estoril Open)? My wife has decided that we should go to Portugal this year and take in a couple of days at the Open, plus sightseeing. I'm trying to decide whether I should rent a car, or rely on public transportation, plus which days to go to the Open. We definitely won't be there for the finals, unless we win the lottery between now and then and don't have to get back to work. Any experiences would be appreciated.

Coincidentally, my wife suggested the same trip.

If you go, stay at my brother James' and his wife's B&B /Inn north of Cascais. He's a huge tennis fan and player.

In case you didn't know, it looks like the Portugal Open might be cancelled this year.

Any source for this? The web site is still up, but I do notice that it doesn't have anything other than dates for the 2014 tournament.

Hi, i am portuguese and live in portugal. I have been going to the open every year, almost, since 1994. Its a small but very nice tournament. With sime good players at times. We have had federer, nalbandian, dafin, djokovic, gasquet, robredo, coria, davydenko, moya, kuerten, tsonga, benneatau, ferrer, .. Lots of great players over the years. Its a sunny country so you can appreciate the nice food and local beaches.

This year there have been rumors of a decreasing budget from the tennis federation and the government and main sponsors, but that talk happens almost every year, so, i would bet the tournament will go on.
Where do you live? A good option would also be the madrid masters 1000. I have also been there and its amazing

I live in the US, my wife and I are already booked to stay in Lisbon that week. So, if the tournament happens we'll attend a couple of days, if not, we'll just do more sightseeing. My wife doesn't play, but I think she would be more disappointed than I would be if the tournament doesn't happen.

My wife and I are planning to attend too, but can't seem to find ticket info. The web site (http://en.portugalopen.pt/) shows the dates in 2014, but has ticket info only for 2013.

Any info about where to stay in Madrid that would either be near the tourney site, or near to public transport that would get us there easily, would be appreciated. We've never been to Madrid and are looking forward to it. Thanks.

There has been some talk about the possibility that the tournament wouldn't happen this year. However, just today they announced the tournament promoters were able to come up with the money, so I guess the tickets will be on sale pretty soon now that we know for sure the tournament will happen.

In Madrid I stayed at the Maria Elena Palace Hotel. Nice and not very expensive. its a short trip via subway to the tournament site.
