The Vancouver Challenger is loaded with the young Aussies...JP Smith faces Baghdatis, Thanasi faces Jimmy Wang, Thompson and Saville face two Japanese players (Daniel and Nishioka) and Matt Reid gets Daniel Evans.

    Good luck to all!

Welcome to the world of Don Kikiote...tilter at imaginary windmills scattered throughout the plains of TTW. Go to O&E for a more thorough taste of his genius.

If you read my posts at Odss&Ends, you can see I like to offer the opinion and a way out for counter opinions...:)

Only that minds need to be open up enough with no restraint.

Honestly, I have no idea what exactly you're trying to say here. "offer the opinion and a way out for counter opinions". Counter opinions to what? Your opinion? And what is exactly your opinion here?

In your post, it sounds an awful lot like you have a problem with immigrants, and that you don't like the fact that those Australian players happen to have a non-WASP heritage (personally I think the term WASP is moronic and very, very much outdated, but okay...).
What's exactly wrong with players who happen to have Greek or other European, Asian, African heritage, but grew up in and identify with Australia, even play for Australia?

If you don't have a problem with the (number of) immigrants in Australia, then you surely should think about how you phrase comments.

Back on topic...Ducky lost in straights (3&6) while Groth has split sets with Sela but is down a break in the third.

It's good for the local game that the results are starting to happen. I still find most of them pretty unlikeable.

Not a great day for Aussies, Groth Ducky and Tomic all out and another Aussie (Hewitt or matosevic) guaranteed to lose as well.

I was scared for Tomic...Istomin is a quality player and I think the change from high altitude is not always an easy transition.

Also, not good news out in Vancouver...Saville pulled out before 1R.

Kokki is up a set but down a break in the second.

Kokki comes back from 0-3 to win 6-4 and take out #2 seed Wang. Big serving induced a lot of errors. Saw a live stream...the link is on the thread Nostradamus started.

JP takes the second set vs Baggie 7-5, fighting off 4 BPs at 4-4. Good tennis!

JP drops serve after breaking at 4-5 and loses 5-7 in the third. Meanwhile, Reid and Thompson split sets in their matches but play was suspended due to darkness...only one court with lights???

Reid went down too, 5-7 in the third. It's been a rough 24 hours here and in Washington. At least Kokki and Hewitt stay alive. Sorry if I lost track of any other survivors.

Nice win for Thanasi as he sends Rik De Voest into retirement in a tough 3-setter. Gotta clean up the DFs (6 of them) which brought his points held on 2nd balls down below 50%. Plays Ward next.

Hewitt probably should have taken a set off of Raonic but all credit to that serve of his.

He has to button up some of his weapons first. There's a lot of potential there but right now it's one match, one opponent at a time. Ward could be difficult.

Thanasi went cross-country for the qualies...no problem with an easy win over a WC. Ducky also advanced easily.

Saw the results/draw and am still perplexed by what happened to Mad Dog???

Anyway looks like some great match ups. If Kygrios makes it through the first round, the match against Murray should be a cracker.

Thankfully we are getting it live on pay TV here in Australia but the 1am start means I'll be recording a lot of it.

Man, I hope Thanasi can keep his momentum through the rain delay...a golden opportunity to crash the party with a big upset!

It will be a great confidence boost for him if he can take the match.

Haven't seen any vision of the match but I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrgios and some of the other young Aussie players were in the crowd cheering him on. They really made a point of doing it at the AO and I think that sense of camaraderie is one of things that will help them get up in close matches.

Here's hoping Nick and Bernie can fly the flag on day 2.

That was one of the worst maths Hewitt has ever played. Simply awful. Hopefully Kyrgios and Tomic can do better.

Tomic loses in three to Karlovic after being unable to escape from two tiebreaks. A bit disappointing but I'm not too fussed.
