3.5 team heading to Districts, but. . . .

The teams we're playing against were Early Start teams which played before The Great Bump. This means that while my team lost half of it's players last year to the bump-up, the teams we're playing still have theirs. The majority of their players have been bumped to 4.0, but they still get to play their 3.5 playoffs. This doesn't really seem fair.

ALSO. . . what happens to our self-rated 3.5's who are forced to play the bumped up 4.0's & get wins. Won't those wins be counted as strikes? And potentially DQ the 3.5?

That does seem fundamentally unfair. I would still go, and look forward to some strong competition and good match play experience. And have a good time no matter what!

Oh I am definitely looking forward to it! I'm really not worried about it, just thought it was an interesting scenario. Especially with our self-rated 3.5's having to play the 4.0's and the effect that will have on potential 3 strike DQ's.

Yeah, it's kind of like you don't dare to win... (But won't it be really satisfying if you do!)

Is this your state tournament for the adult league? You guys must start a lot later than we do - we had our state tournament in May!

Get over it. This recreational tennis. There is no money, no free trips, no free cars, or anything else of significance at stake. All you can likely look forward to is a t-shirt for showing up. Just go and play tennis. Win or lose it is a lot of fun just to get to the district playoffs.

I'm not sure "get over it" is really a fair response. Playing at Districts takes up plenty of time and money - and if the league has stacked the deck against you then it would be easy to consider the time and money to be wasted. Especially this year.

Why? Because so many people (including very average players) were bumped from 3.5 last year. If there is a section allowing players to compete at their 2009 ratings in a 2010 league then that is unfair to all of their opponents.

You are correct that there is nothing earth-shattering at stake. At the same time, it is reasonable to expect all of the teams to be following the same rules.

We won Districts and it didn't cost us anything.

Only 2 hours of time was needed.

    :)

And we got the USTA victory towels!

    On to the next round.

If someone believes that the USTA has "stacked the deck" against them at the district playoffs then they probably shouldn't go. The OP already has a defeatist attitude and he is not even at the playoff tournament yet.

The ratings are screwed up to some degree every year there are always going to teams at the districts that appear to have players playing at the wrong level. If that is too bothersome for some people then they shouldn't go because they will have a miserable time.

Cruzer. . . how do you see so clearly into the depths of my soul?
Yes, I just pulled myself up out of the fetal position and wiped off my thumb which I had been sucking despondently for the last 24 hours, so I could type this post.

I can assure you I do not have a defeatist attitude. Like I said earlier, I am very much looking forward to Districts. I'm looking forward to measuring my game against 4.0's. I sincerely believe that I'll win every match I play. . . but I always think like that, whether it's realistic or not.

Again, I posted because I thought it was an interesting scenario.

My team won the early start 3.5, but players bumped up are not eligible for districts here. We had 7 bumped up, including me, and the remaining 7 are not being allowed to compete since we can't field a full team.

Interesting that your district is allowing them to compete. They won't be eligible at nationals, right?
