Surprised there's no match thread again! Tipsa is failing us!

Meanwhile, a nice WTA-style match is going on...four games, four service breaks. Dog was down to 13% 1st serves before closing out his first hold at 3-2 with two good ones.

Could be a "dog"-fight for the Bull!

I approve of this thread. I predicted a Dolgopolov win and I stand by my prediction!

The Dog wins 6-3 first set.

    Under 40% 1st serve in.

    6/7 net points won.

    He's full of surprises.

Ok i guess we're posting here too. Im randomly doing timers for Nadal's service games just for the heck of it. He started the match under the 25seconds limit but he's drifting over it now and some points (which he loses) he's taking way over the 25second limit.

Dolgopolov is playing extremely well tho, if he wins this then i dont see Murray playing so average on his next match. Thats for damn sure.

Larry Ellison was unimpressed by Nadal's forehand.

Dolgo 6-3 first set,no doubt Nadal finds some way to grind him down in 3 though...

i am LOVING someone moonballing to Rafa as much as he does, he's having to take big strides back to deal with it and you can tell its pushing him out of his comfort zone. Vamos Dolgopolov!

This is really a grindfest. In that kind of scenario I'd favour Nadal unless Dolgopolov finds his first serve more often. However, Nadal is trying to run around impossible shots and hits improbable moonballs.

Next ITF Rule: Racquets with fewer crosses than mains will be banned. Yeah, Dolgo uses 18/16.

Nadal's looking slow whilst Dolgo runs fast like a cartoon character.

Dolgo is seriously reducing his chances with his UEs and low 1st serve percentage. The problem isn't rallies he has no chances in; but more rallies where he has the putaway and put it wide in the corridor.

I worry about Dolgopolov service games, he's either firing winners off both wings and moonballing like a boss or he's spraying errors wide and long. As long as he gets the ratio right then he should be ok but this is hit and miss stuff at the min.

    +1.
Plus, he's actually done okay in the rallies, yet it feel as if he's pounding on everything in sight. Obviously, it's also a way to prevent Nadal from getting into a rhythm. But he needs to make those shots a bit more often if he is to close this one out. Too erratic

So it wasn't only my eyes acting up. Somehow I'm not surprised; I find Nadal has an about equal tendency to chain huge victories and subpar, difficult matches. He plays much better in latter rounds IMO.

Nadal just doesn't look fit. He needs to only look at Federer to see what a bad back can do.

Dolgopolov had success by doing what Djokovic sometimes does to Nadal - moon balls to the Nadal backhand with his forehand.
By doing that, he gives himself a time to come closer to the baseline and Rafa has to wait the ball to bounce before the backhand swing.

It's interesting that he also had success by playing flat to the Nadal forehand, where Nadal seems to have no confidence to play it down the line. At least for now.

they both are. It's an unforced error fest at this stage with both hitting the occasional good/great shot

1st set 1st serve percentage of 38%. Nadal isn't going to tee on his serves from where he's returning from, might as well aim for 120mph and get past 50% 1st serves.

That is exsactly what im talking about, Perfect winner out wide which Nadal barely got back, easy volley and he puts it wide. You cant afford to keep doing that if you wanna win this match.

It's inevitable Dolgo will get broken and lose the whole match. Not sure why he can't tone it down a bit... maybe it throws off his whole rhythm or lack of rhythm.

Seems Nadal found his way back to the baseline. He breaks, and I can't say Dolgopolov's level of play isn't stranger to that. 4-2 second set.

Seriously, what's with the 2-3 meters net-clearance? I long back to the Wawrinka-match. Dolgo broke himself yet again. Can he get back it in or is Rafa running away with it?

I dont see Dolgopolov winning this now. First set he was playing the same type of tennis but he was hitting it clean, now the errors are starting to creep in with shanks and his range is off. He's still got the speed and looks up for this but Nadal's service games are more solid now, i dont see him getting broken again.

Man, how many UE has Dolgo made in this set, 10, 15?

I am guessing his 2nd set W/UE will be 4/16

This is a horrible match. Nadal is just an unforced error machine, I never thought I would say that about him 4-5 years ago.

Nadal has hit 7 winners (against 16 UE) in 18 games, one of the all-time top-performances in attacking tennis. Those numbers would rival the great golden retriever.
