I'm just watching her against cibulkova. date is losing but she can handle the pace well. she also does not have a bad first serve, can get it around 100 mph.

from the baseline date does not have a killer stroke but she is not a pusher either. she uses the pace of the opponent and hits flat and pacy shots. not a lot of topspin but takes the ball early and slaps it quite hard into the corners.

Bradley Klahn who was one of the top players in NCAA D1 and won the NCAA singles title Vs Jelena Jankovic.

JJ is kicking some butt here on the video. so you decide if 5.0 guy can compete with top pro Krumm.

I think many mistake Krumm's style of play and discern it as weak. But, again, watching her against Cibulkova right now - NO 5.0 could hang long against her. Perhaps a top tier D1 player could likely beat her but she's not a push-over by any stretch of the imagination.

date won second set 6-1 after losing first:).

she is really not easy to play. her strokes are flat and have good pace and depth because she is using cibulkovas pace. hit quite a few winners there.

Date-Krum has a really simple take back and clean contact with a good follow through. Her groundstrokes look simple because she doesn't make any convoluted, nonessential movements. Her genius is tied to the seeming simplicity of her groundstrokes.

All the recreational hacks who haven't played a lot of tennis, and haven't had to go up against different styles of play, just can't comprehend how this style could be effective. People want to believe that there is one "correct" way to play tennis. She is playing a style of tennis that although it is not en vogue any more, it is just as effective as it ever was.

"Oh, but she hasn't faced a rising 3.5 goat kick serve, or the ultra topspin mtm, falling backwards forehand..."

    give me a break

Hard to tell from that blurry video, but that doesn't look like the normal intensity Klahn plays at. Looks more like he's just trying to get JJ to work for the point and he lets it go. A 5.0 won't be very competitive at all with Krumm, but I don't think this video is a very good judgement or comparison tool for that. Klahn is in the top 100 ATP and would surely woop JJ in an actual competitive match

Klahn and Brymer should be able to beat Date if they played a serious match, but we're now talking about an NCAA champ and the top junior in the US, i.e. rising or future ATP pros, not anything even remotely resembling anyone who has a 5.0 USTA rating.

Date-Krumm plays with a 13.6 oz frame. I read that it was 28 inches too though I'm not sure of that.

I would guess that the weight and swingweight of her racquets somewhat influences her strokes. I doubt that most TW players know what it's like to hit with a frame that heavy assuming that the swingweight is commensurate.

Could she beat Billie Jean King's bionic plastic knee caps?

Billie Jean King didn't use a semi-western forehand grip. That means every poster on talk tennis would Goatify King with their ultra-modern max pronation/supination isr pat the dog forehands

The top 10.0 national mixed combo team would beat McEnroe/Martina.

She'd eat it before our match maybe with a cup of coffee on the side and then beat me 6-0, 6-0.

Ha, you are a good poster Topspin. You give the WTA players the proper respect which is unusual for some on the forum.

Austin Rapp was a practice partner for Date-Krumm at Indian Wells. Austin is a UCLA recruit and 36 in the country. So that's the minimum level expected for someone to compete with Date-Krumm. Side notes: I played Austin when he was 13 and much smaller and less physically developed and I was 14 and beat him in 3 sets! Unfortunately, he would bagel me 0 and 0 now, but I'm proud of how much he has grown in his game and physically.

Top tier Puerto Rico 5.0 would hang just fine with USC / UCLA clowny clowns.

Till you have actually hit with a pro or at least their training partner you have no idea how good they really are. I have played with someone who is a hitting partner of Tipsarević and Tursunov as well as a few college D2, D1 players.

There's no way in hell a 5.0 will have a hope in hell of even giving more then a decent warmup for Krumm and forget about getting even a game unless he's lucky or she's charitable.

I played Chang 2/3 sets in 1981. Therefore, I can comment with LeeD like prophecies.

Our country club pro is a top 4.5 but doesn't play league. He would overpower Date and demolishes most 4.0s in our section with impunity.

    Then he's a 4.5 sand bagger. No way a correctly rated 4.5 or 5.0 is anywhere near a 7.0.

Were are talking about a 50,000 vs a top 100... No way

Chang was eight or nine years old in 1981. So maybe Joel did go 2/3 sets with him.

Played him at the Santa Barbara Junior open 12/under. I was using the Borg Pro with Leiona 66 and he was using a Prince Graphite. Betty and Carl were there GOATing watching Michael destroy the #1 ranked 12/under Junior in VCJTA - me.

He annihilated me. But I had Fila GOAT Borg wristbands and Rod Lavers so I was the more complete player. I think he was wearing generic white tennis clothes. My dad was spraying Betty the whole match. Was an epic day in SB. On way home I made my Dad stop at Tennis LTD on Victory blvd in Van Nuys and buy me new Elllesse kit. This was the key to getting to Chang's level.

The red Sergio Tachini GOAT track jacket was also purchased at this time.

    Racket weight matters very little.
Shroud on here regularly hits with a 14 oz racket, and the ball goes just like any ball from any strong player, no difference.

This thread is useless because Date Krumm is still a touring pro. Most reading this thread never heard of her and think she is some old washed up female pro who has lifted a racquet in 20 years.

Then maybe there might be some hope for a 5.0..

    5.0 ???

    It would be 6-0, 6-0.

I played 5.0. I would have been destroyed.

You better be somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0 to even play a tennis pro.
