anyone heard that certain, ahem, actions can affect the level of play of an athlete in a negative way, if done the day of or the night before play? think things you might do with your girlfriend

It might mess you up in the head... haha. It would certainly cause you to become unfocused...

Unless you make your living on the tour, sex is more important than tennis. Shoot, stop playing tennis if it affects your performance in bed, not the other way around.

No worries. Nothing wrong with eating during sex. Or, vice versa!

The textbook we used in a required phys-ed course in college said that sex the night before was good. Takes your mind off of other things, get a good nights sleep, relaxes you...

They assumed this was getting to bed at a normal hour. Staying out bar hopping and going home with whoever looks good at 2 am isn't what they had in mind.

I've tried it 30 minutes before playing, and that may have caused me to play badly. But the night before is ok for me.

This has been historically considered a truth though dating as far back as the ancient Greeks and Chinese. Could be so. Women weaken legs is an old boxing maxim. I'd think it has more to do with concentration than energy personally. If you are trying to focus nothing helps more than a nagging wife...

As someone has said before (but not in this thread), the act of sex the night before does not hurt the next days athletic performance. What hurts the athlete the next day is staying late at the bar, buying drinks for the gal to get her sufficiently liquered up to have sex with him, then making his way home in the wee hours of the morning.

If you've got a steady and want to knock off a quicky, no harm to you the next day. If you're in a strange town and want to go chasing some strange tail, that can hurt you the next day. (and for quite a while, actually, if you're not careful).

And, I'm glad you addressed this to just the guys.
This does not apply to the gals.

(They have a WAY easier time picking up guys!)

thanks for the responses guys. The chasing tail the night before thing doesn't concern me, as that's obviously not a smart thing. I personally have found that sex the day of, not the night before, playing makes me play terrible, it seems to take the fight out of me so to speak ;)

Ahh. We also have a way of not thinking about sex 24/7 so we don't suffer concentration problems the next day. By then, we are way over it. ;)

Sex the night before the competition will decrease your performance, if :

    1. you BELIEVE that sex will decrease your performance.

    2. sex is not part of your regular activity.

    3. if you don't get enough sleep because you have sex all night.

Here's exactly what Charlie Francis (The coach of Ben Johnson when Ben was the number one sprinter in the world)) said about this topic :

"At a Grand Prix meet in Brussels, Ben Johnson was cornered and propositioned by the female manager of one of his top rivals. He didn't get out of the sack until 15 minutes before the race. Ben barely made it in time, took a few stretches and blew everybody in the race away! Afterwards, the female manager told her athlete — the rival Ben had just beaten, "Well, I did my job, you didn't do yours!" So in that case, pre-competition sex didn't harm performance at all!

The only specific sport organization that ever had a specific policy on sex was the East Germans. The policy was very successful because they were highly in favor of sex before sports! They even literally "paired up" their teams to accomplish this objective, although I don't know who they were finding for the big shot putters! I even joked with one of their male middle distance runners once about who got to team-up with their world record shot putter. He relied, "Me, if I lose!" In Rome in 1981 I even witnessed the East Germans pack up the bus with athletes to take them to the porno movies downtown in preparation for the World Cup!

But back to your question, I wouldn't have any policy other than you don't want to create any unusual circumstances. If it isn't usual to have sex before competition, then don't do it. If it isn't usual to abstain, then don't abstain. Do whatever you normally do.

It's a bit of a wife's tale, but studies have shown that test levels climb to about a week from the last salutation. After that, there's no more upside . . . if there was any at all. ;)

Yep, this is religion in boxing. For guys, it's a no-no. For girls, it's a yes-yes. For some reason, sex is bad for guys before a sporting event. But it's supposed to be good for girls. Come to think of it, it's high-time I start being a women's professional volleyball groupie, or I start dating a female boxer.

Sex plays a much bigger role in a relationship than tennis does. So if you if think you're going to lose your 3.0 league match if you do what it do the night before then you need to check your priorities.
