I still think that NCSU is going to be better than most people think this year, and will compete with some teams that were always above them in the past. Not saying they will be top 3 in the conference, just noticeably better than in the recent past.

EDIT: Compare scores of NCSU vs. VCU and Duke vs. VCU, just a few days apart, and you will see what I mean.

    ACC in the rankings

    3 Virginia
    5 Duke
21 NC State (they are good this year, but this is far over ranked)
    30 North Carolina
    32 Florida State
    50 Virginia Tech
    59 Miami
    63 Wake Forest
    67 Maryland
    Clemson
    Georgia Tech
    Boston College

looking weak. I remember just two years ago, the ACC had tons of teams in the 20-30 range. Bad for teams wanting to climb the rankings too because there are not as many opportunities to climb.

As tradition may have it that may be the case. However, I believe UNC Wilmington my be better than their ranking. NCSU is likely not as good as their ranking.

Miami is a classy team. Coach Rincon and the players are respectful and good guys. They have some talent but a lot of it is raw. If they can polish it up they will be good next year.

They sure do. I dont know why doubles has suddenly become such an issue for them. I feel like they are going throuhg a bit of a confidence lull right now as a team.

turned into a pretty easy win for UVA

but yeah, they better get their dubs straight by the time NCAAs rolls around, gonna take a toll on them grinding out 4 singles wins even in the matches they're talented enough to pull out without the dubs pt

duke up 2-0 on nc state but they're showing some fight

torsten back in singles and looking like he's not the same player he was when he was straight-setting UF a few weeks ago

and hemmeler out for some reason

mengel should make it 3-0 or 3-1, so hopefully one of the other guys stops screwing around

    NC State - Duke LiveStats.

Duke should prevail, but not too comfortably, it appears. Wietoska and Marchese are obviously not in form after being out with injuries this year.

    cunha clinches

6-3 in the second after being down 0-3 and two breaks

the commentator was funny (they had pretty sweet coverage of the #1 singles match, haven't seen that before) - questioned so many calls from both players - "wow, i can't believe that was called out!"

also kept referring to 3rd sets as TBs

"paez looking like he'll take the second set against marchese, so a TB will decide it"

NC State at UNC. This will be an interesting one. NC State gave their best shot vs Duke. Can they respond against UNC?

Maryland vs Oklahoma Terps getting close to doubles point

    NC State vs UNC predictions:

    doubles: NC State

1: Hernandez def Pulgar in 3
2: Boyajian def Hodgson in 2
    3: Mudge def Hess-Olesen in 3
4: Powell def Burkhardt in 2
5: Perez def Parker in 3
6: Steiro def Sullivan in 2

so it looks like I am picking Nc State 4-3. We will see. I am not confident of the Mudge over Hess-Olesen pick however.

Maryland won doubles but Oklahoma has already won 4-1 after crushing the terps in 4 straight setters. Looks like it will be 6-1 as the other two are firmly in the Sooner's control. No set closer than 6-4

UNC won doubles vs NC State. The Heels looked the come out trong in singles and led on 5 courts but now the Pack have punched back and lead on 4 courts while 1 court is even.

You got one prediction right, sort of. Boyajian won a match tiebreaker at #2. All other points went the opposite. Predicting college tennis is a lot of fun. :)

    Big day in ACC tomorrow

    picks:

NC State at Miami - 6-1 NC State. Wilfredo Gonzalez will win at 3 for Miami.

BC at Georgia Tech - GT 6-1

Maryland at Clemson - Clemson 5-2. Terps will win at position 6(we have struggled there this year) and somewhere else.

VT at UNC - 5-2 UNC. Somen over Hernandez.

Wake at FSU - FSU 6-1. Kreyman wins at 1 but Noles sweep the rest.

and the big one Virginia at Duke. I pick a 5-2 Virginia win. I expect a statement to be made from Virginia here, because they haven't really had a big statement match yet. They will win doubles then take 4 of the singles spots.
    1: Cunha def Jenkins 4-6 6-3 6-3
    2: Domijan def Mengel 6-4 7-5
    3: Frank def Wietoska 6-3 6-2
    4: Courtney def Saba 6-2 7-5
    5: Hemmeler def Shane 6-4 5-7 6-2
    6: Uriguen def Tahir 6-4 4-6 6-1

NC State def Miami 4-3 - Surprisingly close match. Miami showed good fight at 5 and 6 and Gonzalez won at 3 like I expected, guy is a big fighter. Pulgar continues to play good tennis. He's been great this year.

UNC def VT 5-2 - Sild recovery by UNc after dropping doubles

GT def BC 7-0 - Rout. BC only took one set. Real bad sign for the Eagles since GT is not even that good.

FSU def Wake 5-2 - Another ACC team takes doubles but loses match. Kreyman played a weird match vs Davis at #2 and barely lost. Wake is very weak at 5 and 6 this year.

Clemson def Maryland 5-2 - Terps took doubles but Clemson played great in singles. Yannick Maden destroyed Horny 6-1 6-2. Meza and Wibowo played excellent 3rd sets to clinch the win. Tigers continue to be money in 3rd sets.

    Actually, the score was 4-3.

EDIT: Note that the story says Daciek of Tech won, while the box score has the score reversed. The coach's comments and write-up indicate it really was 4-3.

FSU def NC State 4-1, two matches still going on. Bucaro suffers his first loss of the year though

Clemson def BC 5-2. Not as close as the score indicates. Doubles beatdown, 4 of the singles were beatdowns. Wibowo hurt his achilles in the 2nd set while leading 6-2 1-0 and didnt play great after that and lost.

Akash Muppidi def 49 Yannick Maden 6-4 7-5
This was an excellent tactical match. Both players play the same style and tons of long rallies. Noth smart players. Muppidi prefers his forehand while Maden prefers his backhand. Maden dropped too many short balls and Muppidi capitalized. He had beter court positioning all match, usually standing right at the baseline. It's a shame that BC could never build a team around Muppidi, great player and excellent competitor.

man, the way jarmere played against cunha from 5-6, 0-30 on and the way he thrashed hernandez today...

not sure there is anyone in the country other than steve johnson playing better than him right now

boland must be very proud of the way his captain has responded to being given the #1 nod above domi and frank this yr

Virginia tore apart UNC today. Very impressive result for the Cavs.

Duke also cruised. I want to see a rematch in the final between the two(unless Clemson pulls of a shocker :) ). Because I was disappointed with the match Friday. Not much drama, wasn't really a "battle" even though it was 4-3.

The Hokies upset the Wolfpack 5-2. Somen and Oliviera with strong performances at the top two positions.

GT gives UNC a good match but falls 3-4. A strong performance from Hernandez at one was the difference. Lost the first set 6-7 but then rolled 1 and 2 over King. Impressive

    FSU edged Maryland 4-3

Duke beat Clemson 7-0.Clemson took 2 sets

Virginia killed Wake 7-0. Although pretty good match from Hopkins.

Boston College upsets Miami 5-2. Terrible loss for Miami, but you look at the singles results and really it makes sense. The only result that was a surprise was Nelson over Tsukamoto

ACC is so unpredictable this year. It's the top 2 and then the rest.

Bye bye from the rankings Miami. Losing to Maryland 4-3 today coupled with the loss to BC will doom them.

    VT edged Wake 4-3.

Duke beat GT 6-1, but it was another good effort from GT. They seem to be getting better. Spir beat Mengel and King and #3 also put together very close matches that they could have easily won.

Virginia def NC State 6-1. Julian Sullivan shockingly beat Courtney though. I don't see anyway how that happened.

    UNC def Clemson 6-1

    ACC clashes this Friday:

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech - This will be a tight match. GT needs the doubles point and needs King to bring his A game again. VT is a lock at 5 and 6. I will say GT wins 4-3

North Carolina and Miami - UNC 7-0

Virginia at Clemson - Virginia 7-0. Clemson's best shot is doubles and it may sound insane, but Wibowo over Frank. Frank does better vs other grinders, but Wibowow is not a grinder, for some reason I see this being a trouble match for Frank. But in the end Wibowo does not have the netla strength to actually win.

Boston College at NC State - NC State 6-1

Maryland at Wake Forest - Wake Forest 4-3. Must take care of business at the top of the line-up

Duke at Florida State - FSU's first big ACC test in a while. Can they give Duke a tough match? Duke is the heavy favorite at 1 and 2. FSU will need Bucaro to but in a win at 3 and also gets wins at 4-6 somehow. I think they will fight hard but in the end it will be 5-2 Duke. Bucaro and Lock wins for FSU.

So, Miami is really struggling this year with losses in 6 of the last 8 matches. Wow.

Miami used to have a really top-notch program. Virginia currently has a record 85-match ACC winning streak, and I believe the last loss was on our home courts in Charlottesville to Miami in 2007.

Duke def FSU 4-3. Bucaro and Lock won just like I predicted. Lock is going to be a serious player in this league in coming seasons and Bucaro is suddenly a monster at #3.

UNC def Miami 5-2. Very strong effort from Miami. Actually had a shot to win this as Soto gave up a set lead to Burkhardt and Flores put in the match of his life and lost to Hernandez 7-5 in the 3rd set breaker.

Wake just finished off Maryland 4-3. Wake is so weak at 5 and 6, but pretty good at the top positions. Doubles was the key as both teams have strong doubles and Wake was able to edge #2 dubs 11-9 in the breaker.

GT def VT 5-2 - Luka Somen routed King 6-2 6-2 but everything else went the Jackets way. Surprised to see the bottom of the line-up go in Tech's way.

Virginia def Clemson 6-1 - Rigsby routined Oudshoorn 6-0 6-4 at #6 for the Tigers point. #3 doubles for Clemson also won. Harrington gave up an 8-5 supertiebreak lead to lose to Courtney. Pretty decent performance from the Tigers. (full report will be in the Clemson tennis thread).

so I nalied my picks today. Did have Wake and Gt winning

NC State has done some serious tinkering with their line-up this year. Mudge is down at 5 after being as high as 2.

UNC getting close to closing it out. Boyajian one game away vs Davis. FSu needs Reed to fight through the 2nd and comeback vs Stero. (5-5 in 2nd after Stero won the first).

Bucaro continues to roll, beats Hess-Olesen 604 6-2
