No real surprise. Quite a drop from last week but kind of expected it. Miami gotta a ways to climb back up.

North Carolina picked up a couple of recruits yesterday - Brayden Schnur from Canada and Johan Skattum from Norway to go along with Ronnie Schneider and Jack Murray.

UNC is down there at 44. Needs to beat VCU today to get their rankings back up to a good level. If you stay in one spot of the rankings too long you may start to believe that's where you belong.

Duke's women's team down to 5 players now, which in college tennis is a real problem. Monica Turewicz tore her ACL, out for the year. If your daughter is attending Duke and knows how to hold a racquet tell her to give Jamie a call.

wow, what a season of disaster - three starters gone - i'm sure they'll find a club player or something to step in but that #2 ranking will be long gone soon

I continue to be shocked by FSU not using Bucaro or Gonzalez-Mendez in singles.

UNC is ranked 57 yet has 4 ranked players. That has to be some kinda of record.

NC State at UNC today. This is one of two matchups in the acc season where one team is forced to go to the others place in two consecutive years because if scheduling retooling when Maryland left. (The other is Clemson to FSU)

I think UNC finally gets a win today and begins to boost their ranking back into tournament consideration.

Is this still going to be the case with Notre Dame going to the ACC next year?
Then the following year Louisville jumps in.

Parker served for match at 5-4 but was broken and now Thompson will serve 6-5 to put Wolfpack up 3-1.

NC State wins it. Parker led the tiebreak 4-1 then went down 4-6 but them saved 2 match points. But Thompson got it done in the end 10-8. At about the same time Weber won at 5.

Well, they did not find a club player. They defaulted #3 doubles and #6 singles and got beat by #60 Indiana today. Even with the injuries, I cannot see three ranked players for Duke losing in three sets at the top three singles positions to three unranked players.

Duke dominated the doubles point even after forfeiting at #3 doubles. Should be able to win three out of the top five singles spots against Indiana.

EDIT: Duke won all five first sets, then lost all five second sets in singles.

Georgia Tech only lost to Florida State 3-4. 5 and 6 got slaughtered though. Good showings from both GT and Miami today, bottom of ACC still pretty good.

Wake beat NC State over the weekend so they'd both be 1-1 in conference.

For ACC fans - do the new schools coming in add anything to the conference? Syracuse doesn't have men's tennis, and women's isn't that good. But, Lousiville and Notre Dame are fairly decent, right? Don't know anything about Pitt.

The headliner tomorrow is Duke at Virginia of course.

    Couple of other interesting ones:

45 NC State at 15 Clemson - Prediction 5-2 Clemson, NC State wins at 4 and either doubles or 3

29 Wake Forest at 74 Georgia Tech - Prediction 6-1 Wake, GT at 1

70 North Carolina at 52 Virginia Tech - Prediction 4-3 UNC

94 consecutive dual match wins for UVa against ACC opponents in all competitions. 10 of those 94 were 4-3 wins; 4 of those 10 were against Duke, including four of the last five regular season matchups between Duke and UVa.

UVa also has three 4-3 wins against FSU, per the trivia questions and answers posted at thesabre.com.

Only Louisville and Notre Dame have men's tennis. They will both be solid additions as they usually reside in the 20-40 range.

    Today's matches:

NC State at Georgia Tech - I think this will be closer than expected. 4-3 State. GT will take 1,2 and 4. Georgia Tech has been playing some better tennis lately and NC State may still be high from their upset on Friday.

UNC at Virginia - Virginia 7-0. UNC had a terrible loss vs VT Friday. They really needed that win.

Duke at Virginia Tech - Duke will win 7-0.

Miami at FSU - FSU 6-1. I'd like to think Miami will give abetter match but I don't see any good matchups for them.

Clemson at Boston College - 7-0 Clemson. Blaho might get some play time.

Duke barely took doubles from Virginia Tech.

Looks like GT and NC State will come down to #3's 3rd set between Powell and Segura.

FSU about to take a 3-2 lead on Miami. Miami will need a rally from Stancati at 5 and not let Lock back into the match at 3.

I was talking to my friend who is a Nole alum and mentioned that the fsu/Clemson match is under protest. I love seeing the Noles lose so I thought it was just whining but after I looked it up I think he is right, Clemson clearing stacking at 4. Sounds like that match will get over turned.

Nonsense. Wibowo has been playing 4 all season. He is having a rough time but that does not mean he cannot play 4. He has a win over Esben Hess-Olesen in his career and has the game to bother top 4 guys when he is playing well.

That's not how the lineup works, fall results or past rankings mean nothing.....all wibowo does is lose, and maden too.....will have to move down soon and I'd be surprised if that match is not over turned

I'm very interested in the Florida State at NC State match today.

I wonder if FSU will play Davis at 4 or go with Gonzalez-Mendez at 6 and move Reed and Rinaldi up.

Both teams have strong doubles. NC State has the edge at 1 but FSU has the edge at 2 and 3 doubles.

If NC State plays Weigel at 1 they have a shot. Weigel could beat Cotrone but I do not think Mudge can. Lock and Kelly-Houston should get wins over Mudge and Powell. Thompson should beat Davis at 4 for an NC State win. Beck Bond vs Rinaldi will be a good match at 6.

It'll be close but I expect FSU to win. I will be following it closely.

whoa NC State with a big mix-up. Weigel all the way down to 4. I don't see the logic in that move. Thomson is more than capable of beating Davis. NC State has given themselves a sure win at 4 but given FSU the advantage at 1-3. FSN the solid favorite now.

Looks like NC State has the complete momentum on 1-3 now. FSU collapsing after set leads once again. Same thing happened against Clemson.

    ACC report thus far:

    Virginia

Most impressive result: The win over USC in the indoor final.

Most discouraging result: The battle with Baylor. Ended up winning but was given a real test.

Most surprising player: Mac Styslinger. People knew he was good but he has exceeded expectations in his first year.

Most disappointing player: Hard to pick any for Virginia. But would have to go with Johnny Cornish. He was supposed to compete immediately in doubles.

Expectation for rest of the season: National title or bust.

Key to achieve the expectation: The doubles point will be key in the late rounds of the NCAA's. Also Styslinger and Ryan Shane will be tested and will be important for them to be up to the task as Freshmen.

    Duke

Most impressive result: Routine win over Tennessee without Mengel.

Most discouraging result: Loss to Cal. Cal has shown instances of good play but also some poor play.

Most surprising player: Fred Saba. From a solid #4 to a very good #2 with some very nice wins this season already.

Most disappointing player: Chris Mengel. Has taken a step back this year. Moved down to 4 and has had his struggles there.

Expectation for rest of the season: Quarterfinals or Semifinals of NCAA. Bonus result an ACC title.

Key to achieve expectation: The continued great play of Cunha at 1. He needs to get the big wins over other big players at 1 like he has been doing this year and become the powerful senior leader. Also Tahir and Hemmeler need to lock down 5 and 6 like they have been doing.

    Florida State

Most impressive result: 4-3 win at Oklahoma where the Noles showed great composure.

Most discouraging result: 5-2 loss to Florida. Florida is not a great team this year and they beat the Noles with little sweat. It was a disappointing rivalry result for FSU.

Most surprising player: Dominic Cotrone. Has become a solid #1 player for FSU. In a bit of a losing streak now but a massive improvement from in and out of the line-up like last year.

Most disappointing player: Andres Bucaro. Had a breakout year last year but this year is not playing in the top 6. He could be a big help to FSU if he was playing well again.

Expectation for the rest of the season: ACC semifinals. Make the final 16, aim at hosting.

Key to achieve expectation: Continued domination at 2 and 3 doubles. Also needs Kelly-Houston to step it up and become a solid win at 3 or 4. Must get better production from Lock as well.

    Clemson

Most impressive result: Tie between 4-3 comeback win at FSU and 5-2 solid win at Auburn.

Most discouraging result: 4-2 home loss to NC State. The bottom of the line-up was the difference there.

Most surprisingly player: Austin Ansari has been a shot in the arm to the team. He has yet to lose a dual match and gives the Tigers a sure win each match almost.

Most disappointing player: Ayrton Wibowo. Struggling to win at 4 is the senior.

Expectation for the rest of the year: Make NCAA round of 16, aim at hosting.

Key to achieve the expectation: The Maden brothers are a great #1 doubles. A more solid combo must emerge at 2 or 3 so that the Tigers can win the doubles point more often. Also need Meza to hit his top form again, Dom Maden returning to form at 4 would also be a great boost.

    Wake Forest

Most impressive result: It was a loss but taking Tennessee to the absolute wire.

Most discouraging result: 7-0 to Duke. The Deacs never threatened in this match, showing the gap between the two teams.

Most surprisingly player: Amogh Prabhakar. Has become a very solid top of the line-up player and could make the NCAA individuals.

Most disappointing player: David Hopkins. It's tough for him to play #1 but the senior cannot get a win at the top position.

Expectation for rest of the season: Top 4 ACC. Push for the NCAAs final 16.

Key to achieve the expectation: Kreyman must improve his play and give his team a more solid top 3. Because the team has a weakness at 1, the bottom must be solid. Mays or Bloom needs to step in and become the reliable 6.

    NC State

Most impressive result: 6-1 win at UNC. The way they won. Fought through and won all 4 of the 3 setters. Showed great resiliency against a rival.

Most discouraging result: 4-3 loss to MTSU. This loss may hold their ranking back in coming rankings. MTSU is a good team but still not a team NC State should be losing to.

Most surprisingly player: Austin Powell. Has become a solid 1 or 2 player and been a big boost to the Pack.

Most disappointing player: Not really related to this year's team. But I always thought Ivan Sanchez-Gomez had talent and could be a good top 6 player. Never materialized for him.

Expectation for rest of the season: Top 30 and NCAA 2nd round.

Key to achieve expectation: Doubles has been a solid point for them all season. If they can win the doubles point each match then they are dangerous. Weigel cannot have a slip now, he must remain a solid part of the team. Norenius returning from injury would also be helpful, although it's tough to determine who you take out of the line-up for him at this point with no glaring weak spot.

    Miami

Most impressive result: 4-3 win over Minnesota(made better by the Gophers recent success), also taking Clemson to the absolute edge.

Most discouraging result: 5-2 loss to North Florida. A loss that holds the ranking back.

Most surprising player: Diego Soto. Has become a solid #1 player, up from his slot at 5 last year.

Most disappointing player: Omar Aly. In and out of the line-up and has been wildly inconsistent forcing Albanese into the line-up.

Expectation for rest of the year: NCAA tournament

Key to achieve expectation: Wilfredo Gonzalez's continued domination. Also Stancati has been very competitive at 5 and pushed some good players but he needs to turn those into wins. Doubles must improve cause as it is they are conceding the dubs point nearly every match.

    Virginia Tech

Most impressive result: 5-2 over Michigan State. Not a lot to chose from for VT.

Most discouraging result: 4-3 loss to VCU. They should not feel bad about this loss because VCU is very good. But it was a close match and a massive missed opportunity for the Hokies.

Most surprising player: Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus share this. Both have come into college as freshmen and been very solid. These two are the lone reason VT is still competitive.

Most disappointing player: Lucas Oliviera. Was #2 last year and is now 3 but he is struggling more this season. He gets routed by any decent player.

Expectation for the rest of the season: Make the NCAA tournament

Key to achieve expectation: A player outside of the top 2 needs to step up. Koontz is showing signs that it coule be him with some close matches against good players. Monteiro also showing some life down at 6. Those two need to become winners to help out the efforts of the top 2.

    North Carolina

Most impressive result: 4-3 win over Tulsa. To this point this is their ONLY result worth anything.

Most discouraging result: Lots to choose from. Probably the 4-3 loss to TCU was the worst and the 4-3 loss to VT.

Most surprising player: Esben Hess-Olesen. Has become a very solid #1 player for the Heels. Has some big wins this year already.

Most disappointing player: Nelson Vick. Came on strong in the fall and it looked like UNC had landed a big transfer. Has now lost 7 straight, 6 of them in straight sets. Has a loss in all of UNC's important losses this year

Expectation for rest of the season: make the NCAA tournament

Ket to achieve expectation: Confidence. This team has talent, they need a big win to get them rolling. Right now they are in a stupor and need to wake up before it's too late. There are still some chances on that schedule, vs FSU, Clemson and Wake to get ranking boosting wins.

    Georgia Tech

Most impressive result: 4-3 loss to NC State and FSU. These results show that they can compete.

Most discouraging result: 4-3 loss to Fresno State. Lost to a really poor team.

Most surprising player: Nathan Rakitt. Has come on recently and has some good wins. Showing that he can be a force at 4 in the ACC.

Most disappointing player: Juan Spir. He can still play lights out doubles, but he goes away and decides to get wrecked to often in singles. Has too many days where he fails to show up. Not what you want from a senior leader.

Expectation for the rest of the year: Finish in top 64 for 2014 ITA indoor event qualification

Key to reach expectation: Segura and Melian must play the best they can. Rakitt is a solid slot now and Spir can win if he is on. 5 and 6 are very weak. Segura and Melian will determine how well this team can do. Also need Hundal back for that #1 doubles slot.

I wanted to pick VT to upset NC State today but I just can't see them getting doubles or enough wins at 3-6.

I think UNC vs GR the battle of the unranked will be very tight. I'll go 4-3 UNC

UNC finally gets a win. We will see if they can build off of this.

VT does get the upset win over NC State. As I said VT needs a player outside the top 2 to step up in the rest of the season and it looks like Monteiro is doing just that.

Miami has to still face both UNC and VT. Need both. It doesn't get any easier.

    Duke women's team

Reports are that Duke is down to five players (again) after another injury (broken hand) is suffered by a starter.
