Well, I guess it depends on the surface, they could still lose on Clay, but the good news is they won't have to play Spain on clay this year. Maybe Argentina....

Well if he can't go out with a slam a Davis Cup would be awfully sweet.

well the draw looks good for the US, they should win every match, with the only danger being an away tie to ARGENTINA.

But Argentina could well be knocked out by Australia 2nd round on grass, IF hewitt can win both singles and Australia somehow scrounge one more rubber

but if Argentina stumble, its USA's for the taking id have to say from an unbiased view.

won't lose on a non clay court

It means between the lines that he will retire this years if USA wins the Davis cup this year with him in the team, the guy understood when he lost against Federer at the AO this year that though he is still a top player (top 5 I'd say), he has very few chance to end his career "a la" Sampras, by winning a slam title, due to Federer presence, so he must feel that the Davis cup is the best way for him to quit tennis on a great note. Be sure he will fully commit himself on the Davis cup.

I wish him good luck, a great legendary player like him deserves a great exit. I'll root for the US davis cup team this year.

From my opinion some duets may compete:

    1. Safin+Davidenko for Russia
    2. Coria+ Nalbandyan for Argentina
    3. Hewitt + Johansson for Australia
    4. Moya+Nadal for Spain

    5. Federer + Sampras for world

    6. Aykhan + Federer + Sampras for Galaxy.

    7. Aykhan + Federer + MuhammedAli + Ronaldo + Michael Jackson + Barry White + Nelson Mandela + ... for the history........

he will have a strained hip or wrist when davis cup comes around, or he wont travel outside the us.

btw nalbandian is pretty good on the grass, its amazing how ppl wont let u forget about roddicks wimbledon final, yet neglect to mention nalbandians.

It would be fitting if Andre called it a career after a Davis Cup Championship and a US Open title this year (beating Roddick in the final)....that would be an instant ESPN Sportcentury Documentary in the making.

    Max,
I actaully like them on clay against everyone except for a couple of countries. Argentina most likely won't be around in the final rounds (Australia) and If they meet up with Spain again it would be on a surface of the Us's choosing.

If they play Russia on clay in Moscow in semis, they might get eliminated.
I know they beat Russia in 95 on slow red stuff but to do it twice in a row? I doubt it.

Moya is not playing Davis Cup for Spain, in case that hasn't been pointed out yet. He's focusing on the majors this year. But has made himself available for DC next year.

I think it's great Agassi is playing Davis Cup for the U.S.

They came so close last year, and they have a real chance this year. I'm going to Carson for the first round (notice no Nadal in sight *lol*).

And although I've seen Agassi play many times, I haven't seen him play a Davis Cup match live since he and Pete faced the Czech Republic in LA several years ago (I think it was 2000???).

I do think Agassi, Roddick and the Bryans are a formidable team, on just about any surface.

    Go USA!

Ummm, Nalbandian got creamed in that final. And his play, though solid, wasn't particularly amazing in the earlier rounds. (I got to see him live there that year.) But you're right--he would at least give somewhat of a battle on grass, so we can't assume it would be a walkover.

I do think this helps the US if they have to play another team on clay. Even though he's lost a step, Agassi is still U.S.'s best clay player. (Roddick could be if he would just learn to be patient in rallies and expect his usual "kill" shots to come back across the net.)

Agassi is back in the DC, sorta. He said he will not be available for all the ties with his schedule and all. Let's just take it one tie at a time before giving the cup to the U.S. Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled he is playing Davis Cup. It gives the U.S. team a boost for however many ties he is available. Guess ESPN is thrilled.

  27. Thomas Johansen won the Aussie Open so he is allowed to play for Australia. Similarly, Goran is coming out of retirement to play DC for England; Chang for France, etc. :|

Yes, definetly, hi is marring and changing citizenship. I consider him as a tennis player of Australian tennis school.

Sure it is (possible). For instance, didn't Martina play for Checkoslovakia (sp?) -- in Fed Cup -- prior to becoming a US citizen?

True, it is possible, I just looked it up... I stand corrected. She played for Czechoslovakia in 1975, and for the US in 1982.

I think there's some sort of waiting period - you have to wait x years after representing one country to play for another... I think it's five, not sure though.

In any event, I read a recent article in which Patrick McEnroe said he convinced Agassi to play because Patrick felt a bit more best-of-five action would help Agassi. Especially when he has to meet a Federer, Safin or Roddick in the quarters or semis of the majors.

Agassi seemed to agree -- and I bet they all analyzed the draw before making that decision.

    As I said, Go USA!

Davis cup is all about the surface. We will lose on clay. But who cares, Clay is not real tennis...Clay is Pusher Tennis!...LOL.
