Agassi was to play Aussie open in 1990?

So I was watching a dvd last night of Lendl vs Agassi from the Canadian Open from 1989 and Mary Carillo mentions that Agassi confirmed that he was going to play down under. Well that didn't happen but does anyone know why?

He never went to AO until '95 : he won the title on his first try.

I am not sure why, he may simply have changed his mind, as he did almost weekly in those days. However, if memory serves, he also had his wisdom teeth out around the end of the year...maybe that helped changed his mind...not that wisdom teeth would prevent any serious player from going, but with Agassi....if he just learned that Taco Bell US was having a 2 for one sale, that alone would be enough to convince not to go.

Yeah, you're right. Agassi wasn't very serious. Way too lazy. I mean, he only won 8 slams, had a Career Grand Slam, and an Olympic Gold Medal. What a loser.

I think maybe Andre could have won the Aussie Open in 91. He had just won the masters and playing pretty good. Beat Becker Sampras and Edberg there.

He would have had some chance, varying from outside shot to strong contender every year from 88-94...save perhaps 93.

Yes, in 1990, he finished strong. At the masters he showcased a slightly different service motion, and a lot of confidence. Many thought it was dawn of a new start for Agassi. It crashed down a bit after he lost at the 91 FO, but he was quite confident through that time, and playing well.

What was the excuse for missing it in 91 I wonder? I wonder how his career would have been like in those early years if he would have played and won in 91. Surely he takes the confidence and wins the French final in 91? But then I think this guy is wolfing down taco bell and burger king so who knows.

It's possible, but then it's impossible to predict such things, ESPECIALLY when the player (as you seem to realize was a major flake back then...hence his not playing at all). He would have been a contender all those years, but he might have shown up, tanked in the first round, and had a terrible year.....of course, it would not be a cakewalk. While he tended to have Boris' number, Lendl had his. Courier was in the draw, and did well, and was much fitter than Agassi. Even a guy like Gilbert could have been a problem.

Still, one would like to think Agassi would have won a couple of those, and that's a bit unfortunate to think of.

in one of the pre-1995 years (i don't know if it was as early as 1991, it might have been 1994) he had planned to play but got bronchitis over the winter holiday and pulled out.
