What I meant....that he can play no warm up events...and just play his way to form and still win.

What you just said, makes a lot of sense. It could be dam well true.....Novak form, Nadal absence, and Novak increased exposure to the world.....which means more bucks for the ATP.

I agree. I think Nole at his best will beat Rafa at 95% though.

He doesnt think he still has his aura or he wouldnt be in a place like chile. He wants to slowly gain it back.
It's very simplistic thinking that 8 months away from pro tour has no effect on your aura.

Nadal is playing in Latin America because he wants to play his way back into form after a 7 month absence from playing competitive tennis. It's far better for Nadal to do that in Latin America with smaller and weaker fields on clay-courts, than in Indian Wells and Miami on hardcourts with big fields containing all the top players. By the time Monte Carlo starts, Nadal will want to be feeling like he does every April.

Presumably so, but he's not as likely to play his way back into top form there before Monte Carlo.

Nadal vs Del Potro at RG could be pretty good if Nadal's not in optimum form.

He probably has his endurance and physical strength to worry about most of all rather than his aura. For all we know, those close sets he won against Wawrinka on clay in previous matches could suddenly start becoming a little bit closer. Verdasco probably wouldn't mind getting another piece of Nadal on clay after their Madrid match, Berdych probably thinks he can make a better go of it the next time he meets Nadal on clay...

What are you talking about? He won everything in sight on clay in 2012 just before he lost early at Wimbledon. He hasn't lost his aura on clay! Which clay court specialists are going to beat Nadal on clay? Almagro, Ferrer, Monaco? Give me a break. They will cr-p their pants even before they get on a court to play a match. He is merely using the South American clay tournaments as practice matches after being away for a while.

I'm talking about major injury and being 7 months away.

As if Rosol was a grass specialist? If we believe what he himself says his knees are still hurting, so he is vulnerable. There are many players who are not afraid of him at all and can take him out any day. Ferrer, Del Potro to name a couple.
My guess is that Murray will take him out in RG this year.

I agree with Berd and other players being a bigger obstacle for him this time around. I am hoping it's Rodge who takes him out finally in RG.

The man has proved people wrong so many times. As far as I am concerned, on the red clay, he is the man....the king. Until he is not actually beaten, it doesn't matter to me what anyone says. Nadal's racquet, movement and game talks louder than any of those commentators, even if they are legends.

I back him to go all the way again this year. And why not? He is the best, until he is beaten. And Rafa Nadal is not beaten yet.....

who would Nadal have to beat on Clay to put the fear back into the majority of the field?

is it enough that he beats top 20ish type players or does he really have to school someone highly ranked like Murray or a clay courter like Ferrer or Almagro in order for the rest to fall in place and recognise his 'position'?

+1. I have to agree with you. When I actually see somebody else defeat him at RG, then I will believe it. Until then, you would be stupid to bet against him.

I wonder how many people were saying stuff like this in 2009? Nadal is not a lock to win anything anywhere right now. Especially with his knee still bothering him even after 8 months off the tour.

He is not beating Nadal at the FO, take your meds! :) He had his shots to beat Nadal at the FO, he is too old to do so now and Nadal is five years younger!

Ok, this is where one should LOL :)

Hello? Nadal is young and strong?

All your fellow ********* will tell you his tennis age is much older than the one on his birth certificate and you are talking about him being 5 years younger and strong?

I am not a ******* and until I see somebody defeat Nadal at RG, I am not betting against him there. Federer had many chances to beat Nadal at RG in Fed's prime and he screwed up so it is difficult for me to see how a past his prime Federer would beat Nadal there now unless Nadal has really deteriorated.

Agree with you. I am not a ******* either, but I immensly respect what he has done on that surface and at RG. Federer has had chances, but hasn't even been able to get into a fifth set. Nadal is the man until he is actually standing at the net, shaking the hands of the man who has beaten him there.

"Worst surface" is misleading. It's also worst surface for Fed and Djok.

Murray played excellent against Nadal not too long ago and he is much better now.

Another winning thread from a closeted Nadal fan. Matts Trollander has been known to be wrong a couple of times before, not much weight in his opinion except that they are stating the obvious: Nadal has been away for half year, so it will be a hard task for him to win RG. Almost as hard as OP to not post something dumb for a couple days.

What has he won on clay though?

A big hitter like Delpo or Berdych is much more likely to beat Nadal at RG.

Delpo will win the french thats my prediction.

    Oddjack, hope you're well!

Re. the above, I'd have to disagree. If Roger were to, he'd only end up having an asterisk next to the win. I think Roger's ship has long since sailed as regards beating Ralph at RG.

I said myself though a short while ago, before Wilander and Agassi, that I don't think Ralph will take it this year, assuming he enters it. However, no one batted an eye lid ;)

Yes but Djokovic and Federer>>>>>>Murray on clay

Murray played great in those two matches against Nadal on clay in 2011, but won only one set!

He will have much better chance against Nadal in Wimbledon...

I told you I don't hate Nadal! :) On this forum if you are a Federer fan, you cannot praise Nadal and if you are a Nadal fan you cannot praise Federer. I am not that kind of over the top fan even though Federer is my favorite. Saying I think Nadal is the favorite at RG is not a very big leap considering Nadal's history there.

Hey Speranza, good to see ya!

I didnt predict Rodge will beat him, i said I hope so. We dont know where Nadal is at though. Also, if they meet it will be before the final which is better for Rodge. It will be a very interesting RG regardless.

Nadal might not win this, and anybody who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. The fact Nadal might actually take it speaks to Nadal's dominance in RG if nothing else. I can't think of any other player that after 6 months of inactivity would be on the short list of favorites in the first slam after comeback. It's insane.

If Federer doesn't eliminate Rafa if they meet, he should never be allowed to play RG ever again. Already got his pity RG tournament in 2009.

although nadal is now maybe past his prime, he can still win french open again..

and i wouldnt rule it out this year,..though it is a big ask.

french open is still 4 months away and maybe he will just play on clay until june and not bother with the u.s hc masters coming up in march..is it enough time to get back near his best on his favourite surface ???

    hmmm..could be.

If Nadal stays healthy, the US back to back Masters 1000 will be a good indicator of how Rafa will fare for the Clay court swing. Let's see how he does against the top 3, if he ever gets to reach the tail end of these tournaments.

I hope the analysts are wrong about Nadal not capable of winning RG this year but if they are right, maybe Djokovic could win the calendar year grand slam this year.

Nadal winning RG after long break is something remarkable and Djokovic winning the calendar GS is probably an even bigger achievement.

he might not bother with those 2 hc masters..

is he really going to go clay - hc -clay and risk change of surface striaghtaway on his gammy knees ??.

Until he says otherwise, I would have him playing in those HC Masters. Besides, he likes playing in IW. And he better be there coz I'm watching. Never seen any of the top 5 play in person, except for Djoker in Miami last year.

Djokovic was also the French Open favourite at this time a year ago. By the time the French Open began, Nadal was the favourite.
