Ahaha, I have wings!

    I found out on Wednesday that my scapular wings are actually a bad thing :lol:

    My PT noticed it while I was doing an exercise for my left arm (muscles were weakened after virtually no use for a week due to a sprained wrist) and my scapula just flung out, his immediate reaction being "Whoah!", after which he immediately gave me a few exercises to fix the muscle imbalance.

    Anyone else have 'wings'?

    I usually associate wings with large lat muscles.

    Is that what you're talking about?

    I believe that scapular wings are the result of weak serratus anterior muscles. The serratus are the muscles that make that "claw-like" mark just under and to the outside of your pecs. They're also known as "boxers' muscle", because boxers tend to have very well developed serratus muscles along with very low bodyfat.
    Btw, what exercises did he suggest to get rid of these scapular wings?

    It was basically an overall shoulder strengthening program since had weak rotators as well, with pushup+'s, internal/external band work, lateral raises (45 deg.s) with my back against a door/wall to keep my scapula from winging (I couldn't do this before without them winging), an isolation exercise that was like a dip only using the shoulders only, and one other one that I can't seem to remember off the top of my head for some reason...

    It's been working well, I just have to make sure I never do it before I play tennis otherwise I will kill my shoulder.
